Picture Pie - Ancient City: Game Description & Official Rulebook

Part I: Game Description

1.1 Overview and Lore

Welcome to Picture Pie - Ancient City, a captivating, artfully designed spatial-puzzle and city-building game inspired by geometric fraction art, classical mosaic architecture, and ancient urban planning. Set within the sun-drenched valleys of the Cradle of Antiquity, players assume the roles of Master Builders, Architects, and Urban Planners tasked with constructing the legendary city of Aurelia.

In Picture Pie - Ancient City, majestic amphitheaters, towering aqueducts, lush hanging gardens, and grand marble pantheons are built not from rectangular bricks, but from colorful circular "pie" tiles divided into distinct fractional wedges (halves, quarters, eighths, and sixteenths). Players draft these fractional mosaic pieces from a central rotating Quarry Wheel, fitting them together on their personal City Foundation Grids to complete circular architectural monuments, align marble roads, construct symmetrical district plazas, and harmonize urban motifs.

Designed for 1 to 4 players, Picture Pie - Ancient City bridges elegant mathematical beauty with deep, satisfying tile-placement strategy. Whether engaging in a relaxing solo campaign to reconstruct historical wonder blueprints or battling competing architects to draft rare lapis-lazuli fractional wedges, players must balance spatial geometry, fraction management, and district scoring objectives. With its tactile wooden-finish tiles, vibrant terracotta and marble visual palette, and rich scoring variability, Picture Pie - Ancient City transforms geometric fraction assembly into an unforgettable tabletop experience.

1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design

Picture Pie - Ancient City features an exquisite classical Mediterranean mosaic aesthetic. Warm terracotta tones, pristine white marble patterns, and rich lapis hues give every completed foundation board the appearance of a floor mosaic from an ancient palace. To ensure 100% color-blind accessibility and rapid scanning, every fractional tile features distinct geometric border iconography along its arc edge (Marble = Laurel Wreath, Terracotta = Brick Pattern, Water = Wave Lines, Flora = Leaf Vines, Royal Lapis = Crown Symbols) alongside clear fractional fraction stamps ($1/2$, $1/4$, $1/8$) on the underside.

1.4 Core Objectives

The primary objective in Picture Pie - Ancient City is to draft fractional pie pieces from the Quarry Wheel, place them into the 12 circular Monument Sites on your City Foundation Board, and assemble complete $360^\circ$ circular structures that match high-scoring architectural patterns, align continuous road and water networks, and fulfill civic blueprint objectives.

Points are evaluated through:

  1. Completed Monument Circles: Finishing full $360^\circ$ circular plazas using matching or complementary fractional pieces.
  2. Motif Symmetry & Purity: Assembling monuments using single-color motifs or exact symmetrical color patterns.
  3. Infrastructure Alignment: Connecting aqueduct channels and marble roads seamlessly between adjacent circular sites.
  4. Civic Blueprint Accomplishments: Fulfilling secret and shared urban design goals set by the Senate at the start of the game.

Part II: Gameplay Instructions

2.1 Core Mechanics & Spatial Laws

Mastering Picture Pie - Ancient City requires a complete understanding of fraction summation, spatial rotation, quarry drafting rules, and placement mechanics.

Law 1: The Law of Fractional Summation (Completing a Circle)

  • Each of the 12 circular Monument Sites on your City Foundation Board requires a total fractional sum of 1 Whole ($1$) to complete its construction ($360^\circ$).
  • Players may fill a site using any combination of fractional pie tiles, provided the total sum does not exceed $1$:
    • $\text{1 Half } (1/2) + \text{1 Half } (1/2) = 1$
    • $\text{1 Half } (1/2) + \text{2 Quarters } (1/4) = 1$
    • $\text{1 Half } (1/2) + \text{1 Quarter } (1/4) + \text{2 Eighths } (1/8) = 1$
    • $\text{4 Quarters } (1/4) = 1$
    • $\text{8 Eighths } (1/8) = 1$
  • Over-Allocation Penalty: You can never place a fractional piece into a site if its fraction size exceeds the remaining open space in that circle.

Law 2: The Placement & Rotation Law

  • When placing a fractional tile into a Monument Site, the tile must be aligned neatly against the site’s outer border or flush against an existing wedge in that circle.
  • Once placed in a site, a tile may be rotated freely at any point during your turn to align roads, aqueducts, or color patterns with neighboring sites.
  • Construction Lock: Once a Monument Site reaches a full sum of $1$ ($360^\circ$), it is officially completed. Tiles within a completed monument are locked in place and can no longer be rotated or moved for the remainder of the game.

Law 3: The Quarry Draft Mechanics

  • Drafting takes place from the central rotating Stone Quarry Wheel.
  • On their turn, a player may either:
    1. Draft One Large Piece: Take 1 Half ($1/2$) tile from any open Quarry sector.
    2. Draft Two Medium/Small Pieces: Take any combination of 2 Quarters ($1/4$) or Eighths ($1/8$) from the active sector facing the Sundial Marker.
  • If a player cannot or chooses not to place a drafted tile onto their Foundation Board, the piece must be placed into their personal Masonry Storage Yard (which holds a maximum of 3 unplaced tiles).

Law 4: Aqueduct & Road Continuity Physics

  • Certain fractional tiles feature blue aqueduct channels or white marble road segments running along their edges.
  • When two adjacent completed Monument Sites feature matching road or aqueduct lines that touch along their meeting borders, they form a Connected Infrastructure Link, unlocking instant bonus Laurel Wreath points.

2.2 Game Setup

  1. Set Up the Quarry Wheel: Place the central Stone Quarry Wheel in the middle of the play area. Fill the six drafting sectors with random fractional pie tiles drawn from the tile supply bag.
  2. Distribute Foundation Boards: Hand each player a dual-sided City Foundation Board and set their Masonry Storage Yard marker to zero.
  3. Position the Sundial: Place the brass Sundial Marker pointing at Sector 1 of the Quarry Wheel.
  4. Draw Civic Blueprints: Shuffle the Civic Blueprint Deck. Deal 2 private Blueprint Cards to each player and display 3 public Senate Blueprint Cards face-up near the Quarry.
  5. Distribute Starting Tiles: Each player drafts 1 Quarter ($1/4$) tile and 2 Eighth ($1/8$) tiles of their choice from the central supply to initialize their Masonry Yard.
  6. Determine Lead Architect: The player who most recently visited a historic monument or museum takes the Sundial Marker and goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.

2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play

Succeeding in Picture Pie - Ancient City requires fractional planning, rotation awareness, and strategic drafting. Master builders rely on four core tactical principles:

Technique 1: Eighth-Wedge Flexibility Preservation

Do not fill your Masonry Storage Yard with large $1/2$ tiles early on! Keep small $1/8$ wedges in reserve. These tiny fractions act as precision gap-fillers to complete tricky $7/8$ circles late in the game.

Technique 2: Motif Purity Focus

Building a monument using four $1/4$ pieces of different colors awards minimal points. Strive for Pure Monuments (all wedges matching a single motif, such as pure Imperial Marble) to triple your site completion score.

Technique 3: Infrastructure Highway Planning

Pay close attention to the outer edge icons on your tiles! Position your roads and aqueduct channels so they point toward empty adjacent sites. When you eventually build those neighboring sites, the roads will auto-connect for massive link bonuses.

Technique 4: Strategic Quarry Rotation

When taking pieces from the Quarry Wheel, observe what fractions your opponents desperately need to finish their high-scoring monuments. Rotate the Quarry Wheel on your turn to push those needed pieces out of their immediate drafting sector!

2.4 Structure of a Play Session

A standard turn in Picture Pie - Ancient City progresses through four structured phases:

  1. Phase 1: Quarry Selection & Tile Drafting
    • Inspect the Quarry Wheel sectors.
    • Execute a draft action: claim either 1 Half ($1/2$) tile from any sector OR 2 smaller tiles ($1/4$ or $1/8$) from the sector indicated by the Sundial Marker.
  2. Phase 2: Foundation Placement & Spatial Rotation
    • Place drafted tiles directly into uncompleted Monument Sites on your Foundation Board, or store them in your Masonry Yard (max 3 tiles).
    • Rotate tiles within uncompleted sites to optimize road, aqueduct, or pattern alignments.
  3. Phase 3: Monument Completion & Bonus Evaluation
    • Check if any Monument Site has reached a total fractional sum of $1$ ($360^\circ$).
    • If completed, declare the monument finished, score its base completion and motif purity points, and check for connected infrastructure links with adjacent sites.
  4. Phase 4: Quarry Refill & Sundial Advance
    • If the active Quarry sector is empty, refill it from the supply bag.
    • Advance the Sundial Marker clockwise to the next sector and pass play to the next player.

2.5 Tile Motif & Point Scoring Matrix

Motif Name & Color Dominant Architectural Feature Base Completed Circle Value Pure Motif Bonus (1 Color) Infrastructure Effect
Imperial Marble (White) Civic Temples & Forums 200 Points $+300$ Bonus Points Connects Marble Road links
Terracotta Clay (Red) Residential & Artisan Markets 150 Points $+200$ Bonus Points Doubles adjacent district value
Aqueduct Water (Blue) Public Baths & Canals 250 Points $+400$ Bonus Points Connects Water Aqueduct links
Hanging Flora (Green) Botanical Gardens & Groves 150 Points $+250$ Bonus Points Grants $+100$ per adjacent garden
Royal Lapis (Purple) Palaces & Triumphal Arches 400 Points $+600$ Bonus Points Unlocks Imperial Laurel Tokens

2.6 Game Modes

2.6.1 Master Architect Campaign (1 to 4 Players - Standard Competitive)

Players compete over 12 full rounds to build out their $3×4$ City Foundation Boards. The architect who scores the most Laurel Wreath points through completed monuments, infrastructure links, and blueprint cards wins the game.

2.6.2 Senate Wonder Duel (2 Players - High-Stakes Draft)

  • Setup: Played with a shared central foundation grid representing the imperial capital.
  • Gameplay: Players draft tiles from a restricted Quarry to construct monuments on a contested central board, competing to control majority districts and claim high-value monument sites before their rival.
  • Victory: The player who controls the majority of completed monuments on the capital grid wins!

2.6.3 Architect’s Solitaire Codex (1 Player - Solo Blueprint Challenge)

  • Gameplay: A single player attempts to reconstruct 30 legendary historical cities (e.g., The Solstice Capital or The Mosaic Haven) using fixed tile draws, striving to achieve 3-star perfection scores within strict turn limits.

2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix

At the end of the game, scores are calculated on the Imperial Builder Ledger:

  • Completed Monument Score: Sum of all base completion points earned from finished $360^\circ$ sites.
  • Motif Purity Multipliers: Bonus points added for single-color or dual-color symmetrical monuments as detailed in the Scoring Matrix.
  • Connected Infrastructure Bonus: $+100$ Points for every seamlessly connected Road or Aqueduct link between adjacent monuments.
  • Civic Blueprint Payouts: Points awarded for fulfilling private and public Senate Blueprint Cards.
  • Masonry Yard Penalty: Subtract 100 Points for every unplaced tile remaining in your Masonry Storage Yard at game end.

2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions

A game of Picture Pie - Ancient City officially concludes upon reaching any of the following resolution triggers:

  1. Full Foundation Completion: Any player completes all 12 Monument Sites on their City Foundation Board.
  2. Quarry Exhaustion: The central tile bag is completely empty and no further tiles can be refilled onto the Quarry Wheel.
  3. Campaign Round Limit: The 12th round concludes in a standard competitive match.

The player who accumulates the highest total score in Laurel Wreath points is officially crowned Grand Architect of Aurelia!

2.9 Rule Clarifications & City Etiquette

  • Fraction Precision: A tile cannot be placed if it overlaps an existing tile in a Monument Site; fractions must fit cleanly within the $360^\circ$ circle boundaries.
  • Touch and Placement Rule: Once a player places a drafted tile into a Monument Site and ends their turn, the tile cannot be moved to a different site, though it may still be rotated within that same site until the monument is completed.
  • Open Masonry Yards: All tiles stored in a player's Masonry Storage Yard must remain fully visible to all opponents throughout the match.
