Viking Tiles
Viking Tiles: Game Description & Official Manual
Part I: Game Description
1.1 Overview and Lore
Welcome to Viking Tiles, an epic, Norse mythology-inspired tile-matching and realm-building puzzle game that transports players to the frostbitten, sea-swept shores of ancient Scandinavia. Set during the golden age of Norse legends, players step into the fur-trimmed boots of Sigurd Raven-Bearer, a legendary Viking chieftain tasked by Odin the All-Father with uniting scattered Nordic tribes, constructing majestic coastal settlements, charting dangerous fjords, and securing a gloriously earned seat in Valhalla.
In Viking Tiles, the fate of your clan is carved directly into sacred wooden and rune-etched stone tiles. Drawing inspiration from classic domino-style map-building, triple-tile matching dynamics, and territorial strategy games, players select, rotate, and lay down multi-patterned terrain tiles to expand their Viking kingdom. Connect sweeping pine forests to hunt wild game, link roaring fjord waters to sail longships, construct fortified mead halls, and align ancient elder runes to invoke the favor of Norse gods like Thor, Freya, and Loki.
Designed for puzzle strategists, tabletop fans, and lovers of Norse mythology, Viking Tiles balances relaxing, meditative spatial planning with rich, tactical territory management. Featuring over 180 handcrafted campaign raids, dynamic weather seasons, dynamic longship trading mechanics, and a soaring orchestral score filled with traditional Nordic drums and tagelharpa strings, Viking Tiles delivers an unforgettable puzzle experience where every laid tile writes a brand-new saga.
1.2 Component Inventory & Chieftain Interface
Whether played via intuitive touchscreen controls on mobile devices or precision point-and-click mechanics on PC, Viking Tiles presents a clean, wooden-carved user interface designed for maximum tactical clarity:
- 1 Central Kingdom Canvas: A grid-less or hexagonal landscape map where players place terrain tiles to expand their settlement from a single longhouse starting hub.
- The Viking Tile Deck: Carved wooden and stone tiles featuring single, double, or triple terrain faces:
- Fjord Waters: Blue tile edges housing longships and fishing nets.
- Pine Forests: Green timber edges home to wild game and timber camps.
- Mountain Peaks: Snow-capped grey edges rich in iron ore and silver deposits.
- Settlement Meadows: Golden-green edges holding longhouses, blacksmiths, and cattle pens.
- Rune Stones: Rare glowing carved edges holding divine blessings from Asgard.
- 1 Active Pouch & Staging Dock: A lower tray holding 3 drawn tiles, allowing players to preview, rotate, and select their next placement.
- 1 Longhouse HUD Bar: An integrated monitoring panel displaying critical real-time clan statistics:
- Clan Population Gauge: Tracks total housing capacity and active villagers.
- Resource Reserves: Measures gathered Timber, Iron, Fish, and Silver.
- Gods' Favor Meter: Fills as rune combinations are completed to trigger divine miracles.
- Raid Map Directive: Displays active level placement goals and remaining tile deck counts.
1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Norse Atmosphere
Viking Tiles immerses players in a beautifully crafted hand-painted Nordic aesthetic designed to evoke Nordic folklore:
- Hand-Carved Visual Art: Tiles feature rich wood-grain textures, polished runic etchings, ambient snowfall particle effects, and subtle animations like smoking longhouse chimneys and waving fjord waves.
- Dynamic Seasonal Weather: As you lay tiles, the landscape dynamically shifts through bright summer sun, golden autumn leaves, and harsh winter blizzards that freeze water edges and test your village's food reserves.
- Authentic Nordic Soundscape: An enchanting musical score composed with authentic medieval instruments—including hardanger fiddles, jaw harps, horn blares, and deep choir chants—complemented by sound effects of crackling campfires, coastal winds, and wooden tiles snapping firmly into place.
1.4 Core Objectives
The primary objective in Viking Tiles is to lay, rotate, and match terrain tiles to expand your clan's territory, construct thriving Viking settlements, fulfill trade routes, and earn enough Glory Points to complete campaign levels before your tile pouch runs empty.
Player performance is evaluated through:
- Territory Completion: Successfully closing off enclosed forests, complete mountain ranges, or contained fjord lakes to earn massive completion bonuses.
- Resource Harvesting: Matching resource-rich tile edges to build up Timber, Fish, and Silver reserves.
- Rune Alignment: Linking matching elder runes to summon divine favors from the Norse gods.
- Saga Glory Rating: Achieving high total points to unlock 3 Gold Shield Badges per territory on the World Map.
Part II: Gameplay Instructions
2.1 Core Mechanics & Placement Laws
Mastering Viking Tiles requires strict adherence to terrain edge matching, rotation physics, and village expansion limits.
Law 1: The Edge-Matching Rule
- When placing a new tile onto the kingdom canvas, all touching edges must match the terrain type of adjacent, existing tiles.
- Legal Example: Placing a tile so its Water edge touches an existing Water edge, and its Forest edge touches an existing Forest edge.
- Illegal Example: Placing a tile with a Mountain edge directly against a Meadow edge = Invalid Placement.
Law 2: Tile Rotation & Placement Mechanics
- Tiles sitting in your active staging tray can be rotated $360^\circ$ (in $60^\circ$ or $90^\circ$ increments depending on grid geometry) prior to placement.
- A tile can only be dropped onto the canvas if at least one of its edges connects legally to a previously placed tile on the board.
Law 3: Territory Closure & Feature Claiming
When a continuous terrain feature is completely encircled or enclosed by other terrain types, it is considered Completed:
- Enclosed Lake: Surrounding a body of water completely with land creates a Fishing Haven, instantly awarding massive glory points and food reserves.
- Dense Timberland: Enclosing a pine forest completely yields a Woodcutter's Bounty, supplying timber for longhouse upgrades.
- Fortified Settlement: Enclosing a village meadow with wooden palisades or mountain walls turns it into a Fortified Stronghold, doubling its population points!
Law 4: The Raven Messenger System
If a player draws a tile that cannot be legally placed anywhere on the active kingdom canvas, they may spend 1 Raven Token to discard the tile to the bottom of the deck and draw a fresh replacement tile.
2.2 Game Setup & Voyage Preparation
- Select Realm Map Node: Open the World Saga Map and choose an unlocked territory (e.g., Chapter III: The Fjords of Valdres).
- Review Conquest Directives: Inspect required goals (e.g., Build 2 Fortified Strongholds, Connect a 6-Tile Fjord Route, and Earn 2,500 Glory Points with 30 Tiles).
- Equip Clan Blessings (Optional): Select active pre-game perks (such as starting with 2 extra Raven Tokens or a pre-placed Rune Stone) using earned Silver Coins.
- Initialize Hub: The central Longhouse starting tile lands on the map. Your tray draws 3 initial tiles from the deck, and the voyage begins!
2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Strategy
Building a legendary kingdom requires balancing short-term tile connections with long-term map planning. Master chieftains rely on four core tactical principles:
Technique 1: Flexible Edge Preservation
Avoid creating "dead zones"—isolated empty spaces surrounded by conflicting terrain edges that are mathematically impossible for any tile in the deck to match! Always keep your placement borders as open and uniform as possible.
Technique 2: Prioritize Multi-Edge Matches
Placing a single tile that simultaneously matches 2, 3, or 4 adjacent edges on the board triggers a Master Builder Combo, awarding exponential bonus glory points and instantly refilling your Gods' Favor meter!
Technique 3: Tactical Rune Clustering
Cluster rune stone tiles together in central locations! Linking 3 glowing rune tiles creates an active Odin's Sight zone, highlighting optimal placement spots across the entire board automatically for the rest of the game.
Technique 4: Longship Fjord Networking
Build long, winding fjord water channels connecting the edge of the map to your central longhouse hub. Fjord routes allow trade longships to enter your village, multiplying all Silver generated by surrounding meadows!
2.4 Structure of an Active Settlement Turn
A standard turn in Viking Tiles flows through a continuous four-phase operational loop:
- Phase 1: Draw & Inspection Phase
- Examine the 3 active tiles resting in your staging tray.
- Inspect open placement borders across your expanding kingdom canvas.
- Phase 2: Rotation & Position Alignment
- Select a tile and rotate its edges to match available terrain openings.
- Drag and preview the tile position on the canvas to check valid edge connections.
- Phase 3: Tile Placement & Scoring Trigger
- Drop the tile onto the map to lock in the placement.
- The engine evaluates edge matches, updates population counts, and checks for completed enclosed territories.
- Phase 4: Favor Check & Refill
- Collect harvested timber, silver, or food reserves.
- Draw a new tile from your remaining deck into your tray to restore your active hand to 3 tiles.
2.5 Terrain & Runic Feature Matrix
Each terrain type provides specific resources, scoring modifiers, and specialized clan buildings:
| Terrain Type | Edge Color / Visual | Primary Resource | Territory Completion Effect | Unique Feature Building |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fjord Waters | Shimmering Deep Blue | Fish / Food | Unlocks trading longships; multiplies silver | Dockyard & Fishing Hut |
| Pine Forests | Dark Evergreen Trees | Timber | Yields wood reserves for village construction | Sawmill & Hunter's Lodge |
| Mountain Peaks | Snow-Capped Granite | Iron Ore & Silver | Protects villages; provides high glory points | Blacksmith & Silver Mine |
| Settlement Meadow | Golden Green Fields | Clan Population | Increases worker capacity for map actions | Great Mead Hall & Farmstead |
| Rune Stones | Glowing Blue/Gold Etchings | Divine Favor | Fills God Meter; summons divine miracles | Temple of Asgard |
2.6 Game Modes
2.6.1 Saga Campaign (Realm Conquest)
The primary storyline across 8 legendary Norse realms (From Midgard Coastlines to Jotunheim Peaks). Features over 180 levels with unique map shapes, weather challenges, and enemy Saxon raids!
2.6.2 Endless Skald Mode (Zen Builder)
- Gameplay: An unhurried, relaxing sandbox experience with an infinite tile deck and no move timers!
- Mechanics: Focus purely on creating sprawling, breathtaking Scandinavian landscapes and massive ancient Viking metropolises at your own pace.
2.6.3 Valhalla Survival Raid
High-stakes competitive puzzle mode! Play against a fast-draining blizzard timer where every successful multi-edge match adds bonus seconds to your clock while wild frost giants freeze open spaces on your board.
2.7 Completion & Glory Scoring Metrics
Upon completing a level or exhausting your tile deck, your final saga score is calculated on the Chieftain's Runestone:
$$\text{Final Glory} = \text{Base Edge Points} + \text{Enclosed Territory Bonuses} + (\text{Resource Reserves} \times 10) + \text{Gods' Favor Bonus}$$
- Standard Edge Match: $+50$ Points per valid matching terrain edge.
- Multi-Edge Master Match: $+200$ Bonus Points for matching 3 or more edges on a single tile drop.
- Completed Feature Bonus: $+500$ to $+2,000$ Points awarded for fully closing off lakes, forests, or mountains.
- Unused Raven Token Reward: $+1,000$ Points per remaining Raven Token at game completion.
- Shield Ratings:
- 1 Bronze Shield: Reached baseline territorial victory threshold.
- 2 Silver Shields: Exceeded score targets by $40\%$ with full resource stockpiles.
- 3 Gold Shields: Flawless conquest with maximum enclosed territories and zero wasted tiles!
2.8 Game End & Saga Victory Conditions
A match of Viking Tiles officially terminates upon reaching either of two absolute final states:
- Territory Directives Fulfilled (Victory): All required settlement goals, resource quotas, and glory score targets are achieved before your tile deck runs dry. Horns blare, stopping the shift and unlocking the next realm on the Saga Map!
- Deck Depletion / Board Lockout (Defeat): You run out of tiles in your deck before reaching level goals, or no legal tile placements remain on the entire canvas and zero Raven Tokens are left to reshuffle.
The chieftain who conquers all 8 realms with 3 Gold Shield Ratings earns the legendary title of High King of the Viking Lands!
2.9 Field Rules & System Integrity
- Placement Validity Indicator: The game canvas automatically highlights valid placement slots in green and invalid slots in red as you drag a tile across the map.
- Undo Protocol: Players can undo their most recent tile drop provided they have not yet drawn a replacement tile from the pouch deck.
- Cross-Device Cloud Sync: Unlocked saga maps, earned chieftain shields, and custom tile-skin collections sync seamlessly across your user account across all supported gaming devices.
