Gold Mine

Gold Mine: Game Description & Official Rulebook

Part I: Game Description

1.1 Overview and Lore

Welcome to Gold Mine, a high-stakes, tile-placement strategy, resource management, and spatial navigation board game set during the feverish height of the 19th-century Klondike Gold Rush. Set deep within the treacherous, unmapped caverns of Whispering Canyon, players step into the mud-caked boots of rival Prospector Barons. Armed with picks, dynamite, dynamite carts, and lanterns, your goal is to blast through solid granite, excavate sprawling underground tunnel networks, extract glittering seams of raw gold ore, and safely haul your riches back to the surface claim office before rival miners collapse your shafts or steal your haul.

Gold Mine seamlessly blends dynamic modular board building with tense push-your-luck tile mechanics, spatial grid movement, and direct player interaction. Rather than starting with a pre-determined board layout, players build the cavern network collaboratively turn by turn, laying down subterranean tunnel tiles that reveal glowing gold seams, treacherous underwater rivers, volatile gas pockets, and structural support beams. To claim the gold hidden within the earth, prospectors must carefully manage their action points, transport heavy ore carts along narrow mine-cart tracks, navigate around cave-ins, and outmaneuver rival claims.

Designed for 1 to 5 players, Gold Mine offers a rich spectrum of gameplay experiences: from a tense, highly strategic solo expedition where you race against rising groundwater levels, to chaotic multi-player competitive showdowns filled with dynamite blasts, claim jumpers, and territorial grid blockades. With its rustic visual aesthetic, chunky wooden playing pieces, weighted gold nugget tokens, and deeply thematic mechanics, Gold Mine delivers an unforgettable tabletop experience of fortune, risk, and subterranean strategy.

1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design

Gold Mine adopts a rich, high-contrast 19th-century frontier industrial visual style. Deep earth tones, weathered timber grain, and dark slate backgrounds contrast sharply with the shimmering metallic sheen of the gold tokens and bright lantern icons. To ensure 100% universal accessibility and complete color-blind compatibility, every cavern tile features unique line-art icon patterns alongside color cues, and all resource nodes display clear numerical yield symbols.

1.4 Core Objectives

The primary objective in Gold Mine is to excavate the subterranean tunnel network, extract gold nuggets from revealed seams, load them into your ore cart, and successfully navigate back to the surface Claim Office to bank your earnings before the mine collapses or time expires.

Victory points and wealth are accumulated through:

  1. Banked Gold Deposits: Hauling extracted gold tokens back to the surface bank vault.
  2. Claim Deed Ownership: Securing long-term ownership of high-yield underground junction tiles.
  3. Hazard Mitigation: Clearing dangerous cave-ins and installing timber support beams.
  4. Resource Hoarding: Retaining valuable equipment tools and unspent supply funds at the end of the game.

Part II: Gameplay Instructions

2.1 Core Mechanics & Spatial Laws

Mastering Gold Mine requires strict adherence to modular tile placement, movement costs, cart weight limits, and subterranean physics laws.

Law 1: The Law of Cavern Excavation (Tile Placement)

  • When a player moves toward an unexplored edge of the cavern grid, they must immediately draw and place a new Cavern Tunnel Tile from the supply bag.
  • Legal Edge Alignment: The open tunnel paths on the new tile must match seamlessly with at least one open tunnel path on the adjacent existing tile.
  • If a drawn tile cannot be placed legally in any orientation, it is discarded back into the supply bag and a replacement tile is drawn.

Law 2: Action Point Economy (AP System)

  • On their turn, each player receives 4 Action Points (AP) to spend across various subterranean activities. Unused APs cannot be saved for future turns.
  • Action Cost Menu:
    • Explore & Place Tile: 1 AP.
    • Move Prospector (1 Space): 1 AP (Modifed by weight; see Law 3).
    • Mine Gold Seam (Extract 1 Nugget): 1 AP (Requires Pickax equipment).
    • Place Support Timber: 1 AP (Consumes 1 Timber Beam).
    • Blast Granite / Clear Rubble: 2 AP (Requires 1 Dynamite Card).
    • Bank Gold at Surface: 1 AP (Must be located at the Surface Entrance).

Law 3: Cart Weight & Movement Penalties

  • Prospectors carry gold in their physical Ore Carts. An empty cart allows standard 1 AP per space movement.
  • Weight Thresholds:
    • Carrying 1 to 4 Gold Weight: Normal movement (1 AP per space).
    • Carrying 5 to 8 Gold Weight: Heavy load (Costs 2 AP per space moved).
    • Carrying 9+ Gold Weight: Overloaded! Movement is impossible until gold is dumped or stored in an underground depot.

Law 4: Structural Volatility & Cave-Ins

  • Every time a high-yield Gold Seam tile is completely emptied of gold nuggets, its structural integrity decreases.
  • The player who extracts the final nugget from a tile must roll the Granite Hazard Die.
  • Hazard Die Outcomes:
    • Safe (1-3): The cavern remains stable.
    • Tremor (4-5): Place a Rubble Marker on an adjacent tunnel path, blocking movement until cleared.
    • Cave-In (6): The tile collapses! Any player on the tile takes damage, drops their gold, and the tile is replaced with a solid Granite Blockade.

2.2 Game Setup

  1. Position the Surface Hub: Place the Surface Camp & Claim Office Board in the center of the table.
  2. Initialize the Cavern Deck: Shuffle all 100 Cavern Tunnel Tiles face-down and place them into the cloth Exploration Bag. Place the initial "Mine Entrance Shaft" tile adjacent to the Surface Board.
  3. Stock the Bank & Supplies: Place all weighted metal Gold Tokens, Timber Beams, and Rubble Markers near the Surface Board to form the General Supply Depot.
  4. Distribute Player Gear: Each player selects a Prospector color and receives:
    • 1 Custom Prospector Miniature & 1 Wooden Ore Cart.
    • 1 Basic Pickaxe Equipment Card.
    • 2 Timber Support Beams.
    • $200 starting capital in supply tokens.
  5. Place Miners: Place all prospector figures on the Surface Entrance Shaft space.
  6. Determine Lead Prospector: The player who has most recently visited a mountain range or held a real gold ring takes the first turn. Play proceeds clockwise.

2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play

Succeeding in Gold Mine demands spatial foresight, risk calculation, and efficient inventory management rather than reckless subterranean rushing. Master prospectors rely on four primary tactical principles:

Technique 1: Timber Shoring (Preventing Disaster)

Never extract the last gold nugget from a massive seam without first placing a Timber Support Beam on that tile! Support beams negate Cave-In die rolls, guaranteeing your escape route remains open.

Technique 2: Short-Haul Relays

Instead of walking all the way back to the surface whenever your cart is full, set up an underground Storage Depot at a central junction! Drop collected ore there and use a secondary player action or cart rail upgrade to haul large loads in fewer high-efficiency trips.

Technique 3: Tactical Blast Blockades

Use Dynamite strategically! Blasting a ceiling behind you as you carry a massive fortune back to the surface seals the tunnel behind you, preventing rival claim jumpers from catching up and stealing your haul.

Technique 4: Circuit Path Loop Construction

Avoid building long, single-file dead-end tunnels! Always aim to loop your tunnel placements back toward central elevator shafts so that a single cave-in doesn't trap you deep underground without oxygen or supplies.

2.4 Structure of a Play Session

A standard turn in Gold Mine progresses through four structured, sequential phases:

  1. Phase 1: Supply & Gear Maintenance
    • Draw 1 Equipment Card from the Supply Deck (if located at the Surface Board).
    • Check active lantern charge levels and timber inventory.
  2. Phase 2: Action Point Expenditure (4 APs)
    • Spend your 4 Action Points performing any combination of legal actions (Movement, Excavation, Mining, Timbering, Blasting, or Banking).
    • Resolve movement weight adjustments and spatial edge alignments in real time.
  3. Phase 3: Environmental Hazard Check
    • If you stand on a Flooded Shaft or Gas Pocket tile at the end of your turn, apply the relevant environmental effects (e.g., discard 1 AP for next turn due to exhaustion).
    • If a seam was emptied during Phase 2, roll the Granite Hazard Die and apply structural results.
  4. Phase 4: Turn Handover & Refill
    • Confirm your cart’s total weight value and update your personal player board.
    • Pass play clockwise to the next prospector.

2.5 Cavern Tile & Resource Matrix

Tile Type & Name Visual Feature Gold Yield Potential Hazard Risk Level
Standard Tunnel Track Earth & Wooden Rails 0 Nuggets (Pure Transit) Safe ($0\%$ Cave-In Risk)
Shallow Vein Seam Scattered Yellow Flecks 2 Small Nuggets ($200 Value) Low ($16\%$ Cave-In Risk)
Rich Mother-Lode Glowing Gold Clusters 4 Large Bullion Tokens ($1,200 Value) High ($50\%$ Cave-In Risk)
Flooded Waterway Underground Stream 1 Small Nugget ($100 Value) Movement Penalty (+1 AP Cost)
Volatile Gas Pocket Hazy Green Mist 2 Medium Bullion Tokens ($600 Value) Explosive (No Dynamite Allowed!)
Granite Blockade Solid Rock Wall 0 Nuggets (Obstacle) Must be Blasted (Costs 2 AP + 1 Dynamite)

2.6 Game Modes

2.6.1 Klondike Rush (2 to 5 Players - Competitive Strategy)

The core competitive experience! Players race to extract limited gold reserves from Whispering Canyon, competition escalates as tunnels intertwine, and the player with the highest banked wealth at the surface when the main gold supply empties wins.

2.6.2 Survival in Whispering Canyon (1 Player - Solo Challenge)

  • Setup: A single prospector enters the cavern with a fixed 20-turn clock.
  • Gameplay: Water levels rise automatically at the end of every turn, permanently flooding the lowest grid rows.
  • Victory: Extract at least $5,000 in gold and escape to the surface before the entire mine is submerged!

2.6.3 Claim Jumpers (2 to 4 Players - High-Interaction Versus)

  • Gameplay: Direct player-vs-player combat is enabled! Players can use Lasso and Pickaxe cards to ambush rival miners in dark tunnels, stealing gold directly from their ore carts unless fended off with Lantern Flares.

2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix

At the conclusion of a match, players tally their assets on the Prospector's Master Ledger:

  • Banked Gold Total: $1$ Victory Point per $100 value of gold safely deposited in the Surface Bank Vault.
  • Unbanked Underground Gold: $1$ Victory Point per $300 value of gold still sitting in your cart (50% value loss due to transport fees).
  • Claim Deed Bonuses: $+5$ Victory Points for every junction tile bearing your personal claim marker.
  • Structural Safety Award: $+10$ Victory Points for the player who placed the most Timber Support Beams during the match.
  • Stranded Miner Penalty: Deduct 15 Victory Points if your prospector is trapped underground without an exit path when the game ends!

2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions

A game of Gold Mine officially concludes upon reaching any of the following resolution triggers:

  1. Resource Exhaustion (Standard End): The final gold nugget token is drawn from the General Supply Depot and mined from the board. All players receive 2 final escape turns to reach the surface.
  2. Total Mine Collapse: 5 or more Granite Blockade tiles are created via structural cave-ins, causing a massive seismic event that seals the mine permanently.
  3. Bank Vault Target Met: A prospector successfully banks $10,000 in gold at the Surface Claim Office, triggering immediate round completion.

The prospector who accumulates the highest total Victory Points on the Master Ledger is officially crowned the Gold Rush Baron of Whispering Canyon!

2.9 Rule Clarifications & Mine Etiquette

  • Cart Capacity Enforcement: Players must keep physical gold tokens sitting inside their wooden ore cart miniature; excess tokens that spill out cannot be carried and must be dropped on the current tile.
  • Tile Placement Finality: Once a Cavern Tunnel Tile has been placed on the grid and connected to an existing tile, its position and orientation cannot be changed for the remainder of the game.
  • No Blocking Shaft Entrances: Players cannot intentionally drop dynamite or trigger cave-ins on the central Mine Entrance Shaft tile; the entrance must always remain accessible.
