Magic Memory
Game Overview & Lore
In the forgotten high realms of Aethelgard, memory is not merely a cognitive function of the mortal mind—it is the raw, ethereal fuel that powers all ancient sorcery. Long before the shattering of the Celestial Spire, grand archmages did not store their spells in fragile parchment or leather-bound tomes. Instead, they woven their spellwork into the invisible tapestry of the Leylines, anchoring arcane secrets within glowing glyphs hidden across sacred stone altars. Over centuries, these altars fell into silent slumber, buried beneath moss, ash, and time. Today, the Leylines ripple once again with unstable energy, awakening the dormant tiles of the Grand Memory Grid.
You play as an Arcane Seeker, a powerful spellcaster summoned to the ruins of the Astral Academy. Your objective is to peer beneath the veils of mystery, match harmonious ancient runes, harness elemental mana, and weave legendary incantations before the unstable magic collapses into chaos. However, the memory grid is treacherous and constantly shifting. Arcane illusions, cursed traps, shadow shifts, and temporal distortions lie hidden among the tiles. To conquer Magic Memory, you must rely on more than mere visual recall; you must employ cunning tactical planning, carefully manage your mana pool, timing-based spell activations, and counter your opponents' maneuvers.
Magic Memory refines the timeless, intuitive mechanic of tile matching and elevates it into a deeply strategic, immersive tabletop experience. Every flipped tile reveals a potential link in a grand spell chain or unearths a volatile trap capable of disrupting your entire turn. As you master the ebb and flow of the grid, you will construct powerful mana combos, unlock ancient relics, and prove yourself as the Supreme Archmage of Aethelgard.
Game Components & Initial Setup
Game Components
To begin your journey into the world of Magic Memory, ensure your game box contains the following physical components:
- 1 Grand Memory Grid Board: A premium, recessed board featuring a 6x6 grid matrix (36 tile slots total).
- 36 Arcane Memory Tiles: High-density acrylic tiles with universal backing and detailed thematic artwork on the face side. These include:
- 12 Elemental Rune Tiles (4 Fire, 4 Water, 4 Earth)
- 8 Artifact & Relic Tiles (4 Sun Amulets, 4 Moon Mirrors)
- 6 Spell Scroll Tiles (2 Chrono-Shift, 2 Telekinesis, 2 Arcane Blast)
- 6 Cursed & Hazard Tiles (3 Void Traps, 3 Mind Fog)
- 4 Wildcard Phoenix Tiles
- 4 Player Dashboards: Custom player boards to track accumulated Mana, Active Spells, Vault Capacity, and Victory Points (Arcane Favor).
- 60 Elemental Mana Crystals: Acrylic gems divided into Fire (Red), Water (Blue), Earth (Green), and Cosmic (Purple).
- 1 Deck of Grimoire Cards (40 Cards): Instant-speed spells and passive enchantments that can be drafted or cast during play.
- 1 Turn Tracker & Mana Market Marker.
- 4 Quick-Reference Rule Sheets.
Initial Setup
- Prepare the Grid: Place the Grand Memory Grid Board in the center of the table within easy reach of all players. Take all 36 Arcane Memory Tiles, shuffle them face down thoroughly, and place one tile face down into each slot on the 6x6 grid. Ensure no player sees the face-down artwork during placement.
- Distribute Player Dashboards: Each player selects a Player Dashboard and receives 3 starting Cosmic Mana Crystals. Place the remaining Mana Crystals into designated supply pools beside the grid to form the Central Reserve.
- Prepare the Grimoire Deck: Shuffle the Grimoire Deck and place it face down beside the grid. Draw the top 3 cards and lay them face up in a row to create the active Spell Market.
- Determine Starting Player: The player who most recently memorized something complex (or highest roll on an elemental die) goes first. Play proceeds clockwise around the table.
Core Game Concepts & Mechanics
The Memory Matrix
The core engine of Magic Memory revolves around flipping face-down tiles on the 6x6 grid to find matching pairs or complete elemental triads. Unlike traditional matching games, revealed tiles do not automatically remain removed from play unless specific conditions are fulfilled. Unmatched tiles are flipped back face-down, requiring players to memorize their locations for future turns or manipulation.
Mana Accumulation and Synergies
When you successfully reveal a matching pair of tiles, you claim those tiles into your personal Vault and extract elemental energy from the Leylines.
- Fire Matches: Award 2 Fire Mana and allow you to incinerate a card from the Spell Market.
- Water Matches: Award 2 Water Mana and grant you a free peek at any face-down tile on the grid without revealing it to opponents.
- Earth Matches: Award 2 Earth Mana and grant 1 Shield Token to protect your Vault from opponent spell effects.
- Phoenix Wildcards: Can pair with any Elemental Rune tile, rewarding 2 Cosmic Mana which can substitute for any element.
The Arcane Vault
Claimed tiles are moved to your Player Dashboard's Vault. Matching pairs in your Vault act as permanent spell components. Collecting complete sets of 3 identical elemental tiles triggers a "Grand Convergence," granting massive Victory Point bonuses and unlocking legendary passive abilities.
Grimoire Cards and Spellcasting
Mana accumulated from matches and card effects is spent to purchase and cast Grimoire Cards from the active Spell Market. Spells allow you to manipulate the grid, force opponents to discard mana, swap tile positions while face-down, or gain additional turns.
Detailed Step-by-Step Gameplay Instructions
Magic Memory is played over a series of rounds until a player reaches 30 Victory Points or the Grand Memory Grid is completely emptied. Each turn consists of three distinct phases executed in sequential order: Phase 1: Arcane Preparation, Phase 2: The Recollection Phase, and Phase 3: The Resolution & Casting Phase.
Phase 1: Arcane Preparation
At the start of your turn, you may spend accumulated Mana to activate passive abilities or buy Grimoire Cards from the Spell Market.
- Draft Spells: Pay the Mana cost listed on a face-up Grimoire Card to add it to your hand.
- Cast Pre-Flip Spells: Play any instant-speed utility spells from your hand (e.g., using Scry to preview a grid tile or using Gale Wind to swap two adjacent face-down tiles).
- Refill Market: If any cards were drafted, immediately replace them with the top card of the Grimoire Deck.
Phase 2: The Recollection Phase
This is the main action phase of your turn where visual recall and tactical choice collide.
- First Tile Flip: Select any single face-down tile on the grid and flip it face-up for all players to clearly see. Announce the name and category of the tile aloud.
- Evaluate Special Tile Effects (Immediate):
- Void Trap: If revealed on your first flip, your turn immediately ends, the Void Trap is flipped back face down, and you lose 1 Mana of your choice.
- Mind Fog: If revealed, all players must close their eyes while the active player swaps the position of Mind Fog with one adjacent face-down tile.
- Second Tile Flip: If no instant turn-ending trap was triggered, select a second face-down tile and flip it face-up.
Phase 3: The Resolution & Casting Phase
Compare the two revealed tiles and apply the outcome based on the match evaluation:
Scenario A: Successful Match
If both revealed tiles share the exact same symbol, element, or if one is a Phoenix Wildcard:
- Claim Tiles: Remove both matching tiles from the grid and place them face-up in your Player Dashboard Vault.
- Gain Mana: Collect the corresponding Mana Crystals from the Central Reserve matching the element of the paired tiles.
- Bonus Action (Arcane Momentum): Because you successfully scored a match, you gain 1 extra bonus tile flip. You may flip one additional face-down tile. If it matches a third tile remaining in your Vault, you achieve a Triad Convergence, scoring double Mana and 3 Victory Points immediately!
Scenario B: Non-Matching Tiles
If the two revealed tiles do not match and neither is a special spell/hazard tile:
- Memorization Pause: Leave both tiles face-up for 5 seconds so all players can commit their positions and symbols to memory.
- Reset Tiles: Flip both tiles back face-down in their exact original grid locations.
- Pass Turn: Your turn ends, and play proceeds clockwise to the next player.
Scenario C: Revealing Action/Spell Tiles
- Arcane Blast Tile: If revealed as your second tile, you may destroy one face-down tile adjacent to it, removing it from play entirely without scoring.
- Chrono-Shift Tile: Allows you to immediately take a full second turn after your current turn resolves.
Game Modes
1. Classic Competitive Mode (2 to 4 Players)
The standard game mode where players compete head-to-head for individual mastery. Players track Victory Points (VP) on their dashboards. Victory points are scored by:
- Claiming Tile Pairs (1 VP per pair)
- Forming Elemental Triads (3 VP per triad)
- Casting High-Tier Grimoire Cards (VP listed on card)
- Unlocking Relic Sets (5 VP for Sun & Moon mirror combo) The game ends immediately when the final tile is cleared from the grid or a player reaches 30 VP. The player with the highest total Victory Points earns the title of Archmage.
2. Solo Mastery Mode (1 Player)
In Solo Mode, you pit your memory and strategy against the Shadow Archmage, an automated opponent driven by a specialty AI deck.
- Setup: Set up the standard 6x6 grid. Draw 3 cards from the AI Deck.
- Gameplay: On the AI turn, flip two cards from the AI deck which specify grid coordinates (e.g., Row 2 Column 4). The AI flips those tiles. If they match, the AI claims them and gains Corruption Points. If they do not match, the AI remembers one tile perfectly and will automatically claim it if its pair is revealed on a subsequent turn.
- Objective: Clear the grid and reach 25 Victory Points before the Shadow Archmage collects 15 Corruption Points or the AI deck runs out.
3. Cooperative Guild Mode (2 to 4 Players)
Form a team of Seeker Guilds working together to restore the Celestial Lattice before the Ancient Void consumes the realm.
- Mechanic: Players share a combined Mana Pool but cannot verbally communicate tile identity during another player's flip phase.
- Void Intrusion: At the end of every round, the top tile of the Void Deck is revealed, placing a corruption marker on a random grid coordinate. Corrupted tiles cannot be flipped until purified using 3 Water Mana.
- Win Condition: Collect all 4 Elemental Triads and defeat the Void Nexus tile within 12 rounds.
Advanced Strategies & Winning Tactics
- The Anchor Method: Do not blindly flip unknown tiles on early turns. Focus on scouting periphery corners to establish anchor points in your memory bank.
- Mana Bank Denial: Pay close attention to your opponents' dashboards. If an opponent is hoarding Fire Mana to purchase a game-ending Dragonfire spell, prioritize matching or clearing Fire tiles to starve their engine.
- Bait and Trap Placement: Utilize Grimoire spells like Illusory Shift to move known Void Traps into grid areas where your opponents are actively searching for matches.
- Triad Timing: Hold off on completing a 2-tile match into a 3-tile Triad until you have active Grimoire cards that double Triad VP rewards.
- Chrono Stacking: Chain Chrono-Shift tiles with draftable extra-turn spells to execute multi-flip turn sequences, clearing up to 25% of the grid in a single dominant combo turn."""
