Pet Link: Game Description & Official Manual

Part I: Game Description

1.1 Overview and Lore

Step into a vibrant, sun-drenched sanctuary of lovable creatures and captivating visual puzzles in Pet Link, an exhilarating tile-connection strategy game set within the charming meadows of Whispering Paw Valley. Across this tranquil haven, dozens of friendly animals—playful puppies, curious kittens, cheerful bunnies, fluffy pandas, tiny hamsters, energetic parrots, and playful foxes—spend their days roaming free across floating grid pastures. However, a playful magic storm has swept across the valley, scattering colorful animal tiles and tangling their pathways with enchanted vines, frozen frost, and sparkling starlight barriers. Guided by Barnaby the Golden Retriever, your mission is to clear the pastures by linking matching pet tiles using clean, unblocked lines before time runs out.

In Pet Link, classic "Onet" (Mahjong Connect) tile-matching mechanics are upgraded into a modern visual puzzle experience. Players must carefully analyze the grid to connect identical pet icons using connecting lines that make no more than two 90-degree turns. As matching tiles are linked and cleared from the board, dynamic gravity rules take effect: remaining tiles slide downward, shift laterally, or remain locked in floating structures, continuously opening up new line trajectories while introducing fresh layout challenges. Success requires swift visual scanning, route planning, spatial foresight, and effective tactical usage of specialized boosters.

Designed for puzzle fans, casual gamers, pet lovers, and strategy enthusiasts of all ages, Pet Link delivers a perfect mix of relaxing visual aesthetics and stimulating mental exercise. Every valid connection draws a glowing light trail across the board, accompanied by lively animal sound effects, heart animations, and crisp acoustic audio feedback. Featuring hundreds of handcrafted campaign stages, dynamic gravity modes, a stress-free endless sanctuary mode, and customizable pet tile sets, Pet Link offers an irresistible journey into a magical world of pet-matching fun.

1.2 Component Inventory & Player HUD Layout

Whether played via responsive touch controls on mobile devices or precision mouse tracking on desktop computers, Pet Link features a clean, highly intuitive operational layout:

  • 1 Primary Pet Board (The Meadow Grid):
    • The Pet Tile Grid: A dynamic rectangular grid filled with colorful 2D/3D pet tiles (Puppies, Kittens, Bunnies, Pandas, Hamsters, Parrots, Foxes, and Koalas).
    • Environmental Obstacles: Stationary Wooden Blocks, Star Locks, Frozen Ice Tiles, and Ribbon Chains that block connecting paths.
  • 1 Valley Navigator HUD:
    • Timer & Move Counter Bar: Displays remaining time or move counts left to clear the active level.
    • Tile Clearance Tracker: Displays real-time progress for tiles remaining on the grid (e.g., $16 / 72 \text{ Tiles Remaining}$).
  • 1 Barnaby’s Utility Dock:
    • Magic Bone (Hint): Highlights a guaranteed valid pair of matching tiles currently connectable on the board.
    • Whistle Shuffle: Scrambles all uncleared tiles on the board into new positions when no valid paths remain.
    • Paw Strike (Bomb): Instantly removes a selected pair of matching tiles regardless of distance or path obstructions.

1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Acoustic Atmosphere

Pet Link surrounds players in a cozy, high-contrast environment designed for visual comfort and mental focus:

  • Charming Pastoral Visuals: High-definition hand-drawn artwork featuring glowing pastel landscapes, animated pet expressions, sparkling particle effects, dynamic cloud shadows, and soft ambient lighting.
  • Cheerful Acoustic Soundscape: A soothing acoustic soundtrack featuring acoustic guitar melodies, soft piano chords, cute animal sounds upon matching (meows, barks, squeaks), and crisp bell chimes upon clearing board objectives.

1.4 Core Objectives

The primary objective in Pet Link is to discover, link, and clear all matching pairs of pet tiles on the grid using valid connecting lines within the allowed time limit or move allowance.

Player performance is evaluated through:

  1. Full Board Clearance: Removing $100\%$ of tiles from the board grid.
  2. Linking Precision: Making valid connections efficiently without clicking blocked paths.
  3. Combo Execution: Linking matching pairs in quick succession to build and maintain high score multipliers.
  4. Valley Distinction: Clearing stages quickly with minimal booster usage to earn 3 Golden Paw Badges.

Part II: Gameplay Instructions

2.1 Core Rules & Path Connection Mechanics

Mastering Pet Link relies on understanding the fundamental "Two-Turn Path Rule" governing all valid tile connections.

Rule 1: The Two-Turn Path Rule (Onet Mechanics)

  • Two tiles can be connected and cleared if and only if they display the exact same pet icon.
  • The connecting line drawn between the two selected tiles can consist of at most three straight segments, which means it can make a maximum of two 90-degree right-angle turns.
  • The path cannot cross or pass through any other occupied tile or physical obstacle on the board.
  • Paths are fully permitted to route through empty grid spaces as well as outside the outer boundary of the board.

$$\text{Valid Connection} \iff \text{Matching Pets} \quad \land \quad \text{Turns} \le 2 \quad \land \quad \text{Path Is Unobstructed}$$

Rule 2: Adjacent & Boundary Linking

  • Direct Contact: Identical tiles sharing an adjacent edge (top, bottom, left, or right) clear immediately with a straight 0-turn line.
  • Boundary Tracing: Tiles situated along the outer edge of the grid can connect to each other by routing their path around the external perimeter of the board.

Rule 3: The Board Reshuffle Trigger

  • If the board reaches a state where zero valid connecting matches remain among uncleared tiles, the system automatically triggers an Auto-Shuffle.
  • The remaining tiles are rearranged into new positions to guarantee at least one valid connectable pair. (In hard difficulty modes, manual shuffle boosters must be used).

2.2 Game Setup & Match Initialization

  1. Select Meadow Node: Choose an active level on the Valley World Map (e.g., Level 1: Sunlit Pasture, Level 5: Frosty Lake, or Level 10: Whispering Canopy).
  2. Review Level Parameters: Check the grid dimensions, total tile count, active board gravity direction, timer length, and available pre-game boosters.
  3. Initialize Grid: The pet tiles populate the board in a randomized, solvable grid layout, the countdown timer initializes, and the connection challenge begins!

2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Strategy

Clearing dense boards before time runs out requires disciplined visual scanning and smart spatial planning. Master players rely on four primary tactics:

Technique 1: Boundary-First Clearing

Focus on matching tiles along the outer perimeter of the grid first! Clearing boundary tiles expands outer routing paths, allowing lines from inner tiles to wrap around the entire board without hitting obstacles.

Technique 2: Opening Central Lanes

Locate dense clusters in the middle of the board that block long horizontal or vertical sightlines. Clearing a central pair early creates open corridors across the board, increasing valid path options for surrounding tiles.

Technique 3: Calculating Gravity Shifts

In stages featuring dynamic gravity rules (where tiles drop down, slide up, or shift sideways after a match), evaluate how the board will settle before selecting a pair! Shifting tiles can automatically realign identical pets into adjacent positions for effortless follow-up matches.

Technique 4: Speed Combo Chaining

Aim to execute consecutive tile matches within 2 seconds of each other. Maintaining an active "Link Combo" adds bonus seconds back to the countdown clock and significantly increases your final score.

2.4 Structure of an Active Gameplay Loop

Gameplay in Pet Link follows a fast-paced, highly satisfying tactical cycle:

  1. Phase 1: Outer Board Scan
    • Scan the edges and adjacent pairs for instant, zero-turn or single-turn matches to open peripheral space.
  2. Phase 2: Corridor Clearing
    • Work into the interior of the board, removing blocking tiles to create open vertical and horizontal sightlines.
  3. Phase 3: Deep Match Execution & Cascade Shift
    • Connect inner pairs, trigger dynamic gravity shifts, and let falling tiles settle into new matching alignments.
  4. Phase 4: Board Clearance & Star Award
    • Clear the final pair of pet tiles! A celebratory light stream erupts, remaining time converts into bonus points, and 3-Paw rewards are granted.

2.5 Magic Boosters & Obstacle Registry

Specialized items and interactive environmental mechanics add rich strategic depth to puzzle solving:

Feature / Obstacle Visual Identifier Operational Function & Rule Mechanics
Magic Bone Glowing Bone Icon Highlights 1 valid, connectable pair on the board with a bright golden outline
Whistle Shuffle Brass Whistle Icon Scrambles all uncleared tiles on the grid to generate fresh pathing options
Paw Strike Glowing Paw Icon Select any matching pair to destroy them instantly, ignoring path restrictions
Frozen Ice Tile Encased Ice Block Tile cannot be moved or linked until an adjacent match melts the surrounding ice
Wooden Block Solid Timber Cube Impassable obstacle tile; connection lines must route entirely around it

2.6 Game Modes

2.6.1 Valley Journey (Main Campaign)

The primary progression mode featuring over 250 handcrafted levels. Travel across diverse environments with evolving layout shapes, shifting gravity rules, and unique obstacle mechanics.

2.6.2 Sprint Challenge (Timed Mode)

  • Gameplay: A high-speed arcade race against a rapidly running clock!
  • Mechanics: Every successful pair match adds +3 seconds back to the timer. Clear as many pairs as possible before time runs out to set global high scores.

2.6.3 Relaxed Sanctuary (Zen Mode)

  • Gameplay: A completely peaceful, stress-free matching experience with zero timers or move limits!
  • Mechanics: Enjoy unlimited hints, infinite shuffles, and relaxing music while matching cute pets at your own leisure.

2.7 Stage Settlement & Scoring Formula

Final stage performance and paw ratings are calculated upon clearing the final pair of pet tiles:

$$\text{Final Stage Score} = (\text{Base Pairs Cleared} \times 100) + (\text{Time Remaining Seconds} \times 50) + (\text{Max Combo Multiplier} \times 200)$$

  • Flawless Swiftness Bonus: 1,500 Points awarded for clearing a stage without using any hint or shuffle boosters.
  • Paw Rating Thresholds:
    • 1 Paw Badge: Complete the board before the timer expires.
    • 2 Paw Badges: Complete the board with more than $30\%$ of allocated time remaining.
    • 3 Paw Badges: Master the stage rapidly, achieving high combo chains and leaving over $50\%$ time remaining!

2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions

A game session in Pet Link officially concludes upon reaching either of two final outcomes:

  1. Meadow Cleared (Victory Condition): Every tile on the grid is successfully paired and removed. A victorious chime plays, celebratory pet animations fill the screen, paw ratings are awarded, and the next level node unlocks on the map!
  2. Time Expired (Defeat Condition): The timer reaches zero while unmatched tiles remain on the board. The screen softly fades, displaying remaining targets along with options to add extra time using earned stars or restart the level.

The player who reads paths quickly, navigates tricky turns, and clears boards with speed earns the honored title of Grand Guardian of Whispering Paw Valley!
