Senet: Game Description & Official Manual

Part I: Game Description

1.1 Overview and Lore

Step back over five millennia into the sun-drenched temples, grand palaces, and sacred tombs of ancient Egypt in Senet (zn.t, meaning "passing" or "game of passing"), humanity's oldest known board game. Originating before 3100 BCE during the First Dynasty and cherished through the New Kingdom and beyond, Senet was far more than a pastime for pharaohs like Tutankhamun and Queen Nefertari. To the ancient Egyptians, the long, three-row wooden board represented the voyage of the human soul (Ka) through the Underworld (Duat). By rolling throwing sticks, maneuvering carved gaming pieces across sacred symbols, and overcoming treacherous hazards, players symbolically enacted the passage of the deceased toward rebirth and eternal union with the sun god Ra.

In Senet, two players compete in a classical race game of tactical movement, spatial blocking, and risk management. Played upon an iconic $3 \times 10$ grid featuring 30 squares ("houses"), each player commands a set of five or seven distinctive pawns—traditionally styled as spools and cones. Pawns traverse the board along a serpentine, "S"-shaped path starting at the top-left square, snaking through the middle row, and navigating the perilous final stretch toward eternal life. Rather than modern numbered dice, players toss four two-sided casting sticks to determine movement distances. Success demands a delicate balance of aggressive tactical captures, defensive formations, and shrewd positioning around the mystical Houses of Blessing, Water, and Rebirth.

Designed for board game historians, strategy purists, tabletop enthusiasts, and casual players seeking a deep cultural artifact, Senet captures the authentic, reverent aesthetic of ancient Egyptian craft. Every move delivers rich tactile feedback—polished cedar and faience tiles sliding across papyrus-inlaid boards, crisp wooden clacks of tossed two-tone sticks, and glowing hieroglyphic illuminations when landing on sacred squares. Featuring customizable rule variations (including the historic Kendall and Kendall-Kendall reconstructions), competitive local and online multiplayer, AI pharaoh opponents, and detailed historical archives, Senet offers a timeless bridge to antiquity where every move is a step toward immortality.

1.2 Component Inventory & Player HUD Layout

Whether played through fluid touch gestures on tablet screens or precise point-and-click interactions on desktop displays, Senet presents a clean, high-contrast, ancient papyrus interface:

  • 1 Central Senet Board (The Passage Grid):
    • The 30 Houses: A grid composed of 3 rows of 10 squares each, ordered from Square 1 (top-left) to Square 30 (bottom-right).
    • Special Hieroglyphic Squares: Distinctly carved houses in the final row carrying spiritual significance and unique movement mechanics (Square 15: House of Rebirth; Square 26: House of Happiness/Blessing; Square 27: House of Water; Square 28: House of the Three Truths; Square 29: House of Re-Atum; Square 30: The Horizon/Exit).
  • 1 Player Pawn Set (10 or 14 Pieces Total):
    • Player 1 (Spools / White Faience): 5 or 7 raised spool-shaped pawns.
    • Player 2 (Cones / Dark Cedar): 5 or 7 pointed cone-shaped pawns.
  • 1 Ritual Casting Area (The Throwing Sticks):
    • 4 Two-Sided Casting Sticks: Flat wooden sticks featuring a light side (painted or white) and a dark side (carved or bark).
  • 1 Royal Scribe HUD:
    • Stick Result Indicator: Displays the numerical roll value ($1, 2, 3, 4, \text{ or } 5$) resulting from the active stick toss, alongside bonus turn indicators.
    • Turn Chronometer: Tracks active player turn limits in timed match formats.
    • Soul Bearing Counter: Tracks the real-time tally of pawns successfully borne off the board (e.g., $3 / 5 \text{ Pawns Reborn}$).

1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Acoustic Atmosphere

Senet surrounds players in an authentic, high-contrast Egyptian tomb aesthetic engineered for visual elegance and historic immersion:

  • Ancient Artistry Visuals: High-definition 2D and 3D graphics featuring gilded limestone and cedar board textures, hand-painted wall frescoes, dynamic torchlight shadows, polished lapis lazuli and gold pawn accents, and glowing hieroglyphic particle trails.
  • Authentic Acoustic Soundscape: A serene, historic musical score featuring ancient Egyptian sistrums, frame drums, wooden flutes, and harps, accompanied by the heavy clack of wooden sticks hitting stone, smooth tile glides, and a triumphant horn chime when a soul reaches eternity.

1.4 Core Objectives

The primary objective in Senet is to navigate all of your pawns along the 30-square S-shaped track, successfully passing through the dangerous final houses and bearing every piece off the board before your opponent.

Player performance is evaluated through:

  1. Complete Soul Bearing: Bearing off $100\%$ of your pawns off Square 30 before your opponent completes their journey.
  2. Tactical Blockades: Establishing impenetrable defense chains of adjacent pawns to restrict opponent movement options.
  3. Hazard Navigation: Successfully maneuvering through the House of Water without losing critical positional momentum.
  4. Match Victory Ratings: Earning Royal Cartouche honors by achieving dominant victories with zero pawns trapped in the House of Rebirth.

Part II: Gameplay Instructions

2.1 Core Mechanics & Throwing Stick Values

Movement in Senet is governed by tossing four two-sided casting sticks.

Rule 1: The Casting Stick Formulas

Players toss the four sticks onto the casting mat to determine their movement allowance:

  • 1 Light Side Up + 3 Dark Sides Up: Move 1 Square + Earn a Bonus Roll!
  • 2 Light Sides Up + 2 Dark Sides Up: Move 2 Squares.
  • 3 Light Sides Up + 1 Dark Side Up: Move 3 Squares.
  • 4 Light Sides Up + 0 Dark Sides Up: Move 4 Squares + Earn a Bonus Roll!
  • 0 Light Sides Up + 4 Dark Sides Up (All Dark): Move 5 Squares + Earn a Bonus Roll!

$$\text{Roll Value} = \begin{cases} 1 & \text{if 1 Light Side} \quad (\text{Bonus Turn}) \ 2 & \text{if 2 Light Sides} \ 3 & \text{if 3 Light Sides} \ 4 & \text{if 4 Light Sides} \quad (\text{Bonus Turn}) \ 5 & \text{if 0 Light Sides} \quad (\text{Bonus Turn}) \end{cases}$$

Rule 2: The S-Shaped Track Pathway

Pawns move strictly in ascending numerical order following an "S" curve across the 30 squares:

  • Top Row (Squares 1 to 10): Moves left-to-right ($\rightarrow$).
  • Middle Row (Squares 11 to 20): Drops down to 11 and moves right-to-left ($\leftarrow$).
  • Bottom Row (Squares 21 to 30): Drops down to 21 and moves left-to-right ($\rightarrow$).

$$\text{Path Flow:} \quad 1 \rightarrow 10 \quad \implies \quad 20 \leftarrow 11 \quad \implies \quad 21 \rightarrow 30 \text{ (Exit)}$$

Rule 3: Capturing & Swapping Mechanics

  • Landing on a square occupied by an unprotected single opponent pawn captures that square!
  • The Attack/Swap Rule: Capturing does not eliminate the opponent's pawn from the board. Instead, your pawn takes the target square, and the opponent's pawn is swapped backward to the square your attacking pawn just vacated.

$$\text{Attack Action} \implies (\text{Attacker Pos} \rightarrow \text{Target Pos}) \quad \land \quad (\text{Target Pawn Pos} \rightarrow \text{Attacker's Old Pos})$$

Rule 4: Defensive Formations (Protected & Blocked Pawns)

  • Protected Pair (2 Adjacent Pawns): When two pawns of the same color stand on adjacent squares (e.g., Squares 12 and 13), they form a protective bond. Neither pawn can be attacked or swapped by the opponent.
  • Impenetrable Blockade (3+ Adjacent Pawns): When three or more pawns of the same color stand on consecutive adjacent squares (e.g., Squares 5, 6, and 7), they create a wall. The opponent cannot land on, attack, or jump over any square in that blockade!

2.2 Special Hieroglyphic Houses

The final row of the board contains ancient, sacred squares that govern the climax of the game:

House # & Name Hieroglyphic Symbol Functional Rule Mechanics & Hazards
Square 15: House of Rebirth Ankh Symbol Safe zone; serves as the respawn landing point for pawns drowned in Square 27
Square 26: House of Happiness Beauty / Festive Symbol Mandatory stopping point; all pawns must land here before proceeding to final houses
Square 27: House of Water Wavy Water Lines The Drowning Trap; landing here instantly sends the pawn back to Square 15 (or Square 1 if 15 is occupied)
Square 28: House of Three Truths Three Standing Figures Safe zone; requires an exact roll of 3 to bear off directly from this square
Square 29: House of Re-Atum Two Solar Gods Safe zone; requires an exact roll of 2 to bear off directly from this square
Square 30: The Horizon / Exit Rising Sun Symbol The final square; requires an exact roll of 1 (or exact clearance roll) to be born off into eternity

2.3 Game Setup & Initial Board Layout

  1. Select Pawn Set: Choose between 5-pawn or 7-pawn rule configurations.
  2. Initial Pawn Placement (Standard Historical Setup): Pawns are placed in alternating sequence across the first row:
    • Square 1: Player 1 (Spool 1)
    • Square 2: Player 2 (Cone 1)
    • Square 3: Player 1 (Spool 2)
    • Square 4: Player 2 (Cone 2) ... continuing across the first 10 or 14 squares.
  3. Determining First Move: Player 1 tosses the casting sticks. The first player to toss a 1 takes control of the Spool pawns, executes that move, and begins the game!

2.4 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Strategy

Navigating the passage to eternity requires clever defensive positioning and precise risk assessment. Master players rely on four primary strategies:

Technique 1: Maintaining Connected Pairs (The Shield Wall)

Never leave isolated single pawns exposed on the middle row! Move your pawns in pairs so they land on adjacent squares. A connected pair creates a safe haven that immune-shields your pieces against opponent attacks and backward swaps.

Technique 2: Constructing 3-Tile Blockades

Attempt to align three consecutive pawns across narrow corridors (such as Squares 10, 11, 12)! A 3-pawn wall halts all opponent movement behind it, effectively trapping enemy pieces and forcing them to waste turns or make disadvantageous moves.

Technique 3: Tactical Staging at the House of Happiness (Square 26)

Square 26 is the gatekeeper to victory! Stage multiple pawns on or immediately before Square 26 so you can safely leap across the treacherous House of Water (Square 27) on subsequent exact rolls of 3, 4, or 5.

Technique 4: Weaponizing the House of Water

If an opponent's pawn is trapped on Square 26 without protection, attack it! Swapping your pawn onto Square 26 pushes the opponent's pawn backward onto Square 27 (House of Water), instantly drowning it and sending it all the way back to the House of Rebirth (Square 15).

2.5 Structure of an Active Gameplay Loop

Gameplay in Senet follows a disciplined, highly rhythmic operational cycle:

  1. Phase 1: Casting the Sticks
    • Toss the 4 casting sticks onto the mat to generate a movement allowance ($1, 2, 3, 4, \text{ or } 5$).
  2. Phase 2: Valid Move Identification
    • Identify all eligible pawns that can legally move forward by the rolled distance without landing on or jumping over illegal blockades.
  3. Phase 3: Tactical Movement & Interaction
    • Option A (Standard Move): Advance a pawn into an open house.
    • Option B (Attack/Swap): Land on an unprotected enemy pawn, swapping its position backward.
    • Option C (Hazard Trigger): Land on Square 27, sending the pawn back to Square 15.
    • Option D (No Legal Move): If no legal move is possible, the turn is forfeited.
  4. Phase 4: Bonus Roll or Turn Pass
    • If you rolled a 1, 4, or 5, retain control of the sticks and take an immediate bonus turn!
    • Otherwise, pass the sticks to your opponent.

2.6 Game Modes & Historical Rule Variants

2.6.1 Kendall Reconstruction (Standard Competitive Rules)

The most widely accepted modern reconstruction of Senet rules (developed by archaeologist Timothy Kendall). Features alternating starting setups, strict 3-pawn blockades, mandatory stops at Square 26, and exact-roll bearing off from Squares 28, 29, and 30.

2.6.2 Bell Reconstruction (Casual Arcade Variant)

A streamlined, faster-paced variation formulated by R.C. Bell. Pawns start off the board and enter sequentially via rolls. Features simplified capture mechanics and direct bearing off without mandatory exact rolls on final houses.

2.6.3 Tomb of Nefertari (Single-Player Campaign)

A rich historical campaign mode where players challenge famous pharaohs, high priests, and deities across 12 historic Egyptian dynasties, unlocking authentic museum artifacts, custom board materials, and tomb inscriptions.

2.7 Match Settlement & Scoring Formula

Final match performance and cartouche honors are calculated upon bearing off your final pawn:

$$\text{Final Score} = (\text{Pawns Borne Off} \times 1000) - (\text{Opponent Pawns Borne Off} \times 500) + (\text{Time Bonus}) + (\text{Flawless Rebirth Bonus})$$

  • Pharaoh's Triumph Bonus: $+2,500$ Points awarded for bearing off all 5 pawns before your opponent bears off a single piece.
  • Royal Cartouche Ratings:
    • Bronze Cartouche: Win the match by bearing off all pawns.
    • Silver Cartouche: Win the match with the opponent having 2 or fewer pawns borne off.
    • Gold Cartouche: Master the passage! Win the match rapidly, suffering zero drownings in the House of Water!

2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions

A match of Senet officially concludes upon reaching either of two final outcomes:

  1. Passage Completed (Victory Condition): A player legally bears their final remaining pawn off Square 30 of the board. A victorious Egyptian fanfare sounds, golden light illuminates the board, cartouche medals are awarded, and victory stats enter the royal ledger!
  2. Surrender / Timeout: Occurs in competitive online play when a player forfeits or runs out of turn time, awarding immediate match victory to the opponent.

The player who masters casting stick probabilities, builds unbreakable blockades, and navigates the House of Water with wisdom earns the revered title of Grand Hierophant of the Passage!

2.9 System Integrity & Field Settings

  • Historical Rule Editor: Toggle specific archaeological rule variants (e.g., Kendall vs. Bell vs. Pitcher rules, 5 vs. 7 pawns, exact vs. flexible final rolls).
  • Hieroglyphic Tooltips: Optional hovering guide text detailing the historical meaning and translation of every symbol on the board.
  • Cross-Platform Cloud Sync: Match progress, earned cartouche badges, unlocked board skins (Cedar, Limestone, Ebony, Gold), and global leaderboards sync seamlessly across mobile devices, tablets, and desktop displays.
