Mahjong Merge
Mahjong Merge: Game Description & Official Rulebook
Part I: Game Description
1.1 Overview and Lore
Welcome to Mahjong Merge, a captivating, highly strategic tabletop and digital puzzle experience that harmoniously fuses the rich visual heritage and tile-matching elegance of traditional Mahjong with the dynamic evolution mechanics of modern numerical and tier-based merge games. Set within the tranquil, lantern-lit atmosphere of the Jade Emperor’s Pavilion, players take on the role of Master Tile Artisans competing to combine, elevate, and refine classic Mahjong suits across an evolving game board.
In Mahjong Merge, 1 to 4 players interact with a multi-layered playing grid populated by iconic Mahjong tiles depicting Bamboo, Characters, Circles, Winds, and Dragons. Unlike classic solitaire Mahjong games where players simply match pairs of unblocked tiles to remove them from the board, Mahjong Merge challenges players to push, slide, and align identical matching tiles so that they collapse inward and merge! When two or more matching tiles of the same suit and rank collide, they synthesize into a single higher-tier tile of the next numerical rank or honor level—evolving from humble single-value tiles into majestic Golden Dragon tiles and radiant Imperial Jewels.
Combining long-term spatial foresight, chain-reaction setup, tactical board management, and resource conservation, Mahjong Merge offers a deeply satisfying brain-teaser for casual players and seasoned puzzle logicians alike. Will you balance your board space to engineer massive multi-tier cascade merges, or will a crowded grid seal off your options and bring your artistic journey to a sudden halt?

1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design
Mahjong Merge features a luxurious visual design inspired by classical East Asian artistry, polished jade, lacquered wood, and traditional calligraphy. The game board is crafted with smooth, dark bamboo finishes framed by glowing brass borders along each grid cell. Tiles are heavy, ivory-colored acrylic pieces with deeply engraved, hand-painted Chinese calligraphy and traditional icons. To ensure complete accessibility for color-blind and visually impaired players, every tile suit and honor tier features distinct numeric indices, geometric icon stamps, and embossed border patterns alongside traditional artistic motifs.
1.4 Core Objectives
The primary objective in Mahjong Merge is to achieve the highest possible Harmony Score (HS) by strategically sliding, combining, and evolving Mahjong tiles on the grid board before running out of open space. Points are earned through:
- Direct Merges: Fusing two or more identical tiles into a single higher-tier tile.
- Cascade Chains: Triggering sequential secondary and tertiary merges as newly evolved tiles drop into adjacent spaces.
- Honor Evolutions: Evolving standard suited tiles into rare Wind, Dragon, and Imperial Zenith tiles.
- Grid Sweeps: Completely clearing rows, columns, or suit sets through high-tier Dragon explosions.
Part II: Gameplay Instructions
2.1 Core Mechanics & Merge Rules
Understanding the progression hierarchy and spatial sliding mechanics is essential to mastering Mahjong Merge.
Rule 1: The Tile Progression Hierarchy
Tiles merge strictly according to an established numerical and thematic evolution tree:
- Suited Progression (Tiers 1–9): Matching two identical tiles of the same suit and number merges them into the next numerical rank of that suit (e.g., two 3-Bamboo tiles merge into one 4-Bamboo tile).
- Honor Progression (Tiers 10–12): Fusing two 9-Suited tiles of any matching suit evolves them into a Wind Tile. Fusing two matching Wind Tiles evolves them into a Dragon Tile (Red, Green, or White).
- Zenith Synthesis (Tier 13): Fusing two matching Dragon Tiles creates the ultimate Golden Dragon Imperial Tile, which detonates in a burst of light, clearing all adjacent neighboring cells from the board!
Rule 2: Grid Movement and Collisions
On your turn, you place an incoming tile onto an open grid cell or slide an existing tile across the board:
- Tiles slide orthogonally (Up, Down, Left, Right) across empty grid cells until they hit a wall or another tile.
- Collision Rule: If a sliding tile collides with an identical tile (same suit and rank), they instantly fuse into the destination cell, freeing up the originating cell!
- If a sliding tile collides with a non-matching tile or a higher-tier tile, it stops in the adjacent empty cell.
Rule 3: Multi-Tile Mass Merges
If three or four identical tiles collide simultaneously during a single slide action or board push:
- Three matching tiles merge across two progression ranks (e.g., three 2-Circles merge directly into one 4-Circle).
- Four matching tiles trigger a Quad Fusion, advancing three progression ranks and awarding double base points!
2.2 Game Setup
- Prepare the Bamboo Board: Lay the central $5 \times 5$ grid board flat in the middle of the play area within equal reach of all players. Ensure all 25 grid cells are completely clear.
- Initialize the Tile Reserve: Place all 120 acrylic tiles into the velvet tile draw bag and mix them thoroughly.
- Fill the Staging Tray: Draw 3 random tiles from the bag and place them face-up in the Tile Staging Tray.
- Distribute Player Equipment:
- Each player takes a Player Reference Console and score marker.
- Distribute 3 Jade Catalyst Tokens to each player for emergency tactical maneuvers.
- Place score markers on space 0 of the perimeter track.
- Determine Lead Artisan: The player who most recently played a tile game, solved a puzzle, or visited a garden goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.
2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play
Winning at Mahjong Merge requires balancing immediate space-clearing merges with long-term structural organization. Below are the primary step-by-step techniques used by master artisans:
Technique 1: Edge and Corner Anchoring
Always keep your highest-tier tiles (such as 8s, 9s, Winds, and Dragons) anchored in the corners or along the outer edges of the grid. Leaving high-tier tiles in the center of the board blocks movement pathways and prevents lower-tier 1s and 2s from sliding toward each other.
Technique 2: Setting Up Cascade Corridors
Arrange lower-tier tiles in sequential numerical order along a continuous line or "snake" path (e.g., 1-Bamboo, 2-Bamboo, 3-Bamboo, 4-Bamboo sitting in adjacent cells). When you introduce a matching 1-Bamboo into the start of the line, it merges into a 2, which instantly merges into the neighboring 2, triggering a multi-stage Cascade Chain Reaction that sweeps clean across the board!
Technique 3: Managing the Staging Queue
Always examine all 3 tiles available in the Staging Tray before making a move. Plan the placement sequence of incoming tiles to ensure that placing Tile A does not block the ideal sliding path for Tile B on your next turn.
Technique 4: Tactical Use of Catalyst Tokens
Jade Catalyst Tokens allow you to perform special abilities, such as swapping two adjacent tiles on the board or removing an isolated, blocking low-tier tile. Save these precious tokens for emergency situations when the board is over 80% full and a deadlocking placement threatens to end your run.
2.4 Structure of a Play Session
A complete match of Mahjong Merge progresses through a continuous sequence of player turns consisting of four operational phases:
- Phase 1: Inspection & Staging Selection
- Examine the 3 active tiles in the face-up Staging Tray. Select 1 tile to play on your current turn.
- Phase 2: Tile Placement & Sliding (Action Phase)
- Place the selected tile onto any empty cell on the $5 \times 5$ board.
- Slide the placed tile (or shift an entire row/column in shift-mode variants) toward matching target tiles to initiate collisions.
- Optional: Spend 1 Jade Catalyst Token to perform a tactical tile swap or cell purge.
- Phase 3: Merge, Cascade & Score Calculation
- Resolve all tile collisions, fusing matching pairs into higher-tier tiles.
- Process any secondary or tertiary cascade merges created as neighboring tiles adjust into cleared spaces.
- Log all base placement points, merge bonuses, and cascade multipliers on the perimeter track.
- Phase 4: Staging Refill & Hand-Off
- Draw 1 new tile from the velvet bag to refill the empty slot in the Staging Tray.
- Pass the turn clockwise to the next player.
2.5 Difficulty Levels & Board Variations
| Game Mode | Board Matrix | Special Rules / Constraints | Key Skill Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garden Beginner | $5 \times 5$ Grid | Standard Merges, Single Suit Focus | Spatial Planning, Basic Alignment |
| Imperial Standard | $5 \times 5$ Grid | All Suits + Winds & Dragons | Long-Term Stacking, Cascade Chains |
| Dragon Labyrinth | $6 \times 6$ Grid with 4 Blocked Obstacle Cells | Reduced open corridors, tight sliding | Precision Navigation, Catalyst Management |
| Speed Blitz Duel | $5 \times 5$ Grid | 30-Second Turn Limit per player | Rapid Visual Scanning, Quick Reflexes |
2.6 Game Modes
2.6.1 Standard Competitive Match (2 to 4 Players)
The core tabletop experience. Players take turns placing and merging tiles on a shared $5 \times 5$ board, competing to build high-value Honor Tiles, trigger multi-stage cascades, and claim suit set bonuses before the board locks out.
2.6.2 Cooperative Harmony Expedition (2 to 4 Players)
A fully collaborative team mode:
- Goal: Work together on a shared board to evolve and collect a specific combination of Imperial Zenith Tiles (e.g., synthesize 3 Golden Dragons) within 40 total team turns.
- Players must communicate and coordinate tile placements to set up massive multi-stage cascades for one another without crowding the shared grid.
2.6.3 Solitaire Tile Master (1 Player - Solo Mode)
Test your individual spatial strategy against THE GRID LOCK:
- Start with an empty board and play continuously through a shuffled 60-tile deck.
- Your goal is to reach a target score of 5,000 Harmony Points while keeping the board open and operational.
2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix
In all competitive and solo game modes, final scores are calculated based on cumulative performance logged on the perimeter track:
- Standard Suited Merge (Tiers 1–9): 100 Points $\times$ New Tier Level (e.g., merging into a Tier 5 tile = 500 Points).
- Wind Honor Merge: 1,000 Points.
- Dragon Honor Merge: 2,500 Points.
- Imperial Golden Dragon Synthesis: 5,000 Bonus Points!
- Cascade Multiplier: 2nd Cascade = $2\times$ Points; 3rd Cascade = $3\times$ Points; 4th Cascade = $5\times$ Points!
- Unused Catalyst Tokens: +200 Bonus Points for each remaining Jade Catalyst Token at game end.
2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions
A match of Mahjong Merge concludes immediately when either of the following conditions occurs:
- Grid Lockout: The game board becomes completely filled with 25 tiles, and no legal merges or sliding moves can be performed by the active player.
- Deck Depletion: The central tile bag is completely empty, and all remaining tiles in the Staging Tray have been played onto the board.
The player with the highest total score on the Harmony Track is declared the Master Tile Artisan!
Tie-Breakers
If two or more players tie for total points, resolve the tie using the following criteria:
- The player who achieved the highest single Cascade Chain Reaction.
- The player who synthesized the most Golden Dragon Imperial Tiles.
- The player with the most remaining Jade Catalyst Tokens.
2.9 Rule Clarifications & Tile Etiquette
- Permanent Placement: Once an incoming tile from the staging tray is placed onto a grid cell and released from your hand, its placement is final and cannot be moved or recalled without spending a Jade Catalyst Token.
- Multi-Suit Incompatibility: Tiles of different suits (e.g., 3-Bamboo and 3-Circles) cannot merge together, even if they share the exact same numerical rank.
- Public Staging Information: All tiles currently displayed in the face-up Staging Tray are public knowledge; all players may inspect them at any time to plan future turns.
