Mindful Mahjong
Guardian Lighthouse: Game Description & Official Rulebook
Part I: Game Description
1.1 Overview and Lore
Welcome to Guardian Lighthouse, a tense, atmospheric strategy and resource-management survival game set atop the jagged reefs of Storm Point. Perched on the edge of a treacherous coastal rock face, the Guardian Lighthouse stands as the sole beacon of hope for navigating mariners facing brutal ocean gales, thick coastal fogs, and unpredictable tidal currents. Players step into the oilskin coats of Lighthouse Keepers tasked with maintaining the light, managing fuel supplies, repairing structural damage, signaling endangered vessels, and braving raging storms to prevent catastrophic shipwrecks.
Unlike static resource games, Guardian Lighthouse features a dynamic, evolving weather engine, fluctuating tidal cycles, multi-system lighthouse maintenance, visual signaling mechanics, and high-stakes survival management. Every night brings new challenges—from roaring squalls that crack the lantern lenses and sea fog that muffles foghorns, to sudden mechanical breakdowns in the clockwork rotational gears and desperate distress calls from lost ships battling the waves.
Designed for 1 to 4 players, Guardian Lighthouse delivers a rich blend of cooperative tactical planning, resource conservation, spatial maintenance, and intense survival decision-making. Whether played as a solo strategic campaign testing your endurance against a 30-day winter storm season, or a cooperative team effort where players split duties between the lamp room, fuel cellar, and observation deck, Guardian Lighthouse offers a deeply compelling and satisfying experience of maritime stewardship.

1.4 Core Objectives
The primary objective in Guardian Lighthouse is to keep the lighthouse fully operational through an assigned duration (e.g., a 7-day storm or a 30-day campaign), successfully guiding all incoming vessels safely past the reefs to achieve the highest possible Maritime Safety Score.
Points and victory metrics are awarded through:
- Safe Vessel Navigations: Successfully guiding ships across the ocean track without hull collisions.
- Lighthouse Integrity: Maintaining high structural condition ratings for the lens, clockwork motor, and tower walls.
- Resource Efficiency Bonuses: Ending scenario cycles with healthy reserves of fuel, tools, and supplies.
- Heroic Coastal Rescues: Deploying lifeboats during peak storms to rescue crews from stranded vessels.
Part II: Gameplay Instructions
2.1 Core Mechanics & Maritime Laws
Mastering Guardian Lighthouse requires balancing preventative maintenance, fuel conservation, weather prediction, and emergency response priorities.
Law 1: The Principle of Continuous Illumination
- The Lighthouse Beam must be lit and rotating during every Night Phase.
- If the lamp flickers or goes dark during Night Phase: Incoming vessels cannot calculate their distance to the reef. Ships on the Ocean Track advance rapidly and risk running aground on the rocks!
- Keeping the light burning requires consuming 1 Unit of Lamp Oil/Fuel per watch turn and ensuring the Clockwork Gears remain wound.
Law 2: Foghorn & Sound Signaling Dynamics
- When coastal weather conditions register Thick Fog or Zero Visibility, the optic beam's effective range drops by half.
- Players must spend extra steam or diesel energy to sound the Compressed Air Foghorn. Foghorn blasts alert close-range vessels, holding them in safe waters until visibility improves.
Law 3: Mechanical Wear and Structural Damage
- Harsh ocean weather causes continuous wear and tear on the tower. High winds strain the rotating gear assemblies, while sea spray and flying debris can crack the lantern room glass.
- If a component's integrity drops to zero ($0$), that system fails entirely (e.g., gear failure stops beam rotation; glass breakage allows wind to blow out the burner flame).
Law 4: Keeper Stamina and Exposure
- Keepers possess limited Stamina Points. Performing heavy repairs, hauling fuel up five flights of stairs, or working out on the freezing Storm Deck drains stamina.
- If a Keeper's stamina is completely exhausted, that player becomes Incapacitated for one full turn cycle to recover in the Living Quarters.
2.2 Game Setup
- Assemble the Lighthouse Board: Place the multi-level vertical Lighthouse Tower Board and Oceanic Horizon Track in the center of the play area.
- Initialize Lighthouse Condition: Set condition markers for the Prismatic Lens, Clockwork Motor, Tower Hull, and Foghorn to maximum ($100\%$).
- Stock Supply Vaults: Place 10 Lamp Oil tokens, 5 Mechanical Tool sets, 5 Lens Glass panels, and 5 Ration tokens in the Oil Storage Vault.
- Position Ships & Weather: Set the Weather & Tide Wheel to "Moderate Swell / Clear Skies." Place 3 initial Vessel Miniatures at the outer edge of the Oceanic Horizon Track.
- Distribute Keeper Consoles: Give each player a Keeper Character Dashboard, set stamina markers to $10$, and assign starting personal tools.
- Determine Head Keeper: The player who most recently visited a coastal region, saw a lighthouse, or sailed on a boat takes the first turn. Play proceeds clockwise.
2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play
Succeeding in Guardian Lighthouse requires disciplined time management and clear team coordination. Master Keepers rely on four primary tactical principles:
Technique 1: Daylight Supply & Prep Efficiency
Never wait until nightfall to perform repairs! Utilize the daytime hours to haul fuel up to the Lantern Room, wind the clockwork mechanics, and fix minor glass fractures before the storm hits.
Technique 2: Priority Signal Routing
Focus your signaling efforts on fast-moving ships closest to the inner reef line! Heavy cargo freighters take longer to change course, while fast cutters can maneuver quickly once alerted by the light.
Technique 3: Fuel Conservation Management
During clear, moonlit nights, adjust burner wick settings to conserve fuel. Save your high-intensity oil reserves for nights with dense fog or heavy rain squalls when maximum beam penetration is required.
Technique 4: Delegated Room Stationing
Divide and conquer! Assign one Keeper to watch duty in the Lantern Room, another to mechanical maintenance in the Gear and Generator rooms, and a third to shoreline monitoring and communications.
2.4 Structure of a Play Session
A standard round (one 24-hour day cycle) in Guardian Lighthouse progresses through four structured, sequential phases:
- Phase 1: Dawn Weather & Horizon Report
- Rotate the Weather & Tide Wheel to determine wind speed, sea state, and visibility for the coming day.
- Spawn new Vessel Miniatures on the outer rim of the Oceanic Horizon Track according to the scenario deck.
- Phase 2: Day Watch (Maintenance & Supply Phase)
- Each Keeper receives 3 Action Points to perform tasks:
- Haul Fuel: Move oil canisters up to the Lantern Room.
- Repair Systems: Fix damaged lenses, gears, or tower masonry.
- Wind Motor: Restore the clockwork rotation drive.
- Rest & Fuel Up: Regain lost stamina points.
- Each Keeper receives 3 Action Points to perform tasks:
- Phase 3: Night Watch (Light & Signal Operations)
- Ignite the main burner and engage the rotating mechanism. Consume 1 Fuel token.
- Operate the light beam and sound foghorns to guide active ships on the Horizon Track along safe navigation corridors.
- Resolve random night hazard events (e.g., lens shatter, engine pressure buildup, distress flares).
- Phase 4: Ship Navigation & Vessel Audit
- Advance all ships on the Horizon Track according to current weather speed modifiers and signal status.
- Verify that all ships within the reef zone were safely guided. Record score points for safe passes, or log reef strike penalties for collisions.
2.5 System Maintenance & Vessel Scoring Matrix
| Lighthouse System / Event | Operational Requirement | Failure Penalty | Point Award Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prismatic Lens Assembly | Clean glass; no cracks | Beam range reduced by $50\%$ | $+200$ Points per Safe Watch |

- Station Condition Bonus: $+100$ Points for every lighthouse system maintained above $80\%$ structural condition.
- Resource Reserve Bonus: $+50$ Points for each unused Fuel and Tool token remaining in the Oil Vault.
- Reef Strike Penalty: Subtract 500 Points for every ship lost to reef collisions during the game.
2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions
A game of Guardian Lighthouse officially concludes upon reaching any of the following resolution triggers:
- Season Completion (Victory): The lighthouse crew successfully survives the designated number of days/rounds with the beacon lit and operational.
- Catastrophic Reef Overload (Defeat): 3 or more vessels strike the reefs due to unlit lamps or unmaintained signals.
- Lighthouse Abandonment (Defeat): All Keepers become simultaneously incapacitated due to stamina exhaustion or severe exposure.
The player or team with the highest overall Maritime Safety Score is officially awarded the Master Guardian Service Ribbon of Storm Point!
2.9 Rule Clarifications & Station Etiquette
- Strict Order of Movement: During the Night Phase, beam placement must be declared and locked on the Horizon Track before ship movement dice are rolled.
- Fuel Commitment: Once fuel is added to the burner reservoir, it is consumed during the Night Phase and cannot be returned to storage.
- Cooperative Communication: In team modes, Keepers may freely trade tools and items, provided both Keepers occupy the same room floor on the Lighthouse Board.
