Mahjong Collection
Mahjong Collection: Game Description & Official Rulebook
Part I: Game Description
1.1 Overview and Lore
Welcome to Mahjong Collection, an exquisite, comprehensive digital and tabletop anthology that honors, elevates, and celebrates the rich heritage of traditional tile-matching logic. Set within the tranquil, cherry-blossom-adorned pavilions of the Imperial Tile Academy, players step into the shoes of Master Tile Artisans exploring centuries of tile craft, spatial geometry, and pattern recognition.
Rather than offering a single static layout, Mahjong Collection gathers a vast, curated treasury of global Mahjong traditions and solitaire tile-matching disciplines under one unified system. From classical four-player oriental sets to hundreds of intricate 3D solitaire tile towers—such as the iconic Turtle, Dragon, Spider, and Pagoda formations—players clear intricate, multi-layered arrangements of bone and bamboo tiles by identifying free matching pairs, managing spatial blockades, and planning strategic tile extractions.
Designed for 1 to 4 players, Mahjong Collection provides an extraordinary balance of tranquil mindfulness, cerebral strategy, visual discovery, and competitive speed-matching. Whether enjoyed as a soothing daily meditation, a brain-training tool for sharpening spatial awareness, or a competitive tournament race against time, Mahjong Collection stands as the definitive celebration of eastern tilecraft and logic.

1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design
Mahjong Collection embraces a serene, elegant oriental minimalism aesthetic. Playfield backdrops feature soft silk textures, brushed ink washes, subtle falling petal animations, and soothing ambient soundscapes. To ensure 100% universal accessibility and color-blind clarity, every tile suit features bold, distinct geometric silhouettes, traditional Chinese character calligraphies, and subtle numerical indicators etched cleanly into upper corners.
1.4 Core Objectives
The primary objective in Mahjong Collection is to achieve the highest total Harmony Score by systematically identifying and matching unblocked ("free") pairs of identical tiles, clearing the multi-layered 3D structures from the board, and executing strategic clearing sequences before running out of valid moves.
Points are awarded through:
- Direct Tile Pair Matches: Successfully removing two free matching suit, wind, or dragon tiles.
- Special Class Set Merges: Matching any Season tile with another Season tile, or any Flower tile with another Flower tile.
- Cascade Layer Unlocks: Exposing newly freed tiles underneath cleared upper layers.
- Flawless Clearance Bonuses: Completely clearing a complex multi-tier stack without requesting tile shuffles or hint reveals.
Part II: Gameplay Instructions
2.1 Core Mechanics & Spatial Laws
Mastering Mahjong Collection requires a deep understanding of spatial tile freedom, layer dependency, set matching rules, and tactical layout management.
Law 1: The Rule of Tile Freedom
- A tile is considered "Free" and eligible for selection only if it satisfies two strict spatial conditions:
- No Vertical Obstruction: No portion of another tile is resting directly on top of it (even partially).
- Lateral Freedom: Its left side OR its right side (or both) is completely unblocked by an adjacent tile on the same layer.
- Tiles that are trapped on both the left and right sides, or covered by a higher tile layer, are locked and cannot be selected until obstructing tiles are removed.
Law 2: Standard Matching Rules
- To clear tiles from the board, a player must select two Free tiles that display identical visual artwork and suits (e.g., matching a 4-Bamboo tile with another free 4-Bamboo tile, or a Red Dragon with a Red Dragon).
- Once selected, the matched pair is removed from the playfield and placed into the player's collection console.
Law 3: Special Suit Matching Rules (Flowers & Seasons)
- Flower Tiles (4 Unique): Do not require exact artwork matches! Any free Flower tile can be matched and paired with any other free Flower tile (e.g., Plum pairs with Orchid).
- Season Tiles (4 Unique): Do not require exact artwork matches! Any free Season tile can be paired with any other free Season tile (e.g., Spring pairs with Winter).
Law 4: Spatial Board Capacity and Lockout
- If the playfield contains remaining tiles but zero legal free-matching pairs are available on the board, the game enters Tile Deadlock.
- In standard play, a player must either spend a Shuffle Token to rearrange remaining face-down tiles or accept scenario completion.
2.2 Game Setup
- Select a Tower Layout: Choose a 3D layout schematic from the Layout Codex (e.g., Classic Turtle, Imperial Dragon, or Sky Pagoda).
- Build the Tile Stack: Shuffle the 144 Mahjong tiles face-down. Assemble the multi-layered structure on the Central Bamboo Grid Board according to your chosen layout diagram, ensuring all tiles are aligned precisely on their layer grid tracks.
- Distribute Player Equipment: Give each player an Artisan Console and set score tracking indicators to zero ($0$).
- Initialize Clue Tokens: Grant each player 3 Lantern Clue Tokens and 2 Wind Shuffle Tokens for use during the session.
- Initialize Timer (Optional): If playing in competitive speed mode, place the 60-second Harmony Sand Timer beside the board.
- Determine First Artisan: The player who most recently solved a visual puzzle, held a Mahjong tile, or drank tea takes the first turn. Play proceeds clockwise.
2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play
Succeeding in Mahjong Collection requires forward-thinking spatial planning rather than opportunistic quick matching. Master artisans rely on four primary tactical principles:
Technique 1: Top-Layer & High-Stack Prioritization
Always prioritize matching tiles located on the highest layers of tall stacks (such as the peak of the Turtle layout). Clearing top-layer tiles reveals locked tiles underneath, opening up exponentially more matching possibilities across lower layers!
Technique 2: Equalizing Long Rows
Focus heavily on clearing long horizontal lines or tight vertical columns where tiles are pinned between neighbors. Removing tiles from the ends of long rows frees up multiple trapped tiles simultaneously.
Technique 3: Four-Tile Set Auditing
When all four identical copies of a specific tile are free on the board at the same time, clear all four immediately! Since removing an entire four-tile set leaves zero orphaned copies behind, it poses zero strategic risk to your future board flow.
Technique 4: Preserving Identical Duplicate Options
If a free tile can match with two or three different free partners across the board, do not pick one at random! Analyze which partner's removal will unlock the highest number of covered or trapped tiles.
2.4 Structure of a Play Session
A standard turn in Mahjong Collection progresses through four structured, sequential phases:
- Phase 1: Board Inspection
- The active player scans the multi-tier structure to identify free, unblocked tiles.
- Phase 2: Selection & Pairing
- The player selects one free tile, then selects a second free tile with matching artwork or compatible Flower/Season classifications.
- Phase 3: Clearance & Exposure
- The verified pair is removed from the grid and placed into the player's console tray.
- Any lower-layer tiles or newly unblocked row tiles exposed by the move are officially declared free.
- Phase 4: Turn Handover & Deadlock Check
- Calculate points for the match. Verify if legal moves remain on the board; if valid pairs exist, play passes clockwise to the next player.
2.5 Tile Classification & Scoring Matrix
| Tile Suit / Category | Total Tiles in Deck | Matching Requirement | Base Point Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Suits (Bamboo, Dots, Wan) | 108 Tiles (36 of each) | Exact Numerical & Suit Match | 100 Points per Pair |
| Wind Tiles (N, S, E, W) | 16 Tiles (4 of each) | Exact Wind Direction Match | 150 Points per Pair |
| Dragon Tiles (Red, Green, White) | 12 Tiles (4 of each) | Exact Dragon Type Match | 200 Points per Pair |
| Flower Set (Unique 4) | 4 Tiles (1 of each) | Matches ANY other Flower Tile | 300 Points per Pair |
| Season Set (Unique 4) | 4 Tiles (1 of each) | Matches ANY other Season Tile | 300 Points per Pair |
| Multi-Tier Cascade Bonus | Layer Unlocks | $+50$ Points per Exposed Tile | Added directly to match score |
2.6 Game Modes
2.6.1 Master Solitaire Campaign (1 Player - Zen Logic)
The definitive individual tile-matching experience. The player works through 100 progressive 3D layout challenges, striving to clear entire structures with maximum points and minimal hint usage.
2.6.2 Imperial Duel (2 to 4 Players - Turn-Based Competition)
- Gameplay: Players take turns selecting and removing matching pairs from a shared central layout.
- Strategy: Players balance scoring points against avoiding moves that unlock valuable high-scoring pairs for the next opponent.
- Victory: The player with the highest total points when the layout is fully cleared wins!
2.6.3 Harmony Sprint (1 to 4 Players - Real-Time Speed Race)
- Setup: Identical layout towers are built for each player on separate boards. A 3-minute timer is started.
- Gameplay: Players race simultaneously in real-time, removing pairs as fast as possible.
- Victory: The first player to completely dismantle their tower, or the player with the most cleared tiles when time expires, claims victory!
2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix
At the conclusion of a session, players perform the Final Harmony Audit:
- Total Match Points: Cumulative points accumulated from all cleared tile pairs throughout the game.
- Unused Lantern Bonus: $+200$ Points for each unspent Lantern Clue Token remaining in your inventory.
- Full Tower Clearance Bonus: $+1,000$ Points awarded for completely dismantling a 144-tile structure without experiencing deadlock.
- Deadlock Penalty: Subtract 300 Points if forced to perform a complete board shuffle due to running out of legal moves.
2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions
A game of Mahjong Collection officially concludes upon reaching any of the following resolution triggers:
- Total Tower Clearance (Victory): Every single tile pair has been successfully matched and removed from the central grid board.
- Unresolvable Deadlock: No legal matching pairs remain on the board, and all player Shuffle Tokens have been completely exhausted.
- Timer Expiration: In Harmony Sprint mode, the master countdown clock reaches 0:00.
The player with the highest overall Harmony Score logged on their console is officially crowned the Grand Tile Artisan of the Imperial Academy!
2.9 Rule Clarifications & Academy Etiquette
- Strict Freedom Verification: In physical play, a player must be able to slide a tile laterally out of the grid without knocking over or moving adjacent tiles for it to be considered a legal free tile.
- No Tile Distraction: Non-active players must refrain from pointing out hidden matches, calling out tile coordinates, or touching the central tower frame during another player's turn.
- Shuffle Fairness: When a Shuffle Token is activated, all remaining unblocked and blocked face-down tiles are gathered, re-shuffled thoroughly, and re-laid into the exact remaining positions of the layout schematic.
