Unlike traditional static maze games, Pac Maze introduces ever-shifting wall barriers, dynamic floor-tile currents, warp portals, power pellet crafting, and asymmetrical team dynamics. As players move through the maze, collecting data dots and energy orbs, their actions dynamically alter the maze architecture itself—opening shortcuts, dropping laser gates, and changing ghost patrol routes in real time.

1.4 Core Objectives

The primary objective for the Spectral Sentinels (Ghosts) is to coordinate movements, trap the Pac-Runner in dead ends, and exhaust all of the Pac-Runner's remaining lives.

Points are awarded through:

  1. Data Dot Consumption: Collecting standard energy tokens placed along maze corridors.
  2. Spectral Chomp Multipliers: Eating frightened ghosts after consuming a Super Power Orb ($200$, $400$, $800$, $1,600$ points).
  3. Warp Portal Efficiency: Utilizing lateral warp doors to bypass ghost blockades without losing speed.
  4. Stage Sweep Bonuses: Completely clearing a maze layout with zero life losses.

Part II: Gameplay Instructions


2.1 Core Mechanics & Spatial Movement Laws

Mastering Pac Maze requires a sharp understanding of directional momentum, ghost AI targeting vectors, grid collision rules, and power orb timing.


Law 1: The Continuous Momentum Rule

  • The Pac-Runner moves at a default speed of 3 Grid Spaces per turn (or movement phase).
  • Movement must follow open grid pathways. The Pac-Runner cannot pass through solid walls, laser barriers, or locked warp doors without a specific power-up.
  • The Pac-Runner cannot stop voluntarily in a corridor space; movement must use the full allocated movement points unless halted by a wall junction or an active ghost collision.

Law 2: Ghost Movement & Behavioral Targeting

  • Ghosts move at a default speed of 2 Grid Spaces per turn, but increase to 3 Grid Spaces when entering open main corridors.
  • Each ghost follows a strict movement rule depending on its current operational state:
    • Chase Mode: Ghosts calculate paths toward their individual targeting vectors (direct, ambush, flank, or corner patrol).
    • Scatter Mode: Ghosts disengage active pursuit and head toward their designated home corners for 2 turns.
    • Frightened Mode: When a Super Power Orb is consumed, ghosts instantly turn dark blue, reverse direction, and move away from the Pac-Runner at a reduced speed of 1 Grid Space per turn.

Law 3: Warp Portal Transport Mechanics

  • When a character enters a designated Warp Portal tile on the left or right edge of the grid, they instantly emerge from the corresponding Warp Portal tile on the opposite edge of the maze.
  • Warp movement consumes exactly 1 movement point. Ghosts moving through warp portals experience a $50\%$ speed drop on the following turn, giving the Pac-Runner a critical getaway window.

Law 4: The Inversion Principle (Power Pellet Mechanics)

  • When the Pac-Runner enters a tile containing a Super Power Orb, the orb is consumed instantly, and the global game state shifts to Inverted Hunter Mode for 3 complete turns.
  • During Inverted Hunter Mode, the Pac-Runner can collide with frightened dark blue ghosts to "chomp" them, removing them from the board, earning escalating bonus points, and sending their eyes back to the central Ghost House to regenerate.

2.2 Game Setup

  1. Construct the Circuit Board: Select a layout blueprint from the Circuit Codex (e.g., Classic Arcade, Neon Matrix, or Portal Panic) and place wall tiles onto the Central Neon Base.
  2. Populate Data Dots: Fill all marked corridor intersections with Energy Data Dots, placing 4 Super Power Orbs in the four outer corner quadrants.
  3. Position the Units: Place the Pac-Runner on the designated bottom-center start tile. Place all 4 Spectral Sentinel figures inside the central Ghost House.
  4. Distribute Consoles: Provide the Pac-Runner player with the Control Console tray and 3 Life Tokens. If playing with multiple players, assign specific ghosts to rival players or prepare the Ghost AI Deck for automated play.
  5. Initialize Score Ledgers: Set all score displays to zero ($0$) and set the game mode switch (Classic, Speed Duel, or Co-op).
  6. Begin the Run: The Pac-Runner takes the first movement turn, followed by the Ghost Movement Phase.

2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play

Succeeding in Pac Maze requires foresight, spatial calculation, and route planning rather than frantic movement. Master players rely on four primary tactical principles:


Technique 1: Sector Clearance Planning

Do not zig-zag across the maze at random! Divide the board mentally into four quadrants. Clear one entire quadrant fully before moving to the next, reducing the need to backtrack through dangerous empty corridors later.


Technique 2: Power Orb Stagging

Avoid consuming Super Power Orbs when ghosts are far away across the map. Bait multiple ghosts into chasing you closely into a corner, then consume the Power Orb to chain four rapid ghost chomps in a single turn for maximum point multipliers ($3,000+$ total points)!


Technique 3: Cornering Vector Manipulation

Exploit ghost targeting rules! Since Pinky targets spaces ahead of your facing direction, changing your direction dial right before your move phase forces Pinky to alter her pursuit trajectory, opening up escape paths through tight intersections.


Technique 4: Warp Tunnel Bottlenecking

When trapped between two pursuing ghosts, dive into the nearest lateral Warp Portal. Because ghosts lose movement speed when traversing warp tunnels, you instantly gain a multi-tile gap upon emerging on the opposite side of the board.


2.4 Structure of a Play Session

A standard round in Pac Maze progresses through four structured, sequential phases:

  1. Phase 1: Pac-Runner Movement Phase
    • The Pac-Runner player sets their direction dial and advances up to 3 grid spaces along open paths.
    • Collect any Energy Data Dots or Power Orbs on traversed tiles, updating the score ledger immediately.
  2. Phase 2: Power-Up Duration Check
    • If Inverted Hunter Mode is active, decrement the global countdown tracker by 1 notch. If the tracker hits zero, ghosts return to standard chase mode.
  3. Phase 3: Ghost Movement Phase
    • Each ghost advances according to its AI behavior rules or the tactical choices of ghost-controlling players.
    • Ghosts emerging from the central house move according to active wave release timers.
  4. Phase 4: Collision Audit & Turn Reset
    • Check for space overlaps between Pac-Runner and Ghost figures.
    • Standard Mode Contact: Pac-Runner loses 1 Life Token; board resets for the next attempt.

1 player controls the Pac-Runner, while up to 4 other players each command a single ghost, coordinating physical blockades and trapping maneuvers in real time to defeat the runner.

2.6.2 Solo Circuit Survival (1 Player - Puzzle Strategy)

A single player controls the Pac-Runner against an automated Ghost AI deck. The player attempts to clear 5 increasingly complex maze layouts in a row while managing a single shared pool of 3 lives.

2.6.3 Maze Sprint (1 to 4 Players - Speed Challenge)

  • Setup: A single maze layout is populated with dots. The 45-second sand timer is turned over.
  • Gameplay: Players take turns trying to collect as many dots and power orb combos as possible within a single timer rotation.
  • Victory: The player with the highest single-turn score tally wins!

2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix

At the conclusion of a session, players calculate their total score in the Master Circuit Ledger:

  • Total Collection Points: Combined score from all Data Dots, Power Orbs, and eaten ghosts.
  • Remaining Life Bonus: $+500$ Points for every unused Life Token left in your console tray at game completion.
  • Perfect Sweep Bonus: $+2,000$ Points for clearing a maze without losing a single life.
  • Ghost Defeat Penalty: If all Life Tokens are lost, the Pac-Runner's run terminates immediately, and no stage clear bonuses are awarded.

2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions

A game of Pac Maze officially concludes upon reaching any of the following resolution triggers:

  1. Circuit Cleared (Runner Victory): The Pac-Runner successfully consumes every single Energy Data Dot and Super Power Orb on the maze board.
  2. System Lockout (Ghost Victory): The Pac-Runner loses their final Life Token through a ghost collision in standard mode.
  3. Timer Expiration: In Speed Sprint mode, the master countdown clock reaches 0:00.

The player with the highest overall score recorded on their dashboard is crowned the Master Grid Runner of the Cyber-Core!


2.9 Rule Clarifications & Grid Etiquette

  • Cornering Priority: When Pac-Runner and a Ghost move toward the exact same grid tile simultaneously during a combined phase, contact is triggered instantly.
  • Strict Directional Dialing: The Pac-Runner player must lock in their movement direction on the physical dial before counting out grid spaces for their move.
  • No Diagonal Traversal: Movement across all grid tiles is strictly orthogonal (up, down, left, right). Diagonal steps are illegal at all times.
