Tile Stack
Tile Stack: Game Description & Official Rulebook
Part I: Game Description
1.1 Overview and Lore
Welcome to Tile Stack, an engaging, highly addictive tabletop and digital puzzle game of vertical spatial planning, layer management, tactile matching, and strategic depth. Set within the serene visual world of the Grand Artisan Tower, players step into the shoes of Master Mosaic Craftsmen tasked with collecting, stacking, layering, and clearing intricate ceramic tiles to construct flawless architectural monuments.
In Tile Stack, 1 to 4 players interact with a multi-layered, three-dimensional grid platform where square tiles are not merely placed side-by-side, but stacked directly on top of one another to form vertical columns up to four layers high. During each turn, players draw multi-patterned, double-sided tiles from a shared central reserve, assessing both their top-face visual patterns and their structural stack heights. By aligning three or more identical tiles across matching vertical heights or forming full vertical column stacks of identical motifs, players trigger satisfying surface clears and deep structural cascades, stripping away top layers to reveal hidden strategic opportunities beneath.
Combining spatial foresight, color-and-pattern coordination, layer-by-layer memory management, and competitive drafting, Tile Stack transforms classic tile-matching mechanics into a rich, tactile 3D puzzle experience. Will you build tall, precarious stacks to set up massive multi-layer chain reactions, or will you keep your board flat and clear to maintain ultimate strategic flexibility?
1.2 Component Inventory
Every standard edition of Tile Stack includes high-quality, tactile components engineered for smooth stacking, clear visual identification, and long-lasting replayability:
- 1 Central Artisan Staging Platform: A heavy-duty, recessed $5 \times 5$ square grid board featuring 25 individual tile-stacking alignment slots.
- 100 Engraved Ceramic Tiles: Thick, double-sided acrylic tiles featuring five distinct aesthetic motifs and color palettes:
- 20 Azure Wave Tiles (Blue)
- 20 Terra Sunburst Tiles (Orange)
- 20 Jade Blossom Tiles (Green)
- 20 Crimson Lotus Tiles (Red)
- 20 Amethyst Star Tiles (Purple)
- 1 Rotating Tile Carousel (Drafting Pool): A central revolving tray that displays 4 face-up tiles available for player drafting during each round.
- 20 Structural Support Tokens: Wooden tokens used to lock specific low-level layers or elevate tile placements during advanced play modes.
- 1 Score Tracker & Cascade Counter: A perimeter score track used to log base matching points, height multipliers, and multi-layer chain reactions.
- 4 Player Mosaic Dashboards: Personal player boards used to hold reserve tiles, track personal scoring tokens, and display active secret objectives.
- 1 Master Scenario & Blueprint Deck: A collection of 40 pre-designed structural setup cards ranging from Beginner Foundations to Grandmaster Towers.
1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design
Tile Stack features an elegant, tactile aesthetic inspired by classical Mediterranean tilework, traditional Asian ceramics, and modern architectural minimalism. Each tile is heavily weighted with smooth, rounded edges and debossed surface patterns, making vertical stacking stable, seamless, and satisfying to touch. To ensure full accessibility for color-blind and visually impaired players, every color spectrum features a unique, high-contrast geometric relief pattern (e.g., Azure Wave = Rippled Lines, Terra Sunburst = Radiant Rays, Jade Blossom = Petal Curves, Crimson Lotus = Diamond Grids, Amethyst Star = Four-Point Stars).
1.4 Core Objectives
The primary objective in Tile Stack is to achieve the highest total Artisan Prestige Points (APP) by drafting, placing, stacking, and clearing matching tiles across the grid platform. Points are earned through:
- Horizontal Line Matches: Aligning 3 or more identical tile motifs at the exact same vertical layer height across rows or columns.
- Vertical Column Clears (Full Stack Match): Stacking 3 or 4 identical tile motifs directly on top of one another within a single grid slot.
- Cascade Layer Reactions: Triggering secondary surface matches as clearing top tiles exposes lower-layer matching patterns underneath.
- Architectural Blueprint Completion: Fulfilling specific structural height patterns outlined on objective cards.
Part II: Gameplay Instructions
2.1 Core Mechanics & Stacking Rules
To excel at Tile Stack, players must understand both horizontal surface alignment and vertical elevation mechanics.
Rule 1: The Layer Elevation Constraint
The playing surface consists of 25 grid slots ($5 \times 5$ configuration). Tiles can be placed on empty slots or stacked directly on top of existing tiles up to a maximum height limit:
- Maximum Stack Height: A single grid slot may hold a maximum of 4 tiles high.
- Elevation Matching: A horizontal or diagonal line match only counts if all participating tiles sit at the exact same vertical layer level (e.g., all 3 matching tiles must be sitting at Layer Level 2).
Rule 2: Vertical Column Clears (The Tower Purge)
- If a single grid column accumulates 3 identical stacked tiles directly on top of each other, those 3 matching tiles are immediately purged from the board!
- If a player completes a 4-tile vertical stack of identical motifs, it triggers a Master Tower Purge, clearing the entire column and awarding double points plus a free bonus turn!
Rule 3: The Exposed Layer Cascade Rule
When top-layer tiles are removed due to a match or purge:
- The newly exposed top surface tiles beneath them immediately re-evaluate for valid horizontal or vertical matches.
- If new matches are formed, they trigger a Cascade Chain Reaction, earning compounding score multipliers for each successive layer cleared!
2.2 Game Setup
- Set Up the Staging Platform: Place the $5 \times 5$ central board in the center of the playing area within equal reach of all players.
- Prepare the Tile Supply: Shuffle all 100 Engraved Ceramic Tiles thoroughly in the draw bag to form the central tile pool.
- Fill the Drafting Carousel: Draw 4 tiles at random from the bag and place them face-up on the Rotating Tile Carousel.
- Distribute Player Dashboards: Each player takes 1 personal Mosaic Dashboard and places their score marker on space 0 of the perimeter score track.
- Determine Lead Artisan: The player who most recently laid brick, placed a tile, or built a physical tower goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.
2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play
Navigating a multi-layered 3D grid requires balancing surface management with deep structural preparation:
Technique 1: Foundation Laying
In the early game, avoid building high single towers right away. Focus on laying a broad, uniform base layer across multiple adjacent grid slots. A solid, flat foundation makes it far easier to set up high-scoring horizontal line matches at Layer Level 2 and Level 3 later in the match.
Technique 2: The Trap Door Setup (Exposed Cascade Planning)
Deliberately place matching lower-layer tiles beneath non-matching upper-layer "cover tiles." When you subsequently clear the top-layer cover tiles through an adjacent match, the underlying tiles automatically drop into visual alignment, triggering an instant secondary cascade clear!
Technique 3: Denying Draft Options
Keep a close eye on your opponents' Mosaic Dashboards and active tower heights. If a rival player needs a specific Jade Blossom tile to complete a 4-stack Master Tower Purge on their turn, draft that tile from the carousel first—even if you must store it on your reserve board—to block their high-scoring play.
Technique 4: Height Equalization
Use single-tile placements to adjust the vertical height of adjacent columns. By bringing two neighboring stacks up to the exact same elevation, you turn disconnected surface patterns into valid, high-scoring horizontal matches.
2.4 Structure of a Play Session
A complete match of Tile Stack moves through a continuous sequence of player turns consisting of four structured phases:
- Phase 1: Draft Phase (Selecting Tiles)
- Select 1 face-up tile from the central Rotating Tile Carousel, or draw 1 blind tile from the draw bag and add it to your hand.
- Phase 2: Placement & Stacking Phase (Action Phase)
- Place your drafted tile onto any empty slot or on top of an existing stack on the $5 \times 5$ board (respecting the 4-tile maximum height limit).
- Optional: Spend 1 Structural Support Token to elevate your placement or lock a lower layer tile in place.
- Phase 3: Clear & Cascade Evaluation (Resolution Phase)
- Check for valid horizontal matches (3 or more identical motifs at the same layer height) or vertical column purges (3 or 4 identical stacked motifs).
- Remove matched tiles, process cascading drops, and record all points on the score track.
- Phase 4: Carousel Refill & Hand-Off (End Phase)
- Draw 1 new tile from the bag to refill the empty slot on the Rotating Tile Carousel.
- Pass the turn clockwise to the next player.

2.6 Game Modes
2.6.1 Standard Competitive Match (2 to 4 Players)
The core tabletop game. Players draft and stack tiles onto a shared $5 \times 5$ board, competing to build high-scoring lines, trigger multi-layer cascades, and claim blueprint bonuses before the tile bag empties.
2.6.2 Cooperative Monument Expedition (2 to 4 Players)
A fully collaborative team game where all players work together to build a pre-determined 3D architectural pattern shown on a Master Blueprint Card within a fixed number of turns. Players must communicate drafting choices and coordinate vertical stacking heights to fulfill the blueprint without triggering accidental purges!
2.6.3 Solitaire Master Craftsman (1 Player - Solo)
Test your individual spatial planning against the DRAFT CLOCK:
- Play through a fixed 30-tile draw deck on a personal board.
- Maximize your score while attempting to clear at least 15 complete vertical stacks before the supply deck runs out.
2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix
In competitive and solo modes, final standings are calculated based on total accumulated Artisan Prestige Points:
- Horizontal Line Match (3 Tiles): 150 Base Points
- Horizontal Line Match (4 Tiles): 350 Base Points
- Horizontal Line Match (5 Full Row Tiles): 700 Base Points
- Vertical Column Purge (3 Identical Stacked): 200 Points
- Master Tower Purge (4 Identical Stacked): 500 Points + Bonus Extra Turn
- Cascade Multipliers: 2nd Cascade = $2\times$ Points; 3rd Cascade = $3\times$ Points; 4th Cascade = $5\times$ Points!
- Completed Blueprint Objective: +300 Points per fulfilled Blueprint Card.
2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions
A match of Tile Stack concludes immediately when any of the following conditions occur:
- Supply Exhaustion: The central tile draw bag is completely empty AND all face-up tiles on the Rotating Tile Carousel have been drafted and placed.
- Grid Stagnation: All 25 grid slots have reached the maximum 4-tile stack height, preventing any further legal tile placements.
The player with the highest overall score on the Artisan Prestige Track is crowned the Master Mosaic Craftsman!
Tie-Breakers
If two or more players tie for total prestige points, resolve the tie using the following sequence:
- The player who executed the highest single Cascade Chain Reaction.
- The player who achieved the most Master Tower Purges (4-Stacks).
- The player with the fewest unplaced tiles remaining in their personal dashboard storage.
2.9 Rule Clarifications & Player Etiquette
- Irreversible Placement: Once a drafted tile is placed on top of a stack and released from your hand, its placement is final and cannot be moved or recalled without using a specialized power-up card.
- Strict Height Measuring: Players may freely view and measure the height of any stack on the board at any time, but lower-layer tiles locked inside a stack may not be pulled out or inspected unless revealed by a top-layer clear.
- Simultaneous Multi-Line Clears: If a single tile placement simultaneously completes a vertical stack purge and a horizontal surface line, the vertical stack purge resolves first, followed by the horizontal line re-evaluation.
