Hunting Jack - At the Train Station
Hunting Jack - At the Train Station: Game Description & Official Rulebook
Part I: Game Description
1.1 Overview and Lore
Welcome to Hunting Jack - At the Train Station, an intense, high-stakes game of asymmetric deduction, hidden movement, tactical bluffing, and timed railway logistics. Set in the fog-drenched, coal-dusted halls of London's bustling Victoria Terminal Railway Hub in the late 19th century, players plunge into a thrilling cat-and-mouse game between the notorious fugitive known only as "Jack" and a coordinated team of elite Scotland Yard Investigators.
In Hunting Jack - At the Train Station, 1 player steps into the shadows as Jack, an elusive escapee attempting to blend into crowds, board departing steam locomotives, or vanish through secret underground maintenance tunnels before midnight. Up to 4 other players command the Investigator Team (comprising the Chief Inspector, a Railway Constable, a Bloodhound Handler, and a Station Telegrapher), utilizing line-of-sight tracking, platform blockades, passenger interrogations, and telegram networks to corner Jack before he boards his getaway train.
Combining hidden grid movement, asymmetrical abilities, time-pressured movement mechanics, and deep psychological deduction, Hunting Jack - At the Train Station delivers an edge-of-your-seat tabletop experience for strategy enthusiasts, deduction fans, and thematic board gamers alike. Will Jack slip onto the 11:45 Express to Dover unnoticed, or will Scotland Yard's dragnet trap him on Platform 4 as the final steam whistle blows?
1.2 Component Inventory
Every standard physical publication or digital edition of Hunting Jack - At the Train Station includes high-density, exquisitely detailed components designed for immersive subterranean tracking:
- 1 Central Station Terminal Board: A dual-sided grid map depicting the bustling terminal (Platforms 1 through 8, Ticket Concourse, Luggage Hub, Telegraph Office, Waiting Rooms, and Coal Yards).
- 1 Jack Hidden Movement Pad & Sight Shield: A secret grid ledger pad and protective shield used by Jack to record movements, carriage boardings, and tunnel escapes out of sight of the investigators.
- 5 Sculpted Miniature Figures:
- 1 Jack Silhouette Figure (used when Jack is revealed or spotted)
- 1 Chief Inspector Miniature
- 1 Railway Constable Miniature
- 1 Bloodhound Handler Miniature
- 1 Station Telegrapher Miniature
- 60 Passenger & Crowds Tokens: Cardboard or plastic tokens representing innocent commuters and station personnel crowding the concourse.
- 24 Clue & Footprint Markers: Reversible tokens placed on spaces where Jack has recently passed or left traces.
- 1 Departure Board Clock & Track: A mechanical clock dial tracking the 12 time intervals leading up to the final train departures.
- 16 Station Action Cards: Specialized tactical cards split into Jack's Escape Cards and Investigators' Dragnet Cards.
- 4 Investigator Reference Dashboards: Player slates detailing movement ranges, search actions, and special abilities.
1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design
Hunting Jack - At the Train Station features a moody, atmospheric Victorian aesthetic. The board canvas is styled in sepia tones, dark ironwood textures, and glowing gaslamp light pools, creating a tense atmosphere of late-night mystery. To guarantee complete universal accessibility for color-blind and visually impaired players, every platform, train carriage, and station sector features high-contrast border outlines paired with unique geometric icons (e.g., Ticket Concourse = Diamond, Platform Lines = Parallel Bars, Maintenance Tunnels = Crosshatch).
1.4 Core Objectives
The objectives are completely asymmetrical based on the role selected at the start of the match:
- Jack's Objective: Successfully board an active, departing train at any of the 8 platforms using a secret ticket, OR remain undetected on the board until the 12th time interval clock expires.
- Investigators' Objective: Deduce Jack's secret location and move an investigator figure onto the exact space occupied by Jack to arrest him, OR block all platform exits so Jack cannot escape before time runs out.
Part II: Gameplay Instructions
2.1 Core Mechanics & The Laws of the Station
Mastering Hunting Jack - At the Train Station requires mastering hidden movement math, line-of-sight rules, crowd concealment, and departure logistics.
Rule 1: Secret Grid Movement (Jack)
- Jack does not move his physical miniature on the main board during standard turns.
- Instead, Jack writes his destination space number onto his Hidden Movement Pad.
- Jack may move 1 adjacent grid space per turn on foot. He may use Coal Cart Shortcuts or Maintenance Tunnels by playing special Escape Cards.
- Crowd Concealment: If Jack ends his turn on a grid space containing a Passenger Token, he remains completely hidden and leaves no immediate footprint marker.
Rule 2: Open Movement & Search Actions (Investigators)
- Investigators always move their physical miniatures in full view of all players on the central board.
- Each Investigator figure moves up to 2 grid spaces per turn along open concourses or platform walkways.
- Investigators execute Search Actions on adjacent spaces to reveal whether Jack was present on that space during any of the last 3 turns.
Rule 3: Clue & Footprint Traces
- When Jack moves through an empty space (without passenger tokens), he must place a face-down Footprint Marker on his hidden movement log.
- If an Investigator conducts a search on a space Jack visited within the last 3 turns, Jack must verbally announce "Clue Found!" and place a yellow Clue Marker on that board space, narrowing down his recent trail!
2.2 Game Setup
- Set Up the Station Terminal: Lay the Central Station Terminal Board in the center of the table. Position the Departure Board Clock at Time 0 (11:00 PM).
- Populate the Concourse: Place Passenger Tokens onto all designated waiting room, ticket line, and platform spaces according to the scenario setup card.
- Assign Roles: One player takes the role of Jack and sits behind the Sight Shield with the Hidden Movement Pad. Up to 4 players choose their Investigator figures and dashboards.
- Place Investigator Miniatures: Investigators place their miniatures on their designated starting locations (e.g., Chief Inspector at the Central Police Kiosk, Telegrapher at the Telegraph Office).
- Determine Jack's Secret Start: Jack secretly chooses any unobserved starting space on the board (marked with a shadow icon) and logs it as Space #0 on his pad.
- Distribute Action Cards:
- Give Jack 3 random Escape Cards (e.g., Disguise, Smoke Bomb, Tunnel Sprint).
- Give the Investigator team 3 Dragnet Cards (e.g., Platform Lockout, Whistle Blast, Bloodhound Scent).
2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play
Succeeding in Hunting Jack - At the Train Station requires psychological strategy, predictive positioning, and resource management:
Technique 1: Jack's Double-Back Bluff
Jack can deliberately move through an open concourse space without a crowd token to leave a clue marker, leading investigators to believe he is heading toward Platform 1. On his next turn, Jack plays a Disguise Card and doubles back into the crowded Waiting Room, heading toward Platform 8 instead!
Technique 2: The Telegrapher's Dragnet Net
The Station Telegrapher player should use their turn to broadcast platform updates. By locking down Platform gates ahead of time, the Telegrapher narrows Jack's possible escape routes and forces him into tight corridors where the Bloodhound Handler can detect him.
Technique 3: Crowd Hopping
Jack should carefully plan routes that hop from one Passenger Token to another. Remaining inside crowds prevents Scotland Yard from gaining fresh clues, forcing them to spend precious action points searching empty spaces.
Technique 4: Constable Blockades
The Railway Constable figure can physically stand in narrow tunnel doorways or platform access points, blocking Jack from using specific shortcuts unless Jack spends an irreplaceable Smoke Bomb Card.
2.4 Structure of a Play Session
A full game of Hunting Jack - At the Train Station takes place over 12 Time Rounds (representing 11:00 PM to Midnight). Each round flows through four operational phases:
- Phase 1: Railway Clock Advance
- Advance the Departure Board Clock by 1 Time Interval (e.g., 11:00 PM to 11:05 PM).
- Check for train arrivals or departures on Platforms 1 through 8.
- Phase 2: Jack's Secret Movement Phase
- Jack secretly records his new destination space on his Hidden Movement Pad.
- Jack may play 1 Escape Card from his hand to use a tunnel or disguise.
- If Jack moves onto a space occupied by a passenger token, he stays completely silent. If moving across open terrain, he logs an exposed footprint step.
- Phase 3: Investigators' Dragnet Phase
- Each Investigator takes a turn in any agreed order, performing up to 2 actions:
- Move Action: Advance up to 2 grid spaces along walkway paths.
- Search Action: Inspect an adjacent space for recent clues or hidden footprints.
- Interrogate Action: Remove a Passenger Token from a space to check if Jack is disguised underneath!
- Special Ability: Activate role-specific abilities (e.g., Bloodhound scent tracking).
- Each Investigator takes a turn in any agreed order, performing up to 2 actions:
- Phase 4: Clue Verification & Platform Check
- Jack must truthfully respond to any searches conducted during Phase 3.
- If Jack is on the same space as an Investigator, he is Arrested, ending the game immediately!
- If Jack is on an active departure platform with a valid ticket card, he Escapes, winning the match!
2.5 Action Costs & Station Roles Matrix
| Role / Figure | Movement Allowance | Primary Action / Ability | Key Strategic Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jack (Fugitive) | 1 Space (Hidden) | Plays Escape Cards / Disguise | Bluffs routes, uses tunnels, targets trains |
| Chief Inspector | 2 Spaces (Open) | Wide-Area Search (2-space radius) | Corrals Jack in broad concourses |
| Railway Constable | 2 Spaces (Open) | Physical Doorway / Gate Lock | Blocks corridors and platform access |
| Bloodhound Handler | 2 Spaces (Open) | Sniff Footprints (Detects last 4 turns) | Traces old trails back to Jack's current location |
| Station Telegrapher | 1 Space (Open) | Remote Lockout / Platform Call | Closes train boarding gates from afar |
2.6 Game Modes
2.6.1 Midnight Express (Standard 2 to 5 Players)
The core competitive experience. 1 player controls Jack; 1 to 4 players control the Scotland Yard Investigators in a full 12-round tactical battle across Victoria Terminal.
2.6.2 Fog over London (Advanced Scenario Variant)
- Setup: Heavy fog reduces all Investigators' line-of-sight and movement speed by 1 space.
- Gameplay: Jack gains access to 2 additional secret maintenance tunnel entrances across the station grid, making detection significantly harder!
2.6.3 Solo Detective Challenge (1 Player vs Automated AI Jack)
- Setup: The player controls all 4 Investigators against a programmed Jack AI Movement Deck.
- Gameplay: Draw movement cards from the AI deck that dictate Jack's logical escape vectors, requiring pure deductive elimination to trap him before the 12th clock tick!
2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix
At the conclusion of the match, victory points and match ratings are logged on the Station Ledger based on time remaining and clue efficiency:
- Investigators' Arrest Bonus: +500 Points if Jack is captured on or before Time Interval 6; +250 Points if captured on or before Time Interval 11.
- Jack's Clean Escape Bonus: +500 Points if Jack escapes via train without leaving more than 3 total clues on the board canvas.
- Clue Minimization Rating: Extra points awarded to Jack for every unused Escape Card remaining in his hand at match end.
2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions
A game of Hunting Jack - At the Train Station concludes under any of the following conditions:
- Immediate Capture: An Investigator figure enters the exact space occupied by Jack and conducts an arrest. Investigators Win!
- Successful Escape: Jack reaches an active platform, boards a departing train, and escapes the station grid. Jack Wins!
- Time Expiration: The Departure Clock hits the 12th interval (Midnight) without Jack being captured. Jack slips out into the London fog and Wins!
2.9 Rule Clarifications & Station Etiquette
- Absolute Truthfulness: Jack must be 100% truthful when responding to Investigator searches and clue queries. A single false answer invalidates the game!
- No Physical Clues: Jack must keep his hands behind his sight shield at all times except when placing public clue markers, preventing investigators from reading his physical movements or body language over the board.
- Passenger Token Limits: A single space may hold a maximum of 1 Passenger Token at a time. Once an Investigator interrogates and removes a Passenger Token, that space remains empty for the rest of the match!
