Jewels of the Medici

Jewels of the Medici: Game Description & Official Rulebook

Part I: Game Description

1.1 Overview and Lore

Welcome to Jewels of the Medici, a captivating tabletop and digital strategy game of Renaissance intrigue, gem cutting, prestige acquisition, and economic diplomacy. Set in 15th-century Florence, Italy—the bustling heart of European art, culture, and commerce—players step into the influential shoes of Master Gem Artisans and Merchant Princes patronized by the legendary House of Medici.

In Jewels of the Medici, 1 to 4 players navigate the opulent world of Renaissance high finance, competing to acquire rare uncut gemstones from distant Mediterranean trade routes, refine raw crystals into exquisite jewelry pieces, and secure lavish patronage contracts from the ruling Medici dynasty, noble houses, and Vatican envoys. Beyond simple set collection, players must carefully manage influence across Florence's merchant guilds, manipulate market prices at the Ponte Vecchio, and strategically place crafted masterpieces in grand cathedrals and private family vaults to maximize long-term political sway.

Combining rich spatial arrangement, tight economic drafting, market speculation, and tactical resource engine-building, Jewels of the Medici delivers a sophisticated brain-teaser for casual strategists and hardcore Euro-game enthusiasts alike. Will you forge a sparkling legacy that earns the eternal favor of Lorenzo the Magnificent, or will rival workshop masters ruin your financial standing and relegate your name to the shadows of history?

1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design

Jewels of the Medici boasts a lavish visual design inspired by Italian Renaissance oil paintings, gold-leaf illuminations, illuminated manuscripts, and marble architecture. The central game board is framed by ornate gilded borders and Tuscan arches, while each masterpiece card is illustrated with museum-quality historical detail. To ensure complete accessibility for color-blind and visually impaired players, every gemstone type pairs distinct translucent color hues with unique geometric shape cuts (Rubies = Emerald Cut Rectangles, Sapphires = Oval Cabochons, Emeralds = Octagonal Cuts, Topazes = Triangular Trillions, Diamonds = Brilliant Round Cut).

1.4 Core Objectives

The primary objective in Jewels of the Medici is to accumulate the highest total Prestige Score (PS) by purchasing raw gemstones, refining them into cut jewels, crafting exquisite Masterpiece Jewelry Cards, and securing influential Renaissance Patrons before the grand Medici Jubilee concludes. Points are awarded through:

  1. Masterpiece Crafting: Completing jewelry blueprints with precise gem combinations.
  2. Patronage & Vault Placement: Assigning completed pieces to Medici vaults and noble collections.
  3. Guild Dominance: Controlling strategic influence nodes in the Florentine Guild Hall.
  4. Financial Solvency: Accumulating liquid Florin wealth and unused Medici Diamond reserves.

Part II: Gameplay Instructions

2.1 Core Mechanics & Crafting Rules

To master Jewels of the Medici, players must manage raw resources, furnace refinement pipelines, and gem-cutting constraints effectively.

Rule 1: The Refinement Pipeline

Raw gem ores acquired from the Ponte Vecchio cannot be directly crafted into masterpieces:

  • Uncut Gem Ore Tokens must first be placed into your Workshop's Furnace Slots.
  • Spending a Refine Action processes raw ore tokens into polished, cut Acrylic Gemstones (Rubies, Sapphires, Emeralds, Topazes), transferring them to your active Gem Vault.

Rule 2: Gem Synthesis and Diamond Crafting

  • Medici Diamonds are the rarest, most flexible gemstones in the game and cannot be bought directly from the market.
  • To synthesize 1 Medici Diamond, a player must pay 1 of each standard cut gem (1 Ruby, 1 Sapphire, 1 Emerald, 1 Topaz) to the central bank during an active crafting phase.
  • Medici Diamonds act as wildcard gemstones when completing standard contracts or can be spent to fulfill high-tier Papal Masterpiece requirements.

Rule 3: Workshop Capacity & Storage Limits

  • Your personal Workshop Board holds a maximum of 8 Raw Ore Tokens in the furnace and 12 Polished Gemstones in the vault.
  • Any surplus gems acquired beyond storage limits at the end of a turn must be sold to the Ponte Vecchio market at half price or discarded to the public bank.

2.2 Game Setup

  1. Prepare the Florentine Market Board: Place the central board in the middle of the play area within equal reach of all players.
  2. Stock the Gem Market: Fill the Ponte Vecchio gem tracks with initial stock: 5 Rubies, 5 Sapphires, 5 Emeralds, 3 Topazes, and 1 Medici Diamond. Place raw ore tokens in the central supply.
  3. Establish Market Decks:
    • Shuffle the Masterpiece Jewelry Cards and reveal 4 face-up cards to form the active Display Market.
    • Shuffle the Renaissance Patron Cards and reveal 3 face-up cards along the Patron Gallery.
  4. Initialize Player Workshops:
    • Each player receives a Workshop Board, 2 Starting Raw Ore Tokens, 5 Florin Coins, and 2 Guild Favor Markers.
    • Set personal scoring markers at space 0 on the outer Prestige Track.
  5. Determine the First Artisan: The player who most recently wore jewelry or visited an art museum goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.

2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play

Building a victorious workshop requires balancing immediate cash flow with long-term prestige accumulation. Master artisans utilize four primary tactical principles:

Technique 1: Furnace Streamlining

Avoid clogging your Workshop Furnace with unrefined raw ore. Spend turn actions to refine raw ore into polished gems early and often; a full furnace prevents you from taking advantage of cheap raw stone drops at the Ponte Vecchio.

Technique 2: Market Cornering & Speculation

Keep a close eye on your opponents' active Masterpiece Blueprints. If a rival master needs two Venetian Emeralds to complete a high-scoring Papal Tiara, buy up the remaining emerald supply from the market to inflate prices and force them to spend extra Florins!

Technique 3: Synergistic Patron Drafting

Draft Renaissance Patrons whose scoring requirements match your workshop's natural crafting focus. For example, patronizing Botticelli grants massive bonus points for every ruby-heavy necklace crafted, multiplying your standard blueprint points.

Technique 4: Guild Hall Maneuvers

Do not ignore the Guild Hall. Placing Guild Favor Markers on political tiles provides permanent cost discounts on raw materials, increases your furnace capacity, or grants free Florin dividends at the start of every round.

2.4 Structure of a Play Session

A complete game of Jewels of the Medici is played across 3 Eras (Early Renaissance, High Renaissance, Grand Medici Jubilee). Each Era consists of 4 rounds, with each round comprising three structured operational phases:

  1. Phase 1: Market & Guild Phase (Drafting)
    • In turn order, players choose one primary market action:
      • Purchase Raw Ore / Cut Gems from the Ponte Vecchio using Florins.
      • Draft a Masterpiece Blueprint from the display market.
      • Place a Guild Favor Marker in the Guild Hall to secure discounts or political leverage.
  2. Phase 2: Workshop & Crafting Phase (Execution)
    • Players execute workshop actions sequentially on their boards:
      • Refine Ore: Spend actions to turn raw ore into polished gems.
      • Craft Masterpiece: Pay required cut gems from your vault to complete a face-up blueprint card.
      • Synthesize Diamond: Exchange 4 distinct gems for 1 Medici Diamond.
  3. Phase 3: Patronage & Maintenance Phase (Reset)
    • Assign completed masterpieces to available Renaissance Patron cards or the Medici Family Vault to claim instant prestige points and bonus abilities.
    • Replenish the Ponte Vecchio market stock and card displays.
    • Pass the First Artisan Marker clockwise to the next player.

2.5 Masterpiece Blueprint Tiers & Crafting Specifications

Blueprint Tier Gem Cost Required Base Prestige Value Special Bonus / Feature
Merchant Ring (Tier I) 2 Standard Gems 5 to 8 Points Immediate +3 Florin Payout
Noble Brooch (Tier II) 4 Standard Gems 12 to 18 Points Unlocks 1 Extra Furnace Slot
Ducal Crown (Tier III) 6 Gems (Including 1 Topaz) 22 to 30 Points Grants 1 Guild Favor Marker
Medici Imperial Relic (Tier IV) 8 Gems (Including 1 Diamond) 35 to 50 Points Triggers Endgame Prestige Multiplier

2.6 Game Modes

2.6.1 Standard Renaissance Duel (2 to 4 Players - Competitive)

The core competitive experience. Players compete to build the most prestigious gem workshop in Florence, racing for limited Medici vault space, market stock, and high-value patron contracts across 3 Eras.

2.6.2 The Lorenzo Challenge (Solo Mode)

  • Setup: You play against an automated rival workshop master ("Lorenzo's Envoy") governed by an AI deck.
  • Objective: Out-score Lorenzo's Envoy before the end of the 3rd Era while fulfilling at least 3 specific Royal Medici Decrees without going bankrupt.

2.6.3 Merchant Alliance (4 Players - 2 vs 2 Team Mode)

Partners sit opposite each other and maintain separate workshop slates, but share a central Florentine Vault. Teammates can trade raw gems, share guild discounts, and pool resources to fulfill massive Papal Relic contracts!

2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix

Upon completing the 12th round (End of Era III), players tally their final scores on the central board using the following formula:

  • Completed Masterpiece Cards: Full point values printed on all crafted jewelry cards.
  • Renaissance Patron Bonuses: Victory points awarded by claimed patron cards for satisfying set conditions.
  • Medici Vault Holdings: +5 Points for each masterpiece placed directly in the Medici Family Vault.
  • Guild Dominance Bonus: +10 Points to the player controlling the most influence nodes in the Guild Hall.
  • Financial Surplus: +1 Point per 3 unspent Florin Coins; +3 Points per unused Medici Diamond.

2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions

A game of Jewels of the Medici concludes at the end of the 12th round, or immediately if any player successfully crafts their 3rd Medici Imperial Relic (Tier IV).

The player with the highest total Prestige Score (PS) is declared the Master Artisan of Florence and appointed Court Jeweler to the House of Medici!

Tie-Breakers

If two or more players tie for total prestige points, resolve the tie in the following order:

  1. The player who crafted the most Medici Imperial Relics (Tier IV).
  2. The player with the most remaining Medici Diamonds.
  3. The player with the most unspent Florin Coins.

2.9 Rule Clarifications & Artisan Etiquette

  • Public Gem Vaults: All cut gemstones and raw ore tokens on player boards must remain in open view at all times; players may not hide gem counts in closed hands.
  • Market Price Fluctuation: Purchasing gems from the Ponte Vecchio increases the market cost of that gem type for subsequent purchases in the same round by 1 Florin. Prices reset during Phase 3.
  • Undo Protocol: Once a gem or coin has been placed into the central bank to craft a masterpiece or complete a purchase, the action is final and cannot be undone.
