Tri Puzzle: Game Description & Official Rulebook
Part I: Game Description
1.1 Overview and Lore
Welcome to Tri Puzzle, an elegant, highly engaging spatial-reasoning board and puzzle game that reimagines classic grid mechanics through the geometric beauty of equilateral triangles. Set within a sleek, modern aesthetic reminiscent of crystal lattice structures, architectural blueprints, and stained-glass artwork, players take on the role of Master Geometers tasked with weaving vibrant triangular tiles into complex tessellations, completing targeted color networks, and clearing geometric matrices.
In Tri Puzzle, 1 to 4 players interact with an expanding hexagonal or triangular grid board, placing geometric polyiamonds—composite shapes formed from edge-connected equilateral triangles—to construct seamless patterns, complete multi-cell lines, and solve intricate spatial challenges. Unlike square-grid block games, the triangular topology of Tri Puzzle introduces six directions of movement and alignment rather than four. Removing or placing a single triangular piece can alter multiple intersecting diagonal axes across the board, creating dynamic chain reactions and deeply satisfying tactical shifts.
Combining spatial logic, pattern recognition, color-matching mechanics, and risk-management strategies, Tri Puzzle delivers an intellectually invigorating puzzle experience for casual players and seasoned tabletop strategists alike. Will you master the three-axis plane to construct harmonious geometric masterpieces, or will an uncalculated placement block your spatial paths and shatter your crystalline canvas?
1.2 Component Inventory
Every standard physical or digital interactive edition of Tri Puzzle includes high-density, beautifully crafted components designed for maximum tactile clarity and visual appeal:
- 1 Central Prism Grid Canvas: A dual-sided, embossed board featuring a small $6 \times 6 \times 6$ triangular matrix on one side (Beginner/Fast Play) and a large $10 \times 10 \times 10$ hexagonal/triangular matrix on the reverse (Standard/Expert Play).
- 120 Acrylic Tri-Tile Polyiamonds: Weighted, vibrant triangular tiles ranging from single triangles (moniamonds) to 6-triangle blocks (hexiamonds):
- 24 Moniamonds & Diamonds (1-Tile and 2-Tile Pieces)
- 36 Triamonds & Tetriamonds (3-Tile and 4-Tile Angular Pieces)
- 40 Pentiamonds (5-Tile Complex Shapes)
- 20 Hexiamonds (6-Tile Large Blocks)
- 1 Triad Drafting Stand: A three-slot staging tray used to display available tiles in turn-based and competitive modes.
- 1 Crystal Prism Score Tracker: An outer perimeter track used to log placement scores, line completion bonuses, and color-matching combos.
- 20 Prism Focus Tokens: Special resource tokens expended to rotate tiles, swap active pieces, or clear isolated grid spaces.
- 4 Geometer Reference Boards: Personal slates detailing piece distributions, directional axes, and end-game scoring multipliers.
1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design
Tri Puzzle features a striking geometric aesthetic inspired by minimalist art, illuminated crystals, and kaleidoscope optics. The game board is rendered in cool slate gray with crisp, debossed white grid lines. Pieces shine in five distinct translucent gemstone hues: Sapphire Blue, Emerald Green, Ruby Red, Topaz Gold, and Amethyst Purple. To ensure complete accessibility for color-blind and visually impaired players, every color hue is paired with a distinct, debossed geometric internal pattern (e.g., Sapphire = Concentric Triangles, Emerald = Diagonal Stripes, Ruby = Cross-Hatching, Topaz = Stippled Dots, Amethyst = Solid Core).
1.4 Core Objectives
The primary objective in Tri Puzzle is to achieve the highest total Geometer Mastery Score (GMS) by systematically fitting triangular polyiamonds onto the board, filling full diagonal or horizontal axes, completing geometric target patterns, and managing spatial real estate. Points are awarded through:
- Tile Placement: Earning base points corresponding to the number of individual triangular units within each placed piece.
- Axis Clears: Fully filling any of the three directional grid lines (Horizontal, Left-Diagonal, Right-Diagonal) across the board.
- Prism Color Matches: Aligning matching colored triangle edges to form solid-colored geometric shapes (Prism Hubs).
- Streak Multipliers: Clearing consecutive axis lines across successive turns without breaking spatial continuity.
Part II: Gameplay Instructions
2.1 Core Mechanics & Alignment Rules
To succeed in Tri Puzzle, players must understand the three-axis grid orientation and polyiamond alignment principles.
Rule 1: The Three-Axis Grid System
Unlike traditional square grids defined by horizontal ($X$) and vertical ($Y$) axes, the Tri Puzzle canvas operates along three primary grid axes:
- Horizontal Axis ($H$): Parallel lines running left to right.
- Left-Diagonal Axis ($LD$): Lines sloping from top-left to bottom-right at a $60^\circ$ angle.
- Right-Diagonal Axis ($RD$): Lines sloping from bottom-left to top-right at a $120^\circ$ angle.
A line clear is triggered whenever any single row along any of these three directions is completely filled with triangle units!
Rule 2: Valid Tile Placement
- A piece may be placed on any open triangular spaces on the grid, provided all individual triangular units of the piece fit completely within the grid border.
- Pieces must fit edge-to-edge along the triangular grid lines and may not overlap previously placed tiles.
- Rotation & Flipping: Unless restricted by specific difficulty scenarios, pieces may be rotated in $60^\circ$ increments or flipped over to fit open spaces.
Rule 3: Line Clearing & Cascade Mechanics
- Whenever a complete line spanning the length of the board along the $H$, $LD$, or $RD$ axis is fully covered, those tiles are instantly cleared from the canvas.
- If a single placed piece simultaneously completes lines across two or three axes (e.g., an $H$-line and an $LD$-line at the same time), a Multi-Axis Prism Flash is triggered, earning exponential bonus points!
2.2 Game Setup
- Select Canvas & Board Side: Place the Central Prism Grid Canvas in the middle of the play area. Choose Side A ($6 \times 6 \times 6$) for introductory or fast games, or Side B ($10 \times 10 \times 10$) for full-length strategic matches.
- Organize the Tile Bank: Place all acrylic polyiamond pieces into the general draw bag and mix them thoroughly.
- Populate the Drafting Stand: Draw 3 random tiles from the bag and place them face-up in the Triad Drafting Stand.
- Distribute Player Consoles:
- Provide each player with a Geometer Reference Board and a scoring token.
- Give each player 3 Prism Focus Tokens for emergency tactical alterations.
- Set scoring markers to 0 on the outer Prism Score Tracker.
- Determine the First Geometer: The player who most recently drew a triangle, solved a logic puzzle, or measured an angle goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.
2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play
Navigating the triangular plane requires foresight and flexibility. Master geometries utilize four primary strategic concepts:
Technique 1: Central Core Preservation
Avoid over-packing the center of the board early in the game. Keep the central hexagon open to allow placement of large 5-tile (pentiamond) and 6-tile (hexiamond) pieces. Work inward from the three outer corners of the canvas.
Technique 2: Triangular Pocket Management
Single isolated triangular vacancies (moniamond pockets) surrounded by filled tiles are difficult to fill because moniamond pieces are rare in the drafting pool. Always place pieces in a way that leaves two-triangle or three-triangle open edge spans rather than single isolated holes.
Technique 3: Tri-Axis Intersections
Look for intersection points where an $H$-line, an $LD$-line, and an $RD$-line cross through a single cell. Placing a tile into an intersection cell can complete three lines simultaneously, yielding the highest possible single-turn score in the game!
Technique 4: Prism Focus Preservation
Save your Prism Focus Tokens for moments when none of the three active pieces in the Drafting Stand fit into your open canvas space. Spending a token to reroll the drafting stand or rotate an awkward piece can save you from an early knockout.
2.4 Structure of a Play Session
A complete match of Tri Puzzle flows through four distinct phases executed sequentially on every player's turn:
- Phase 1: Spatial Scanning & Selection
- Inspect the 3 active polyiamonds displayed in the Triad Drafting Stand.
- Scan the canvas along the $H$, $LD$, and $RD$ axes to identify candidate placement zones and potential line completion opportunities.
- Phase 2: Placement & Focus Execution (Action Phase)
- Select 1 piece from the drafting stand and place it legally onto the board.
- Optional Action: Spend 1 Prism Focus Token to flip/rotate the piece or clear a single isolated blocking tile from the board.
- Phase 3: Axis Resolution & Clearing
- Identify all newly filled rows along the horizontal and diagonal axes.
- Remove all cleared tiles from the filled lines and return them to the tile pool.
- Calculate and log base placement points, axis clear bonuses, and color-matching multipliers on the score track.
- Phase 4: Drafting Refill & Turn Hand-Off
- Once all 3 pieces in the current drafting stand have been placed, draw 3 new pieces from the supply bag to refill the stand.
- Pass the turn clockwise to the next Geometer.

2.6 Game Modes
2.6.1 Standard Prism Duel (1 to 4 Players - Turn-Based Competitive)
The core competitive experience. Players share a central board and draft from a common tile pool, competing to achieve the highest cumulative score by completing lines and executing color-matching combos over a fixed number of rounds or until space runs out.
2.6.2 Zen Mosaic (Solo Mode - Puzzle Challenge)
A relaxed, single-player logic mode where the player is given a pre-set board configuration with fixed obstacles. The objective is to completely clear the board or reach a target score of 3,000 points using a limited deck of polyiamond cards.
2.6.3 Speed Grid Sprint (2 to 4 Players - Real-Time Blitz)
- Setup: Every player receives an identical personal mini-board and a set of 20 starting tiles.
- Gameplay: Players race simultaneously to place all 20 tiles onto their board and execute as many axis clears as possible within a strict 3-minute time limit.
- Victory: The player with the highest total score when the timer expires wins!
2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix
In all game modes, player performance is evaluated using the standardized Prism Scoring Matrix:
- Base Placement Points: 10 Points per individual triangular unit contained within a placed piece (e.g., placing a 5-unit Pentiamond = 50 Points).
- Single Axis Clear ($H$, $LD$, or $RD$): 150 Points.
- Dual-Axis Combo (2 Lines Simultaneously): 400 Points ($1.33\times$ Multiplier).
- Tri-Axis Combo (3 Lines Simultaneously): 1,000 Points ($2.2\times$ Multiplier!).
- Color Match Hub: +50 Points whenever adjacent edges of two placed tiles match in color.
- Unused Focus Tokens: +100 Bonus Points per remaining token at game end.
2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions
A match of Tri Puzzle ends immediately under either of the following circumstances:
- Grid Lockout: The active player cannot legally place any of the available pieces from the active Drafting Stand onto the board, and has no Focus Tokens remaining to alter the state.
- Tile Pool Depletion: All polyiamond pieces in the supply bag have been drawn and placed onto the board.
The player with the highest total Geometer Mastery Score (GMS) on the tracking board is declared the Master Geometer!
Tie-Breakers
If two or more players tie for the highest score, resolve the tie using the following priority rules:
- The player who completed the most Tri-Axis Combos during the match.
- The player with the most remaining Prism Focus Tokens.
- The player who placed the single highest number of Hexiamond (6-unit) tiles.
2.9 Rule Clarifications & Spatial Etiquette
- Placement Precision: A piece is considered locked in place as soon as it is released onto the board. Players may not reposition or retrieve placed tiles after releasing their touch.
- No Boundary Overhang: Every triangular segment of a polyiamond must rest entirely inside the outer perimeter line of the grid. No partial overhangs are permitted.
- Public Drafting Information: All active pieces in the Triad Drafting Stand are fully visible to all players; secret drafting is strictly prohibited.
