10x10 Arabic
10x10 Arabic: Game Description & Official Rulebook
Part I: Game Description
1.1 Overview and Lore
Welcome to 10x10 Arabic, a captivating, highly strategic block-placement puzzle game that fuses the timeless, spatial mechanics of classic 10x10 grid games with the rich, artistic heritage of Arabic typography and Islamic geometric art. Set within the tranquil atmosphere of the House of Wisdom, players take on the role of Master Calligraphers and Geometric Architects, tasked with arranging intricate block arrangements made up of Arabic letter shapes, geometric mosaic tiles, and arabesque motifs onto a grand $10 \times 10$ stone canvas.
In 10x10 Arabic, 1 to 4 players interact with an evolving grid canvas, placing modular geometric polyominoes styled after traditional Arabic letterforms (such as the sweeping curve of a Nūn, the sharp angle of a Kāf, or the tall upright line of an Alif). Unlike standard block-clearing games where pieces fall from the top of the screen under pressure of time, 10x10 Arabic offers a thoughtful, turn-based environment. Players draft pieces from a tray of three active tiles and place them onto the grid. Completing full horizontal rows or vertical columns clears those lines, earning points, freeing vital space, and unlocking special bonus combos.
Combining spatial foresight, pattern recognition, spatial management, and resource conservation, 10x10 Arabic delivers a deeply satisfying visual and intellectual challenge. Will you balance your canvas to engineer massive multi-line cascade clears, or will an uncalculated placement crowd your grid and leave your calligraphic masterpiece unfinished?
1.2 Component Inventory

1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design
10x10 Arabic features a breathtaking visual aesthetic inspired by classical Islamic architectural tiles, lapis lazuli inlays, gold leaf illuminations, and traditional calligraphy styles such as Kufic and Thuluth. Soft parchment tans, deep cobalt blues, rich turquoise, and radiant gold tones fill the board, creating a calming, luxurious visual experience. To ensure complete accessibility for color-blind and visually impaired players, every tile shape features distinct, high-contrast geometric borders and debossed calligraphy patterns alongside vibrant color hues.
1.4 Core Objectives
The primary objective in 10x10 Arabic is to achieve the highest possible Calligrapher Mastery Score (CMS) by strategically placing blocks onto the $10 \times 10$ grid, completing full lines, and managing open space before no valid moves remain. Points are earned through:
- Tile Placement: Earning points equal to the total number of squares contained within each placed block.
- Line Clears: Completing full 10-square horizontal rows or vertical columns to remove those tiles from the board.
- Cascade Multipliers: Clearing multiple rows or columns simultaneously in a single turn.
- Streak Continuity: Clearing lines on consecutive turns to trigger Calligraphic Flow bonuses.
Part II: Gameplay Instructions
2.1 Core Mechanics & Placement Rules
Understanding the drafting system and grid placement principles is essential to mastering 10x10 Arabic.
Rule 1: The Triad Drafting System
- Players are presented with three distinct polyomino block pieces in the face-up Tile Drafting Tray.
- You must place all three pieces onto the grid board, one at a time, before a new set of three pieces is drawn to refill the tray.
- You may place the three available pieces in any order you choose during your turn.
Rule 2: Grid Placement & Orientation
- A piece can be placed on any open cells on the $10 \times 10$ grid board, provided that all squares of the piece fit completely within the grid boundaries.
- Pieces cannot overlap previously placed tiles.
- Default Rule: Pieces must be placed in the exact orientation displayed in the drafting tray. Spending a Calligrapher’s Ink Token allows a player to rotate a piece 90 or 180 degrees before placement.
Rule 3: Line Clearing Mechanics
- Whenever a complete horizontal row of 10 cells or a vertical column of 10 cells is fully filled with tile squares, that entire line is immediately cleared and removed from the board.
- The cleared spaces instantly become open and available for future tile placements.
- If a placed piece simultaneously completes a row and a column (or multiple rows and columns), all affected lines clear at once, awarding exponential Mosaic Combo Points!
2.2 Game Setup
- Prepare the Central Canvas: Lay the $10 \times 10$ grid board flat in the center of the play area within equal reach of all players. Ensure all 100 cells are completely empty.
- Initialize the Block Supply: Place all calligraphic polyomino pieces into a draw bag or face-down supply pile and mix them thoroughly.
- Fill the Drafting Tray: Draw 3 random pieces from the supply and place them face-up in the three slots of the Tile Drafting Tray.
- Distribute Player Equipment:
- Give each player a Player Reference Console and a scoring marker.
- Distribute 3 Calligrapher’s Ink Tokens to each player for emergency tactical maneuvers.
- Place scoring markers at space 0 on the perimeter Inkwell Score Track.
- Determine the First Player: The player who most recently practiced calligraphy, solved a puzzle, or visited an art gallery goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.
2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play
Succeeding at 10x10 Arabic requires balancing immediate line clears with long-term structural canvas management. Master players employ four primary strategic techniques:
Technique 1: The $3 \times 3$ Reserve Rule
Always keep at least one corner or central section of your $10 \times 10$ board open enough to accommodate a large $3 \times 3$ square block or a 5-unit straight line tile. Filling up your board without leaving room for large pieces is the most common cause of a sudden game over!
Technique 2: Simultaneous Multi-Line Setup
Instead of clearing single rows immediately, build up several parallel rows or intersecting columns until they are each missing just one or two squares. Then, place a single branching piece (such as a $3 \times 3$ or an L-shape) that completes 3 or 4 lines at once, triggering a massive point multiplier!
Technique 3: Edge and Corner Anchoring
Place larger, awkward shapes along the outer edges and corners of the grid. Keeping the perimeter occupied while leaving the central $6 \times 6$ core clear allows maximum flexibility for fitting complex letterforms.
Technique 4: Tactical Ink Management
Save your Calligrapher’s Ink Tokens for critical moments when none of the three active pieces in the drafting tray can fit onto your board in their default orientation. Rotating a piece or spending a token to wipe a single blocking square can keep an incredible run alive!
2.4 Structure of a Play Session
A standard play session of 10x10 Arabic flows through four structured operational phases:
- Phase 1: Tray Inspection & Order Selection
- Examine the 3 active pieces in the Drafting Tray. Analyze the grid to determine the optimal sequence in which to place all 3 pieces.
- Phase 2: Tile Placement (Action Phase)
- Select 1 piece from the tray and place it onto open cells on the $10 \times 10$ grid.
- Optional Action: Spend 1 Calligrapher’s Ink Token to rotate the selected piece or reroll the remaining pieces in the tray.
- Phase 3: Line Resolution & Score Calculation
- Check for any completed 10-square horizontal rows or vertical columns.
- Clear completed lines from the board, return the cleared tile squares to the general supply, and log base placement and combo points on the perimeter track.
- Phase 4: Triad Refill & Turn Hand-Off
- Once all 3 pieces from the tray have been placed on the board, draw 3 new pieces from the supply to refill the Drafting Tray.
- Pass the turn clockwise to the next player.

2.6 Game Modes
2.6.1 Standard Solo Challenge (Single-Player Mode)
The definitive way to experience the game. Play continuously with a single grid board, placing pieces and clearing lines to achieve the highest personal score possible before running out of legal placement options.
2.6.2 Calligraphic Duel (2 to 4 Players - Competitive)
- Setup: All players play on their own individual $10 \times 10$ boards, but draw from a shared central Tile Drafting Tray.
- Gameplay: Players race to achieve the highest cumulative score over 10 complete drafting rounds.
- Victory: The player with the highest total score at the end of the 10th round wins!
2.6.3 Guild Expedition (2 Players - Cooperative)
Two players work together on a single shared $10 \times 10$ board, taking alternating turns placing pieces from the drafting tray. Communication is permitted, but players must work together to reach a target score of 2,500 points without filling the grid.
2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix
In all game modes, scores are calculated based on placement efficiency and clearing precision logged on the perimeter track:
- Piece Placement Points: 1 Point per individual square contained in a placed tile (e.g., placing a $3 \times 3$ block = 9 Points).
- Single Line Clear: 100 Points per completed row or column.
- Multi-Line Clear Multipliers:
- 2 Lines Simultaneously: 300 Points ($1.5\times$ Multiplier)
- 3 Lines Simultaneously: 600 Points ($2\times$ Multiplier)
- 4+ Lines Simultaneously: 1,200 Points ($3\times$ Multiplier!)
- Consecutive Turn Clear (Flow Streak): +50 Bonus Points for every consecutive turn in which at least one line is cleared.
- Unused Ink Tokens: +100 Bonus Points for each remaining Calligrapher’s Ink Token at game end.
2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions
A game of 10x10 Arabic ends immediately when the active player cannot legally place any of the remaining pieces from the active Drafting Tray onto the $10 \times 10$ grid board.
The player with the highest overall Calligrapher Mastery Score (CMS) logged on the scoring track is declared the Master Architect of the Realm!
Tie-Breakers
If two or more players tie for total points in competitive play, resolve the tie using the following criteria:
- The player who executed the highest single Multi-Line Clear during the game.
- The player with the most remaining Calligrapher’s Ink Tokens.
- The player who completed the most total individual line clears during the match.
2.9 Rule Clarifications & Cartographer Etiquette
- Permanent Touch Rule: Once a block tile is placed onto the grid board and released from your hand, its position is locked and cannot be moved or recalled.
- No Partial Placements: Every cell of a polyomino piece must fit legally onto open cells on the grid. You cannot overhang the edge of the $10 \times 10$ board or overlap another tile.
- Public Drafting Information: All pieces currently displayed in the face-up Tile Drafting Tray are public information; players may inspect them at any time to plan upcoming turns.
