Players step into the role of Master Cyber-Architects, charged with designing, powering, and automating state-of-the-art synthetic manufacturing facilities that produce hyper-charged energy cells, glowing luminescent circuits, and rare cybernetic hardware.
In Neon Factory, 1 to 4 players build and operate personal assembly lines composed of vibrant, interlocking neon machinery cards and glowing light-conduit tiles. Unlike traditional passive engine-builders, Neon Factory features a dynamic, real-time energy flow system: power is routed through your factory via colorful beams of electricity (represented by red, blue, green, and ultraviolet energy cubes). To maximize output, you must construct continuous, unbroken circuits that deliver precisely balanced voltage to high-yield processing nodes without overloading your power grids or causing catastrophic industrial meltdowns.

Part II: Gameplay Instructions
2.1 Core Mechanics & Energy Flow Rules
Operating your industrial floor requires mastering strict electrical routing and thermal management principles.
Rule 1: Assembly Line Placement
- Machines must be built onto open grid spaces on your $4 \times 4$ Factory Floor Slate.
- Each machine card displays input ports on its left/top edges and output ports on its right/bottom edges.
- Machines must align so that output energy flow matches adjacent machine inputs or connects via Conduit Tiles.
Rule 2: Color-Coded Energy Conversions
- Energy flows sequentially from left to right along your active assembly line.
- Raw Red Energy generated by basic Plasma Coils must pass through Prism Converters to be transformed into Stabilized Blue Energy or Bio-Luminescent Green Energy.
- Higher-tier Zenith Assemblers accept only purified Blue, Green, or Ultraviolet energy to produce finished contract goods.
Rule 3: Thermal Accumulation and Heat Sinks
- Running machines at maximum capacity generates residual Heat Tokens.
- Every Red or Ultraviolet energy cube processed generates 1 Heat Token on that machine card.
- Heat must be channeled away into designated Heat Sink Slots on your slate. If a machine accumulates 3 Heat Tokens without a heat sink, it suffers an Overload Meltdown, destroying the card and turning the grid slot into a burnt hazard zone!
2.2 Game Setup
- Deploy the Central Grid: Place the City Power Grid Board in the middle of the play area within equal reach of all players.
- Stock the Supply Vault: Separate the Energy Cubes by color into designated supply trays alongside Heat Sink Tokens and Conduit Tiles.
- Establish the Machine Market: Shuffle the Neon Machine Deck and reveal 5 face-up cards to form the active Tech Market.
- Prepare Contracts: Reveal 3 face-up Corporate Contract Cards along the top of the central board.
- Initialize Player Slates:
- Each player receives a $4 \times 4$ Factory Floor Slate and 2 Starter Power Generators.
- Place 1 Starter Generator on slot (1,1) and the second on slot (4,1).
- Distribute 3 starting Stabilized Blue Energy Cubes to each player's personal reserve.
- Determine the Chief Engineer: The player who last replaced a lightbulb or turned on a neon sign goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.
2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play
Building a victorious factory requires balancing raw power output with clean thermal regulation. Master players utilize four primary architectural strategies:
Technique 1: Closed-Loop Automation
Design processing loops where the energy output of Machine A powers Machine B, whose secondary bypass output feeds back into Machine A's trigger node. Setting up a closed loop allows a single starting spark to trigger multiple processing cycles automatically without expending extra turn actions!
Technique 2: Thermal Channelling
Position high-heat generators directly adjacent to water-chilled Conduit Tiles. Channelling heat into cooling conduits immediately dissipates thermal tokens before they reach critical levels, preventing costly meltdowns during heavy production turns.
Technique 3: Market Cornering
Keep a close watch on the open Corporate Contracts. If a rival player is building a green-energy focused factory floor, buy out the key Prism Converters from the Tech Market to starve their assembly line of necessary conversion modules.
Technique 4: Overclocking Execution
Save your rare Ultraviolet Cubes for late-game turns. Inserting an Ultraviolet Cube into a Zenith Assembler doubles its point output for that turn, allowing you to fulfill massive end-game contracts in a single explosive move!
2.4 Structure of a Play Session
A complete session of Neon Factory is played over a series of rounds, each divided into four distinct phases executed sequentially:
- Phase 1: Procurement Phase (Drafting)
- In turn order, each player may purchase up to 2 Machine Cards or Conduit Tiles from the Tech Market by paying their listed energy cost.
- Replenish empty market slots immediately from the draw deck.
- Phase 2: Construction & Wiring Phase (Placement)
- Place newly purchased machines onto your $4 \times 4$ slate.
- Lay down Conduit Tiles to bridge gaps between misaligned input and output ports.
- Install Heat Sinks or relocate existing modular connections.
- Phase 3: Production Phase (Execution)
- Activate your Power Generators to produce raw energy cubes.
- Push energy through your conduits, converting colors and powering processing nodes.
- Collect finished products and assign them to active Corporate Contracts.
- Assign all generated Heat Tokens to Heat Sinks; resolve any uncontained meltdowns!
- Phase 4: Maintenance & Refresh Phase (Reset)

- Setup: You play against an automated corrupt AI system ("SYSTEM OVERRIDE") that takes top market cards and drains city contracts every turn.
- Objective: Out-score the AI's ramping automated quota before the 8th round ends without suffering more than 1 factory meltdown.
2.6.3 Cyber-Grid Team Duel (4 Players - 2 vs 2)
Partners sit opposite each other and maintain separate factory slates, but share a central Power Conduit Bridge. Teammates can send surplus energy cubes across the bridge to fuel each other's processing assemblies!
2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix
At the end of the final round, players tally their scores on the central City Power Grid Board using the following formula:
- Fulfill Corporate Contracts: Full point value listed on each claimed card (typically 15 to 50 points).
- Installed Tech Infrastructure: 5 Points per operational machine on your Factory Floor Slate.
- Energy Reserves: 1 Point per unspent Blue or Green Cube; 3 Points per unspent Ultraviolet Cube.
- Clean Energy Bonus: +20 Points if your factory floor suffered zero meltdowns during the entire match.
- System Meltdown Penalty: -15 Points for every burnt, ruined grid slot remaining on your slate.
2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions
A game of Neon Factory concludes at the end of the round in which any of the following conditions is met:
- Contract Completion: A player successfully claims their 5th Corporate Contract Card.
- Grid Saturation: A player successfully fills all 16 slots on their $4 \times 4$ Factory Floor Slate with operational machinery.
- Deck Depletion: The central Neon Machine Deck runs out of cards during the Procurement Phase.
The player with the highest total Corporate Net Worth (CNW) score is declared the Master Cyber-Architect of The Glow!
Tie-Breakers
If two or more players tie for total points, resolve the tie in the following order:
- The player who fulfilled the single highest-value individual Corporate Contract.
- The player with the fewest total Heat Tokens remaining on their slate at game end.
- The player with the most unspent Ultraviolet Cubes in their reserve.
2.9 Rule Clarifications & Factory Etiquette
- Fixed Movement Rules: Energy cubes must move strictly forward through your production line; energy can never move backward along a conduit unless flowing through a specialized Feedback Loop Card.
- Simultaneous Operations: During the Construction Phase, players may arrange their slates simultaneously to speed up play. However, Phase 3 (Production) must be executed in strict turn order so all players can verify heat buildup and contract fulfillments.
- Scrapping Machinery: A player may destroy an existing machine on their slate to clear space for a new one during the Construction Phase. However, scrapping a machine costs 2 Stabilized Blue Cubes to cover industrial cleanup fees!
