Steps Solitaire: Game Description & Official Rulebook

Part I: Game Description

1.1 Overview and Lore

Welcome to Steps Solitaire, an elegant, highly strategic variation of classic single-player patience games that merges traditional card mechanics with progressive spatial staircase building, tactical cascade management, and multi-tiered foundation assembly. Set within the grand marble galleries of the Ascension Citadel, players take on the role of Royal Architectural Masters tasked with constructing the legendary "Steps of Enlightenment." Your mission: manipulate a multi-tiered staircase tableau, navigate stepping-stone card columns, free buried suit pathways, and build four complete foundation pillars from Ace to King in perfect harmonic ascension.

Unlike standard Solitaire variants where cards move across uniform tableau columns, Steps Solitaire features a uniquely structured, step-increasing layout where each column's depth increases sequentially from left to right, creating a distinct visual and structural staircase pattern. Cards must be moved along precise ascending and descending movement rules, requiring players to plan multiple steps ahead, balance short-term card clearance with long-term structural mobility, and make tactical use of temporary step-landing buffers.

Designed primarily as a deep solo strategy experience—with additional rules provided for competitive multi-deck races and head-to-head architectural duels—Steps Solitaire delivers a captivating balance of spatial logic, sequential calculation, risk management, and satisfying puzzle resolution. Whether played as a meditative daily exercise to hone foresight or an intense competitive speed trial, Steps Solitaire offers a timeless celebration of card-sorting mastery.

1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design

Steps Solitaire adopts a high-contrast classic architectural art-deco visual style. The playfield displays deep forest green or royal navy felt framed by gilded gold borders, with large-face card typography that ensures maximum legibility. To guarantee 100% universal accessibility and complete color-blind compatibility, every suit suit symbol incorporates a distinct geometric silhouette alongside standard red/black coloring (Spades = Pointed Arch, Hearts = Curved Shield, Clubs = Trefoil Crest, Diamonds = Rhombus Crystal).

1.4 Core Objectives

The primary objective in Steps Solitaire is to achieve complete Architectural Ascension by transferring all 52 cards from the Step-Tableau, Stock Deck, and Waste Pile onto the four Foundation Pillars, building each suit up in ascending numerical order from Ace to King.

Points and performance metrics are evaluated through:

  1. Foundation Placements: Successfully transferring cards from the tableau or stock to their matching suit foundations.
  2. Tableau Step Clearances: Completely emptying a step-tableau column to create flexible open landing zones.
  3. Step-Ladder Sequences: Building long, unbroken alternating-color descending runs within the tableau.
  4. Flawless Clearance Bonuses: Completing the entire layout without needing to re-deal or recycle the stock deck.

Part II: Gameplay Instructions

2.1 Core Mechanics & Movement Laws

Mastering Steps Solitaire requires strict adherence to spatial movement rules, foundation suit prioritization, and column manipulation laws.

Law 1: The Staircase Tableau Structure

  • The Tableau consists of 7 stepped columns numbered 1 through 7 from left to right.
  • Column 1 starts with 1 card; Column 2 with 2 cards; Column 3 with 3 cards; continuing sequentially up to Column 7, which starts with 7 cards—forming the iconic 28-card "Step" formation.
  • Only the bottom-most, fully exposed card of each column starts face-up; all cards buried underneath remain face-down until freed.

Law 2: Tableau Movement & Alternate-Color Descent

  • Cards can be moved across tableau columns in descending numerical order with alternating colors (e.g., a red 7 can only be placed onto a black 8; a black Jack can only be placed onto a red Queen).
  • Group Step Movement: You may move a valid, unbroken sequence of face-up cards as a single unit onto another column, provided the top card of the moving sequence forms a valid rank-and-color match with the destination card.

Law 3: Empty Step Column Rules

  • When a tableau column is completely cleared of cards, it creates an Empty Step.
  • The Sovereign Step Rule: Only a King (or an unbroken descending sequence starting with a King) can be moved into an Empty Step column space!

Law 4: Foundation Pillar Construction

  • The 4 Foundation Pillars are built strictly in ascending numerical order of matching suit, starting from Ace and ending with King ($\text{Ace} \rightarrow 2 \rightarrow 3 \rightarrow \dots \rightarrow \text{Jack} \rightarrow \text{Queen} \rightarrow \text{King}$).
  • Once an Ace is exposed anywhere on the tableau or waste pile, it should be moved immediately to an open Foundation space to establish that suit's pillar.
  • Cards placed in the Foundations are generally locked, though advanced rules allow retrieving a card back to the tableau if needed to unlock a critical deadlock.

Law 5: The Step-Landing Buffer Slots (Reserves)

  • At the top left of the board reside 4 Step-Landing Buffer Slots.
  • Players may move any single exposed card from the tableau or waste pile into an open Buffer Slot to temporarily hold it, freeing up trapped cards underneath.
  • Each Buffer Slot can hold only 1 card at a time. Cards in the buffers can be played back to tableau columns or foundation pillars at any valid time.

2.2 Game Setup

  1. Unroll the Ascension Playmat: Place the playmat flat on a firm surface, ensuring all foundation, tableau, and buffer zones are visible.
  2. Shuffle the Deck: Thoroughly shuffle the 52-card Master Deck.
  3. Deal the Step-Tableau: Deal cards face-down into 7 columns from left to right:
    • Column 1: 1 card (face up)
    • Column 2: 1 card face down, 1 card face up
    • Column 3: 2 cards face down, 1 card face up
    • Column 4: 3 cards face down, 1 card face up
    • Column 5: 4 cards face down, 1 card face up
    • Column 6: 5 cards face down, 1 card face up
    • Column 7: 6 cards face down, 1 card face up
  4. Form the Stock Deck: Place the remaining 24 un-dealt cards face-down in the Stock Deck space at the bottom left.
  5. Initialize Foundations & Buffers: Ensure all 4 Foundation Pillars and 4 Step-Landing Buffer Slots are empty.
  6. Begin the Run: The session begins with the first tableau inspection and move execution.

2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play

Succeeding in Steps Solitaire relies on foresight, reserve management, and calculated column opening rather than making random valid moves. Master architects rely on four primary tactical principles:

Technique 1: Deep-Step Uncovering Priority

Always prioritize making moves that expose face-down cards in the deepest tableau columns (Columns 6 and 7)! Column 7 has 6 buried cards; uncovering these early is critical to revealing hidden Aces and crucial low-rank suit connectors.

Technique 2: Buffer Slot Conservation

Do not fill your 4 Step-Landing Buffer Slots impulsively! Treat buffer slots as precious emergency reserves. Filling all four buffers early locks your board state, making complex multi-card tableau maneuvers impossible.

Technique 3: Tactical King Holding

Do not clear a tableau column to make an empty space unless you already have a King available to occupy it! An empty column space that sits vacant provides no value, whereas moving a King into it opens up an entire new descending sequence channel.

Technique 4: Stock Deck Pacing

Cycle through the Stock Deck thoughtfully! Scan the waste pile for cards that immediately advance foundation pillars or unlock multi-card tableau transfers before drawing further cards.

2.4 Structure of a Play Session

A standard turn sequence in Steps Solitaire progresses through four structured, sequential phases:

  1. Phase 1: Tableau Analysis & Scan
    • Inspect all face-up tableau cards, available waste pile cards, and buffer slots for valid matches.
  2. Phase 2: Move Execution
    • Execute valid card transfers: Tableau-to-Tableau, Tableau-to-Foundation, Waste-to-Tableau, or Tableau-to-Buffer.
    • If a face-down card in a tableau column becomes exposed, flip it face-up immediately.
  3. Phase 3: Stock Draw (When No Moves Remain)
    • Draw cards from the Stock Deck to the Waste Pile (either 1-card draw or 3-card draw based on chosen difficulty).
  4. Phase 4: Foundation Audit & State Check
    • Transfer any eligible ascending suit cards to the Foundation Pillars.
    • Verify if further legal moves exist; continue until all cards are built onto foundations or no valid moves remain.

2.5 Scoring Matrix & Action Values

Action / Move Type Destination Zone Base Point Award Strategic Value / Impact
Waste Card to Tableau Step-Tableau Column +5 Points Integrates drawn stock into active playing grid
Waste/Tableau to Foundation Foundation Pillar +10 Points Direct progress toward ultimate victory objective
Flip Face-Down Card Same Tableau Column +5 Points Unlocks buried cards and expands options
Tableau to Buffer Slot Landing Buffer Slot -2 Points Temporary tactical placement; frees lower cards
Buffer Slot to Tableau/Foundation Tableau or Foundation +5 Points Restores buffer capacity and resolves sequence
Recycle Stock Deck Stock Channel -20 Points Re-shuffles waste pile back into stock deck

2.6 Game Modes

2.6.1 Classic Ascension (1 Player - Solo Patience)

The traditional single-player experience. A single player plays through the standard stepped layout, aiming for a complete 52-card foundation build with maximum efficiency points.

2.6.2 Architect's Sprint (1 to 4 Players - Speed Race)

  • Setup: Each player receives their own standard 52-card deck and playmat. A 5-minute timer is set.
  • Gameplay: Players race simultaneously in real-time to build as many cards onto their Foundation Pillars as possible before time runs out.
  • Victory: The player with the highest total Foundation card count when time expires wins!

2.6.3 Head-to-Head Duel (2 Players - Competitive Strategy)

Players share a single central board with two combined decks, competing turn-by-turn to place cards onto shared Foundation Pillars, scoring points for every placement and blocking opponent sequence paths.

2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix

At the conclusion of a session, players calculate their total score on the Architect Ledger:

  • Foundation Completion Score: 10 Points per card on Foundations (Max 520 Points for full clear).
  • Time Bonus (Fast Clear): +2 Points for every 10 seconds remaining on the clock under standard time trials.
  • Flawless No-Buffer Clear: +100 Bonus Points awarded if the game was won without using a single Buffer Slot.
  • Stock Recycle Penalty: Subtract 20 Points for every stock deck reset utilized during the game.

2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions

A game of Steps Solitaire officially concludes upon reaching any of the following resolution triggers:

  1. Grand Ascension (Victory): All 52 cards are successfully arranged in proper ascending suit order on the four Foundation Pillars.
  2. Stagnation Lockout (Defeat): No legal moves remain across the tableau, stock deck, waste pile, and buffer slots, and stock recycles are exhausted.

The player who completes the ascension or logs the highest overall Architect Score is officially crowned the Master Architect of the Ascension Citadel!

2.9 Rule Clarifications & Citadel Etiquette

  • Single Hand Operation: Cards must be picked up and transferred one at a time or in a single contiguous sequence using one hand.
  • Strict Card Flip Rule: A buried face-down card in the tableau cannot be flipped face-up until the card directly covering it has been completely moved to another valid space.
  • Foundation Permanence: In standard tournament play, once a card is moved onto a Foundation Pillar and a subsequent move is made, that card cannot be pulled back down to the tableau.
