Medieval Defense: Game Description & Official Manual

Part I: Game Description

1.1 Overview and Lore

Welcome to Medieval Defense, an epic tactical tower defense and fortress management experience set within the storm-swept valleys of the Iron Marches. Players step into the boots of the Lord Commander, charged with defending the realm's last standing stronghold—Fortress Eldoria—against relentless waves of invading siege engines, armored shock troops, mythical beasts, and dark warlords.

Medieval Defense combines classical lane-defense strategy with deep, real-time resource allocation, modular wall fortifications, and hero unit micro-management. Rather than relying solely on automated turrets, players must actively manage a living garrison of medieval combatants. Train crossbowmen to garrison stone battlements, position heavy trebuchets to rain fire on enemy battering rams, deploy elite knights to sally forth and block narrow chokepoints, and channel holy spells through consecrated shrines to turn the tide of battle.

Designed for both tactical solo campaigns and intense cooperative defense modes, Medieval Defense balances grand strategic planning with tense moment-to-moment combat decisions. Across 40 hand-crafted story campaigns—spanning muddy river crossings, snowbound mountain passes, and burning castle courtyards—players must balance economy, upgrade paths, and tactical positioning to ensure the realm does not fall into darkness.

1.2 Component Inventory

Every standard physical or digital edition of Medieval Defense includes a complete inventory of tactical assets, units, and structural components:

  • 1 Tactical Battlefield Board: A modular grid featuring customizable terrain, river channels, elevation tiers, and the central Fortress Keep.
  • 1 Fortress Keep & Wall System: Modular stone wall segments, gatehouses, and watchtower foundations capable of receiving upgrades and structural repairs.
  • 60 Defense Structure Figures/Cards:
    • 15 Archer Towers & Crossbow Nest Attachments (Rapid single-target physical damage)
    • 15 Guard Barracks & Garrison Posts (Spawns melee infantry to block pathways)
    • 10 Catapult & Trebuchet Platforms (Long-range area-of-effect damage)
    • 10 Mage Spire & Alchemical Turrets (Elemental armor-shredding magic)
    • 10 Holy Shrines & Consecrated Banners (Aura buffs and area healing)
  • 80 Invader Force Units: Detailed enemy figures/tokens spanning 4 distinct faction archetypes:
    • Goblin Raiders & Scout Cavalry (High speed, low health)
    • Orc Berserkers & Heavy Infantry (High health, physical armor)
    • Siege Towers & Battering Rams (Immune to crowd control, targets structures directly)
    • Shadow Drake Wyverns & Flying Harpies (Bypasses ground melee blocks)
  • 4 Champion Hero Miniatures: Commander figures with unique skill trees (Paladin, Arcane Mage, Ranger Captain, Siege Engineer).
  • 1 Resource Tracker Ledger: Dual-dial display tracking Gold (earned from kills) and Masonry Supplies (earned per wave).
  • 1 Command Deck & Rulebook: 50 Strategic Command Cards and the complete scenario guide.

1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design

Medieval Defense features a gritty, hand-painted gothic medieval visual style. Weathered stone walls, iron-reinforced oak gates, glowing magic runes, and banners snapping in the wind create an immersive battlefield atmosphere. To ensure total visual clarity during chaotic battles, all unit classes feature distinct silhouette profiles and color-coded base rings (Yellow = Ranged, Blue = Melee Infantry, Purple = Magic, Red = Siege Artillery, Green = Support/Holy).

1.4 Core Objectives

The primary objective in Medieval Defense is to build, upgrade, and command defensive structures and field units to eliminate all invading enemy waves before they break through the Fortress Gatehouse and reduce the Keep's Health to zero.

Performance and victory are evaluated through:

  1. Keep Integrity Preservation: Retaining maximum structural health on the central Keep by the end of the final wave.
  2. Resource Efficiency: Clearing waves with minimal masonry damage and high gold efficiency.
  3. Warlord Execution: Successfully defeating the massive boss units that champion the final wave of each scenario.
  4. Flawless Victory (3-Star Crown): Completing a level without allowing a single enemy unit to cross the outer perimeter gates.

Part II: Gameplay Instructions

2.1 Core Mechanics & Tactical Laws

Mastering Medieval Defense requires a complete understanding of pathing control, armor interaction, garrison blocking, and cooldown management.

Law 1: The Principle of Chokepoint Blocking (Melee Engagement)

  • Unlike flying or siege units, ground infantry cannot pass through tiles occupied by allied melee units (Guard Barracks soldiers or Champions).
  • When an enemy collides with a allied melee unit, both units enter Engaged Combat, halting the enemy's forward movement until the melee unit dies or the enemy is slain.
  • Tactical Synergies: Place Guard Barracks directly in front of Archer Towers or Area-of-Effect Catapults to cluster enemies into high-damage kill zones!

Law 2: Armor & Damage Type Interactions

Damage calculation follows strict elemental and physical armor rules:

  • Physical Piercing Damage (Archers/Crossbows): Highly effective against unarmored raiders and flying units; heavily mitigated by heavy plate armor.
  • Blunt Impact Damage (Catapults/Maces): Destroys siege engines and shatters heavy shields; slow attack velocity.
  • Arcane Magic Damage (Mage Spires): Completely bypasses physical armor; deals reduced damage to magic-resistant demons.
  • Holy Flame Damage (Paladins/Shrines): Deals bonus burn damage over time and slows undead and shadow forces.

Law 3: Structural Repair & Wall Fortification

  • Structures and wall segments damaged by enemy siege engines do not automatically regenerate between waves.
  • Players must spend Masonry Supplies during the Preparation Phase to repair damaged battlements or reinforce existing towers with iron cladding.

Law 4: Champion Hero Micro-Management

  • Champion units are not fixed to static bases; they can move freely across any open land tile on the board in real time.
  • Champions possess active abilities (e.g., Shield Wall, Meteor Strike, Volley of Arrows) bound to cooldown timers. Using these abilities at critical moments can stabilize a collapsing defensive line.

2.2 Game Setup

  1. Select Scenario Blueprint: Choose a campaign stage from the Scenario Guide and set up the Tactical Board layout accordingly.
  2. Construct the Keep: Place the central Keep and outer Wall segments onto their designated starting slots on the board. Set the Keep Health Tracker to 100%.
  3. Position Starting Gold & Masonry: Set your Resource Ledger to the scenario's starting funds (typically 500 Gold and 200 Masonry Supplies).
  4. Select Champion: Choose 1 Champion Hero, place their miniature at the Fortress Gatehouse, and take their corresponding Ability Dashboard.
  5. Build Initial Defenses: During the initial Build Phase, spend starting resources to construct base towers on open foundation tiles.
  6. Initialize Invader Deck: Shuffle the scenario's Wave Deck and place it face-down near the board's invasion spawn points.

2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play

Succeeding in Medieval Defense requires strategic resource balancing and adaptive counter-building. Master commanders rely on four core strategies:

Technique 1: The Funnel of Death (Path Manipulation)

Use barricades and Guard Barracks to force multiple enemy paths into a single narrow corridor. Overlap this single corridor with the range circles of splash-damage Catapults and slows from Mage Spires.

Technique 2: Priority Target Targeting

Set your high-damage Archer Towers to "Target Strongest" or "Target Fast" depending on the wave composition. Never waste heavy artillery shells on low-health scouts when massive Battering Rams are approaching the gate.

Technique 3: Active Champion Interception

Do not leave your Champion sitting passively behind the walls! Send high-mobility Champions out to intercept high-threat units (like Goblin Squealers or Explosive Sapper Carts) far away from your primary wall structures.

Technique 4: Economic Snowballing

Construct Tax Collector Posts or Market Tents near your Keep during early, easy waves. These economic structures generate extra Gold per wave, giving you the massive budget needed to afford Tier IV Citadel Towers during the late game.

2.4 Structure of a Play Session

A full stage in Medieval Defense is played across a series of structured Wave Cycles, each divided into three distinct phases:

  1. Phase 1: Strategic Preparation Phase (Build & Repair)
    • Inspect the incoming Wave Indicator to preview the types and numbers of enemies approaching.
    • Spend Gold to build new towers, upgrade existing structures to higher tiers, or hire additional garrison troops.
    • Spend Masonry Supplies to repair damaged walls and gates.
    • Reposition your Champion Hero to the optimal defensive zone.
  2. Phase 2: Combat Engagement Phase (Real-Time Action)
    • Trigger the Wave Horn to initiate the enemy assault.
    • Enemies march along marked pathways toward the Keep. Towers automatically target and fire upon enemies within their operational range.
    • Activate Champion special abilities, trigger manual wall traps (e.g., boiling oil pourers), and re-route infantry garrisons as needed.
    • Earn instant Gold bounties for every enemy unit defeated on the field.
  3. Phase 3: Wave Resolution & Cleanup Phase
    • Once all enemy units in the wave are defeated (or reach the Keep), combat pauses.
    • Deduct health from the Keep for any enemy units that successfully breached the core gates.
    • Collect end-of-wave Masonry income, reset Champion ability cooldowns, and advance the Wave Marker to begin the next cycle.

2.5 Defense Structure & Upgrade Specification Matrix

Structure Class Attack Type & Target Base Cost Upgrade Tier II Feature Ultimate Tier IV Mastery
Watchtower Piercing Single-Target (Air/Ground) 100 Gold Longbow Range Extension Arbalest Nest: Armor-piercing bolts
Guard Barracks Spawns 3 Melee Infantry (Ground) 125 Gold Shieldman Armor Buff Paladin Order: Radiant area healing

2.6 Game Modes

2.6.1 Grand Campaign (Solo / Co-Op Story)

A progressive 40-level narrative campaign where players unlock new tower blueprints, champion talent trees, and lore entries while defending the kingdom from the Northern Horde.

2.6.2 Endless Siege (Survival High-Score Mode)

  • Setup: Played with unlimited resource scaling on a giant, multi-lane fortress map.
  • Gameplay: Wave after wave of increasingly powerful, randomized enemy armies assault the walls with no upper limit.
  • Goal: Survive as many waves as possible to claim a spot on the global Leaderboard of Champions.

2.6.3 Warlord Duel (2-Player Competitive Head-to-Head)

  • Setup: Two players control opposing castles on a split map.
  • Gameplay: Gold earned from defending your own wall is spent sending custom enemy waves directly into your rival's lane!
  • Victory: The player who breaks their opponent's Keep first wins the duel.

2.7 End-Game Resolution & Scoring Metrics

At the conclusion of a scenario, performance is tallied on the Lord Commander’s Roll of Honor:

  • Keep Health Remaining: $+50$ Points per $1\%$ remaining Keep structural integrity.
  • Gold Reserve Bonus: $+1$ Point for every 10 unspent Gold remaining in the vault.
  • Wave Speed Multiplier: Bonus points awarded for triggering enemy waves early using the Rush Horn button.
  • Zero Breaches Bonus: $+1,000$ Points if no enemy unit touched the inner gatehouse throughout the entire match.

2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions

A game of Medieval Defense officially concludes upon reaching one of two absolute triggers:

  1. Total Realm Salvation (Victory): All invading waves listed in the scenario deck—including the final Boss Warlord—are completely destroyed. The Fortress stands tall, and the scenario is marked complete with a 1, 2, or 3-Star rating!
  2. Fortress Collapse (Defeat): Invading forces reduce the central Keep's Health to zero. The gates are smashed open, the fortress falls, and the campaign stage must be restarted.

The commander who clears all campaign stages on Nightmare difficulty earns the legendary title of Grand Marshal of the Iron Marches!

2.9 Field Etiquette & Operational Rules

  • Placement Boundaries: Towers can only be constructed on designated build pads or valid open land tiles that do not completely block the primary pathing route of ground forces.
  • Boiling Oil Cooldown: Gatehouse oil cauldrons may only be poured once per wave and require a full preparation phase to refill.
  • No Active Dismantling Mid-Combat: Towers may only be sold or converted during the Strategic Preparation Phase; dismantling structures mid-wave is strictly forbidden.
