Viking Tiles
Viking Tiles: Game Description & Official Manual
Part I: Game Description
1.1 Overview and Lore
Welcome to Viking Tiles, a tactical spatial-drafting, route-building, and tile-placement board game set against the rugged backdrop of the 9th-century Norse world. Across mist-shrouded fjords, icy seas, dense Scandinavian pine forests, and rich untamed coastlines, players take on the role of rival Viking Jarls vying for eternal glory, land dominance, and the favor of the Norse gods. To earn a place in the halls of Valhalla, each Jarl must expand their clan’s territory, navigate longships through treacherous sea lanes, establish fortified longhouses, build prosperous trading posts, and stage daring coastal raids.
In Viking Tiles, territorial expansion and tactical conquest are achieved through the strategic drafting and placement of heavy, carved wooden terrain tiles onto a shared, dynamically evolving map grid. Rather than relying on simple luck or direct elimination, victory demands spatial foresight, tight resource management, and aggressive territorial control. Every tile laid down alters the geography of the board, opening new sea routes for longship fleets, sealing off mountain borders, or encroaching directly upon rival settlement zones.
Designed for 1 to 4 players, Viking Tiles seamlessly blends classic domino-style edge-matching rules with modern worker-placement, area-control, and engine-building mechanics. Players deploy specialized clan figures—including Shieldmaidens, Berserkers, Longships, and Runesmiths—onto newly placed tiles to claim features, secure trade routes, and invoke the mythological favor of Odin, Thor, and Freya. Featuring rich Norse iconography, tactile wooden components, and deep emergent strategy, Viking Tiles offers a thematic, highly replayable tabletop saga.
1.2 Component Inventory
Every standard edition of Viking Tiles comes fully equipped with a set of Nordic components designed for high durability and immersive tabletop presentation:
- 1 Great Hall Starting Tile: A large, double-sided starting tile depicting the central fjord trade hub where all land expansion begins.
- 120 Carved Wooden Terrain Tiles: Heavy square tiles featuring four distinct terrain features rendered in vibrant artwork:
- Fjord Waters (Navigable sea channels for Longships)
- Pine Forests (Timber supply zones and Berserker sanctuaries)
- Mountain Peaks (Impassable borders rich in iron ore)
- Green Coastlines (Settlement land for Longhouses and Farmland)
- 40 Custom Wooden Clan Figures (Meeple Warriors): 10 painted wooden figures per clan color (Red Raven, Black Wolf, Blue Bear, Yellow Serpent) consisting of:
- 6 Warriors (Standard territory workers)
- 2 Shieldmaidens (Defensive multipliers)
- 1 Berserker (Aggressive area-contesting unit)
- 1 Longship (Naval fleet unit for water routes)
- 16 Carved Wooden Runestones: 4 unique color-coded Runestones per player, used to mark favor on the Divine Track.
- 1 Divine Favor Track: A central ledger measuring Odin's Wisdom, Thor's Might, and Freya's Bounty.
- 1 Cloth Pouch of Destiny: An embroidered velvet drawstring bag used for secret, randomized tile drafting.
- 80 Silver & Gold Hack-Silver Coins: Metallic tokens valued at 1 and 5 Silver, used for trading and raiding payouts.
1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design
Viking Tiles features a dark, authentic Norse aesthetic inspired by historical Viking art styles (Ringerike and Urnes styles). Tiles feature knotwork borders, carved rune inscriptions, and high-contrast terrain features.
To ensure total clarity during complex spatial assessments:
- Edge-Knot Patterns: Every terrain type extending to a tile edge features a continuous, distinct knotwork border line (e.g., rope-like weaves for rivers, iron chains for mountains) that must align seamlessly with adjacent tiles.
- Symbolic Overlay: Every tile features a subtle etched runic symbol in its corner designating resource yields (Wood, Ore, Fish, Gold) to aid quick scanning without cluttering the main artwork.
1.4 Core Objectives
The primary objective in Viking Tiles is to earn the highest total Glory Points (GP) by the time the final terrain tile is placed from the Cloth Pouch of Destiny.
Glory Points are accrued through:
- Feature Completion: Completing closed land features (e.g., surrounding a Forest, sealing a Fjord waterway, or enclosing a Mountain Ring).
- Territory Control: Owning the majority of clan figures within expansive, connected settlements or coastal zones.
- Successful Coastal Raids: Navigating Longships down completed Fjord routes to raid monastery and village tiles.
- Devotion Tracks: Advancing Runestones along the Divine Favor Track through ritual tile placements.
Part II: Gameplay Instructions
2.1 Core Mechanics & Placement Laws
Mastering Viking Tiles requires a firm grasp of spatial tile matching, figure deployment, route completion, and majority scoring.
Law 1: The Principle of Seamless Matching
- Tiles must be placed adjacent to at least one previously laid tile on the central map grid, sharing at least one full edge.
- Edge-Matching Rule: All terrain features (Fjords, Forests, Mountains, Coastlines) touching the edges of the newly placed tile must match seamlessly with the features on all touching adjacent tiles.
- A tile cannot be placed if any of its touching edges create a terrain mismatch (e.g., placing a Mountain edge directly against a Fjord edge).
Law 2: The Unit Claim Protocol
- Immediately after placing a valid tile, a player may deploy exactly one clan figure from their personal supply onto a terrain feature on that newly placed tile.
- Exclusivity Rule: A player cannot deploy a unit onto a terrain feature (Forest, Fjord, Mountain, Settlement) if that feature is already connected to another feature that contains an existing unit (belonging to themselves or a rival).
- Connecting Disjointed Lands: Players may place tiles that later merge two previously separate territories, resulting in multiple units sharing a single large territory.
Law 3: Majority Control & Contested Lands
- When a completed territory contains figures from multiple players, total control is determined by figure strength:
- Standard Warrior / Longship: 1 Point of Control.
- Shieldmaiden: 2 Points of Control (in settlements/forests).
- Berserker: 2 Points of Control (in contested battles) and ignores defensive bonuses.
- The player with the highest total control value earns full Glory Points for the completed feature. In the event of a tie, all tied players receive full points.
Law 4: Feature Completion & Unit Retrieval
- A feature is completed when it is fully enclosed with no open, unattached edges remaining:
- Forests: Fully surrounded by non-forest terrain.
- Fjords: Sea lanes terminated at both ends by landmasses, ports, or open ocean edges.
- Settlements: Fully enclosed within defensive mountain ridges or coastlines.
- Upon completion, the feature is scored immediately. All deployed clan figures on that feature are returned to their respective owners' personal supplies.
2.2 Game Setup
- Establish the Board Center: Place the double-sided Great Hall Starting Tile face-up in the middle of the play table.
- Prepare the Tile Pouch: Place all 120 wooden terrain tiles into the Cloth Pouch of Destiny and mix them thoroughly.
- Distribute Clan Assets: Each player chooses a clan color and receives:
- 10 Wooden Clan Figures of their color.
- 4 Runestones of their color.
- 5 Hack-Silver Coins from the central bank.
- Set Up the Divine Track: Place the Divine Favor Track alongside the board. Players place one Runestone at position 0 on each of the three deity tracks (Odin, Thor, Freya).
- Draw Starting Hand: Each player draws a starting hand of 3 tiles face-secretly from the pouch.
- Determine First Player: The player who most recently wore a braid, carried iron, or sailed on open water takes the First Player Marker (The Raven Horn).
2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Logic
Succeeding in Viking Tiles requires balancing aggressive territorial expansion with careful unit conservation. Master Jarls rely on four core tactical principles:
Technique 1: Stealth Merging
You cannot place a unit directly into a rival's rich, growing settlement. Instead, place a tile with your unit nearby in an isolated empty zone, then place connecting tiles on subsequent turns to bridge the gap and merge your unit into their territory, stealing or splitting their hard-earned points!
Technique 2: Fleet Flanking (Naval Raids)
Deploy your Longship unit onto short, fast-closing Fjord channels. Because water routes close quickly, you can rapidly score Glory Points, collect Hack-Silver, and retrieve your Longship figure back into your supply within 1 to 2 turns for immediate redeployment.
Technique 3: Unit Conservation
Never lock all 10 of your clan figures into massive, sprawling interior lands early in the game! If all your figures are trapped on unfinished features, you will have no figures available to claim new tiles, forfeiting valuable turn actions. Always keep 2 to 3 figures active in your reserve.
Technique 4: Runic Trap Placement
If a rival is building an enormous city or mountain stronghold, place difficult edge-matching tiles adjacent to their open edges (such as a tile requiring three simultaneous Mountain-Fjord connections). This makes it mathematically nearly impossible for them to complete the feature, trapping their units for the rest of the game!
2.4 Structure of an Active Play Turn
A turn in Viking Tiles follows a strict, sequential four-phase structure:
- Phase 1: Tile Placement
- Select 1 terrain tile from your secret hand of 3 tiles.
- Place it face-up on the map grid adhering strictly to the Seamless Matching Rule.
- Replenish your hand back to 3 tiles from the Cloth Pouch.
- Phase 2: Unit Deployment or Ritual Action (Optional)
- Place 1 unit from your supply onto a feature on the just-placed tile, OR
- Pay 2 Hack-Silver coins to perform a Runic Ritual, advancing 1 Runestone on the Divine Favor Track.
- Phase 3: Feature Resolution & Scoring
- Check if the placed tile completed any Forests, Fjords, Mountain Strongholds, or Settlements.
- Calculate majority control, award Glory Points on the score track, and payout Hack-Silver.
- Phase 4: Unit Retrieval
- Return all clan figures standing on newly completed features to their owners' active supplies. Pass turn to the left.
2.5 Feature Scoring & Value Matrix
| Feature Type | Completion Condition | Base Point Value | Unit Type Bonus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pine Forest | Fully enclosed by non-forest edges | 2 GP per tile in forest | +2 GP per Shieldmaiden inside |
| Fjord Waterway | Closed at both ends by land/ports | 1 GP per water tile | +1 Hack-Silver per Longship |
| Settlement | Fully surrounded by walls/mountains | 3 GP per tile in settlement | +3 GP per Berserker inside |
| Mountain Ring | 8 tiles completely surrounding a peak | 9 GP flat bonus | Instantly advances Odin Track +1 |
| Monastery Raid | Fjord path connects Longship to Monastery | 4 GP + 3 Hack-Silver | Longship returns immediately |
2.6 Game Modes
2.6.1 Standard Saga (2 to 4 Players - Classic Mode)
The definitive territorial conquest mode described above, lasting approximately 45 to 60 minutes.
2.6.2 Odin’s Solitaire (1 Player - Campaign Challenge)
- Setup: The player plays against a simulated rival, The Frost Giant Automaton.
- Gameplay: The player draws and plays 1 tile per turn, attempting to build a continuous Scandinavian kingdom while blocking the Automaton's automated tile-flip placements.
- Victory: Achieve 100+ Glory Points before the tile pouch runs out.
2.6.3 Ragnarök Deathmatch (2 Players - Aggressive Duel)
- Setup: Played with a reduced 60-tile deck and double the Berserker units.
- Gameplay: All point values for completed features are doubled, but uncompleted features at the end of the game deduct points directly from your score.
2.7 End-Game Resolution & Final Scoring
When the final tile from the Cloth Pouch of Destiny is drawn and placed, the game moves to The Feast of Valhalla (Final Scoring):
- Incomplete Feature Scoring:
- Incomplete Forests: Award 1 GP per tile (instead of 2 GP).
- Incomplete Settlements: Award 1 GP per tile (instead of 3 GP).
- Incomplete Fjords: Award 1 GP per water tile.
- Divine Favor Payouts:
- Odin’s Track: The player furthest along awards +10 GP; second place awards +5 GP.
- Thor’s Track: Award 2 GP for every Berserker active on the board.
- Freya’s Track: Award 1 GP for every 3 Hack-Silver coins in your personal treasury.
- Tally & Declaration: Add all incomplete feature scores and Divine Favor bonuses to the central score track.
2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions
A game of Viking Tiles officially concludes upon reaching either of two absolute end triggers:
- Empty Destiny Pouch (Standard Trigger): The last tile in the cloth bag is drawn, played, and resolved through the turn phases.
- Board Lock Trigger: A rare state where no legal placement options exist for any player's drawn hand tiles.
The Jarl with the highest total accumulated Glory Points is declared the winner, claims the Great Hall, and leads their clan to everlasting glory as the High King of the North!
2.9 Field Rules & Table Etiquette
- Irreversible Placement: Once a tile is placed and your hand touches a unit or the pouch, the tile's position is permanently locked and cannot be shifted.
- Impossible Tile Exchange: If a player draws a hand containing tiles that cannot mathematically fit anywhere on the active board, they may reveal their hand, discard those tiles to the box, and draw 3 replacement tiles.
- Open Treasury: Hack-Silver coins and current Divine Favor track standings must remain fully visible to all players at all times.
