President: Game Description & Official Manual

Part I: Game Description

1.1 Overview and Lore

Step into the cutthroat, fast-paced arena of social hierarchy, card shedding, and political maneuvering in President (also globally celebrated as Scum, Asshole, Capitalism, or Warlords & Scumbags), the definitive classic trick-taking card game set within The High Society Parlor. Bringing centuries of climbing-game traditions into a polished, competitive digital environment, this game challenges 4 to 8 players to rapidly shed their hands of cards to secure their place at the top of the social ladder. In the realm of President, egalitarian balance exists for only a single fleeting turn; as soon as the first card hits the felt, a rigid feudal structure takes hold, establishing a dynamic hierarchy where the victorious rule supreme and the defeated are forced to serve.

In President, every round is a high-stakes race to empty your hand. Players take turns playing single cards or matching card combinations (such as Pairs, Triples, or Quadruplets) of equal or higher rank than the active meld on the table. However, the true genius of President lies not merely in shedding cards, but in the ruthless social mechanics enforced between rounds. The highest-ranking player at the end of a hand is crowned the President, earning absolute privilege, first choice of seating, and the right to claim the finest cards from the lowest-ranked player in the next round. Conversely, the last player remaining with cards in hand is branded the Scum, forced to give up their most powerful cards as taxation while cleaning the table for the ruling class.

Designed for social gatherings, party gamers, and competitive shedding-game strategists alike, President combines lighthearted social drama with deep tactical hand management. Players must balance aggressive clearing strategies against long-term card retention, knowing when to hold powerful high cards or Deuces ($2\text{s}$) to break an opponent's control of the board. Complete with crisp high-definition card rendering, customizable parlor backgrounds, reactive avatar animations, and adaptable rulesets (including Revolution, Equaliser Clearing, and Joker wildcards), President delivers an endlessly replayable card experience where fortune can shift in an instant, turning a humble Scum into an absolute monarch.

1.2 Component Inventory & Player HUD Layout

Whether played via intuitive touch-and-drag controls on mobile touchscreens or crisp point-and-click mouse interfaces on desktop screens, President presents a sleek, highly organized table view:

  • 1 Central Table Felt (The Hierarchy Canvas):
    • The Center Play Pile: The active discard area where players drop higher-ranking single cards or matching card sets.
    • The Social Ladder Bench: Visual seat positions around the table that dynamically rearrange between rounds to reflect player ranks (President, Vice-President, Neutral/Citizen, Vice-Scum, Scum).
  • 1 Hand Management Bar:
    • Player Card Fan: The active hand of cards, automatically sorted by rank from lowest ($3$) to highest ($2$ or Joker) with visual indicators highlighting legal playable sets.
  • 1 Social Hierarchy HUD & Status Monitor:
    • Rank Badge Monitor: Displays active titles, win streak counters, and taxation status for every player at the table.
    • Turn Timer & Pass Tracker: Tracks remaining decision time and indicates which players have passed on the active trick.
  • 1 Rulebook & Variant Palette:
    • Taxation Panel: Displays the automatic card exchange interface during the pre-round hierarchy settlement phase.
    • Revolution Indicator: Lights up when a Quadruplet ($4$-of-a-kind) is played, signaling that card rankings have completely inverted!

1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Acoustic Atmosphere

President surrounds players with an opulent yet playful social parlor atmosphere designed to amplify the thrill of victory and the humor of defeat:

  • High-Definition Parlor Visuals: Crisp 2D vector graphics featuring luxurious mahogany tables, customizable velvet felts, dynamic rank badges (gilded crowns for the President, tattered banners for the Scum), smooth card-sliding physics, and celebratory confetti showers upon ascending the ladder.
  • Expressive Acoustic Design: A cheerful jazz and lounge soundtrack accompanied by realistic card-snapping sounds, dramatic brass fanfares when a President wins, comedic slide-whistle effects when a Scum finishes last, and crisp gavel strikes when a trick is cleared.

1.4 Core Objectives

The primary objective in President is to shed all cards from your hand before your opponents, ascending to the rank of President for the subsequent round while avoiding the shameful position of Scum.

Player performance is evaluated through:

  1. Hand Shedding Speed: Finishing $1\text{st}$ in a round to claim the maximum hierarchy title and score points.
  2. Taxation Privilege: Securing high titles to harvest top-tier cards from lower-ranked opponents in subsequent rounds.
  3. Hierarchy Maintenance: Maintaining the President title across consecutive rounds to build lucrative win streaks.
  4. Scum Revolutions: Successfully triggering Revolutions or strategic passes to overthrow ruling players from the bottom of the ladder.

Part II: Gameplay Instructions & Hierarchy Manual

2.1 Card Values & The Hierarchy Ruleset

Mastering President requires strict adherence to card ranking orders, set-matching laws, and passing rules.

Rule 1: The Base Card Ranking Order

Under standard play, cards are ranked from lowest to highest value regardless of suit. The $3$ is the absolute lowest card, while the $2$ acts as the supreme power card:

$$\text{Card Rank (Low to High): } 3 \rightarrow 4 \rightarrow 5 \rightarrow 6 \rightarrow 7 \rightarrow 8 \rightarrow 9 \rightarrow 10 \rightarrow \text{Jack} \rightarrow \text{Queen} \rightarrow \text{King} \rightarrow \text{Ace} \rightarrow 2$$

  • Suits: Suits generally carry no comparative value (e.g., $5\text{ of Spades}$ is equal to $5\text{ of Hearts}$).
  • The Supreme Deuce ($2$): Playing a single $2$ immediately clears the active center pile, ends the trick, and grants the player who played it the right to start the next trick with any card or set of their choice!

Rule 2: Matching Structure & Set Rules

  • A player may open a trick with a Single, a Pair (2 matching ranks), a Triple (3 matching ranks), or a Quadruplet (4 matching ranks).
  • Subsequent players must match the exact quantity of cards played! If a Pair of $6\text{s}$ is played, the next player must play a Pair of $6\text{s}$ or higher (e.g., Pair of $9\text{s}$, Pair of Aces). You cannot play a single card onto a pair or a pair onto a single.

$$\text{Valid Response} = \text{Matching Quantity} \quad \text{AND} \quad \text{Equal or Higher Rank}$$

Rule 3: The Passing Law

  • If a player cannot or chooses not to play a card on their turn, they must Pass.
  • Passing does not permanently disqualify a player from the entire round; however, under standard rules, once all other players pass in succession, the trick ends. The last player to lay a card clears the pile and opens the next trick.

2.2 Social Hierarchy Titles & Roles

The order in which players shed their last card determines their official social title for the next round:

Title Rank Finish Order Taxation Privilege & Social Status
President $1\text{st}$ to finish Receives the 2 highest cards from Scum; gives Scum any 2 unwanted cards. Opens first in the next round.
Vice-President $2\text{nd}$ to finish Receives the 1 highest card from Vice-Scum; gives Vice-Scum any 1 unwanted card.
Citizen (Neutral) Middle finisher(s) No taxation exchange. Retains neutral status.
Vice-Scum $2\text{nd-to-last}$ to finish Must surrender their 1 highest card to the Vice-President.
Scum Last to finish Must surrender their 2 highest cards to the President. Must gather and shuffle cards for the next deal.

2.3 Game Setup & Round Sequence

  1. First Round Setup: Deal the entire 52-card deck evenly to all players (some players may receive 1 extra card depending on player count). The player holding the $3\text{ of Clubs}$ opens the first trick of the game.
  2. Taxation Phase (Rounds 2+): Before card play begins, taxation occurs automatically:
    • Scum hands their 2 absolute highest cards (e.g., $2\text{s}$ or Aces) to the President.
    • President gives any 2 cards of their choice back to Scum.
    • Vice-Scum hands their 1 highest card to the Vice-President.
    • Vice-President gives any 1 card of their choice back to Vice-Scum.
  3. Active Play: The President opens the first trick with any valid single or set. Play moves clockwise around the table.

2.4 Advanced Rules & Strategic House Variants

Customized house rules can be toggled in game settings to add chaos and depth:

Variant 1: Revolution! (4-of-a-Kind Inversion)

Playing a Quadruplet (4 cards of the same rank) triggers an immediate Revolution! For the remainder of the round, the entire card hierarchy is completely inverted:

  • $3\text{ becomes the highest power card}$, while $2\text{ becomes the lowest}$!
  • A second Quadruplet played during the same round triggers a Counter-Revolution, restoring normal card rankings.

$$\text{Revolution Rank: } 2 \rightarrow \text{Ace} \rightarrow \text{King} \rightarrow \text{Queen} \rightarrow \text{Jack} \rightarrow 10 \rightarrow 9 \rightarrow 8 \rightarrow 7 \rightarrow 6 \rightarrow 5 \rightarrow 4 \rightarrow 3$$

Variant 2: Equaliser / Completion Clears

  • Equaliser Matches: Playing a card of the exact same rank as the top active card (e.g., playing an $8$ on an $8$) skips the next player's turn!
  • Completion Clear: If four cards of the same rank are played across multiple turns in a single trick (e.g., Player A plays two $7\text{s}$, Player B plays two $7\text{s}$), the pile clears instantly, granting the clearing player the next lead.

Variant 3: Scum Coup / President's Demise

If the reigning President finishes last in a round (becoming the new Scum), they suffer a Presidential Fall! In the next round, they are penalized by surrendering their 3 highest cards to the new President.

2.5 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Strategy

Shedding your hand efficiently requires long-term card counting and tactical sequence management. Master players rely on four core techniques:

Technique 1: Deuce Control & Pile Clearing

Never waste a $2$ early in a hand on a low-value trick unless it guarantees you can regain control to dump a large group of weak cards! Holding a $2$ allows you to break an opponent's momentum, clear the table, and lead your remaining weak singles ($3\text{s}, 4\text{s}, 5\text{s}$).

Technique 2: Low-Card Set Elimination

Prioritize leading pairs or triples composed of low-rank cards ($3\text{s}, 4\text{s}, 5\text{s}$) whenever you win a lead! It is significantly easier for opponents to beat low single cards than it is for them to match low pairs or triples.

Technique 3: Tactical Passing (Baiting)

Do not play a higher card just because you can! If an opponent leads a middle card and you hold a potential winning card, passing allows other players to exhaust their high cards first, clearing the field for your late-game dominance.

Technique 4: Scum Survival Strategy

When stuck in the Scum role, focus entirely on creating matching pairs or sets from your dealt cards before taxation! Because you must surrender your top single cards, building strong low-rank sets gives you the best chance of breaking leads and rising out of the cellar.

2.6 Structure of an Active Gameplay Loop

Gameplay in President flows through a dynamic, highly social card cycle:

  1. Phase 1: Taxation & Hand Assessment
    • Ranks exchange mandated tax cards, evaluate new hand strengths, and organize sets.
  2. Phase 2: Lead & Trick Building
    • The lead player sets the trick structure (Single, Pair, Triple); players respond with equal or higher sets or pass.
  3. Phase 3: Trick Clearance & Lead Reset
    • A $2$ is played or all players pass, clearing the center pile and granting the lead to the last active player.
  4. Phase 4: Hierarchy Settlement & Title Awarding
    • Players shed their final cards, updating social rank titles and resetting the table for the next round!

2.7 Round Settlement & Point System

While social hierarchy dictates table positions, tournament match scoring tracks performance across multiple rounds:

$$\text{Round Score} = (\text{Base Title Points}) + (\text{Consecutive President Retention Bonus}) - (\text{Scum Penalties})$$

  • Title Point Allocations:
    • President: 5 Points
    • Vice-President: 3 Points
    • Citizen: 1 Point
    • Vice-Scum: 0 Points
    • Scum: -2 Points
  • Match Victory Condition: The first player to reach 20 cumulative points or retain the President title for 3 consecutive rounds wins the overall match!

2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions

A complete session of President officially concludes upon reaching either of two outcomes:

  1. Grand Sovereign Victory (Match Clear): A player accumulates target tournament points or maintains unbroken President status across three consecutive rounds. A victory fanfare plays, displaying a gilded crown badge and crowning the overall champion!
  2. Scum Lockout (Defeat State): A player remains trapped in the Scum position for 3 consecutive rounds without rising. The player is awarded the "Perpetual Scum" consolation trophy, with options to re-deal or reshuffle table seating.

The player who manages card sets with precision, executes timely passes, and dominates taxation mechanics earns the revered title of Grand President of the Realm!

2.9 System Integrity & Field Settings

  • Automated Taxation Toggle: Enables or disables instant AI handling of pre-round card taxes for high-speed play.
  • Custom House Rule Preset: Save and load custom combinations of Revolution, Equaliser, and Joker wildcards for local or online multiplayer games.
  • Cross-Platform Cloud Sync: Profile statistics, win-loss records, unlocked card deck skins, and rank titles sync automatically across desktop and mobile devices.
