Gold Mine

Gold Mine: Game Description & Official Rulebook

Part I: Game Description

1.1 Overview and Lore

Welcome to Gold Mine, an exhilarating, high-stakes game of subterranean excavation, resource management, spatial tile placement, and push-your-luck prospector strategy. Set during the golden age of wild mountain prospecting within the rugged peaks of the Sutter Ridge Mountains, players step into the boots of rival Mining Company Captains competing to carve out deep underground shaft networks, discover lucrative ore veins, and haul glittery gold nuggets back to the surface before the mountain collapses.

In Gold Mine, 1 to 4 players explore an ever-expanding, player-built cavern grid. Starting at a central Surface Mine Entrance, players take turns drafting and placing underground Tunnel and Cavern Tiles to reveal hidden veins of rich gold ore, shimmering silver pockets, unstable dynamite deposits, and ancient subterranean underground rivers. Once tunnels are carved, players dispatch their crew of Prospector Figures into the deep dark shafts to mine valuable resources, transport heavy gold carts along rail lines, and sabotage rival operations through clever cave-in tactics.

Combining strategic spatial planning, tactical worker movement, dynamic board construction, and thrilling push-your-luck risk mechanics, Gold Mine offers an immensely engaging, highly competitive tabletop experience for strategy enthusiasts, family game nights, and resource-management fans alike. Will you build a deep, organized shaft network and haul out a historic fortune, or will greed drive you too deep into collapsing tunnels, leaving your gold buried forever?

1.2 Component Inventory

Every standard physical publication or digital edition of Gold Mine includes high-density, beautifully sculpted components designed for tactile underground exploration:

  • 1 Central Surface Mine Hub Board: A heavy-duty starting tile depicting the surface mining camp, bank vault, supply shop, and main vertical elevator shaft.
  • 72 Heavyweight Tunnel & Cavern Tiles: Hexagonal exploration tiles used to dynamically build the subterranean map:
    • 24 Straight & Curved Tunnel Shaft Tiles
    • 20 Dead-End Gold Vein Tiles (1 to 3 Gold Nuggets)
    • 12 Subterranean Junction Tiles (3-Way & 4-Way Crossings)
    • 8 Dynamite & Fault Line Hazard Tiles
    • 8 Underground River & Lake Waterway Tiles
  • 60 Molded Metal Gold Nuggets: Weighted, metallic gold-painted resource tokens representing raw gold ore.
  • 30 Raw Silver Ore Cubes: Metallic silver cubes representing secondary trade resources.
  • 16 Custom Wooden Prospector Miniatures: Colored wooden figures representing mining crews (4 figures per player color: Red, Yellow, Blue, Green).
  • 4 Mine Cart Miniatures: Plastic or wooden mining carts used to transport multiple nuggets along rail lines.
  • 12 Wooden Dynamite Crate Markers: Red explosive tokens used to blast open closed tunnel walls or clear cave-in hazards.
  • 1 Prospector Claim Ledger Board: A perimeter score and resource track used to log refined gold values, bank deposits, and victory points.
  • 4 Captain Reference Dashboards: Player slates detailing turn structures, cart carrying capacities, and upgrade trees.

1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design

Gold Mine features an evocative visual design that captures the gritty, adventurous spirit of 19th-century gold prospecting. Tunnel tiles are rendered in rich earthy tones—deep slate grays, warm terracotta ochres, and glittering veins of foil-stamped gold accents that catch the light during play. To guarantee complete accessibility for color-blind and visually impaired players, every tile type pairs distinct artwork with bold edge iconography (e.g., Rail Lines = Parallel Lines, Waterways = Wavy Blue Icons, Hazards = Danger Triangles).

1.4 Core Objectives

The primary objective in Gold Mine is to accumulate the highest total Prospecting Net Worth (PNW) by the time the underground tile deck is completely exhausted and all miners return to the surface. Points are awarded through:

  1. Secured Gold Ore: Hauling gold nuggets back to the Surface Mine Hub and depositing them into your Bank Vault.
  2. Refined Silver Trade: Converting raw silver cubes into cash reserves at the surface camp.
  3. Claim Ownership: Controlling the deepest and most lucrative gold veins using Prospector Miniatures.
  4. Shaft Network Bonuses: Building the longest continuous underground rail line back to the main elevator.

Part II: Gameplay Instructions

2.1 Core Mechanics & Mining Laws

Mastering Gold Mine requires a firm grasp of tile placement, worker movement, resource weight limits, and cave hazard management.

Rule 1: The Law of Open Tunnels (Tile Placement)

  • When placing a new Tunnel or Cavern Tile onto the board, at least one tunnel edge on the new tile must connect logically to an existing open tunnel edge on the grid.
  • A player cannot place a solid rock wall edge directly against an open tunnel edge if it completely blocks access, unless a Dynamite Token is used to blast a custom passage.

Rule 2: Prospector Carrying Capacity & Movement

  • Each Prospector Miniature moves through connected tunnel paths on the grid.
  • Base Movement: A Prospector can move up to 3 connected tile steps per action point. Moving through tiles containing laid rail lines costs only half a movement point per tile!
  • Carrying Capacity: An unassisted Prospector can carry up to 2 Gold Nuggets at a time. If equipped with a Mine Cart Miniature, their carrying capacity increases to 5 Gold Nuggets, but their movement speed is reduced to 2 tile steps per action point.

Rule 3: The Unsecured Gold Risk

  • Gold nuggets collected deep inside the mine are considered Unsecured Gold as long as they remain in a miner's backpack or in an underground tunnel tile.
  • If a cave-in occurs or a miner is trapped in a flooded tile, all Unsecured Gold carried by that miner is dropped onto the local tile floor and can be stolen by rival players!
  • Gold becomes Secured only when transported all the way back to the Surface Mine Hub and deposited into the player's personal Bank Vault.

2.2 Game Setup

  1. Establish the Surface Hub: Place the Central Surface Mine Hub Board in the center of the play area.
  2. Prepare the Tile Deck: Shuffle all 72 Tunnel & Cavern Tiles face-down into three equal draw stacks (Upper Shafts, Deep Shafts, Abyss Shafts). Place them near the board.
  3. Set Up the Resource Bank: Place all metal Gold Nuggets, Silver Ore Cubes, Dynamite Tokens, and Mine Carts into the Central Supply Tray near the surface hub.
  4. Distribute Player Equipment:
    • Provide each player with a Captain Reference Dashboard and 4 Prospector Miniatures in their chosen color.
    • Place 2 Prospector Miniatures per player on the Surface Mine Hub; place the remaining 2 in their personal recruitment reserve.
    • Give each player 1 Starter Mine Cart and 1 Dynamite Token.
    • Set score markers to 0 on the Prospector Claim Ledger.
  5. Determine Lead Prospector: The player who most recently found a coin, visited a cave, or wore boots goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.

2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play

Succeeding in Gold Mine requires balancing aggressive exploration with secure supply-chain logistics. Master players employ four primary strategic techniques:

Technique 1: The Express Rail Trunk Line

Focus early turns on laying straight, interconnected rail tunnel tiles directly out from the Surface Mine Hub. Building a straight main transit line allows your miners to zip deep into the mountain and haul heavy carts back in a single turn!

Technique 2: Strategic Bottleneck Chokepoints

Place hazard tiles or dead-end junctions at key intersection points to force rival prospectors to take longer, winding detour routes back to the surface elevator, delaying their payout cycles.

Technique 3: Dynamite Wall Blasting

Never let a dead-end wall stop a lucrative haul. Spend a Dynamite Token to blow open a solid rock wall between two adjacent tiles, creating a secret shortcut straight to your bank vault!

Technique 4: Siphon and Steal Mechanics

If a rival miner drops Unsecured Gold due to a hazard trigger or is forced to retreat, move your unburdened prospector into their tile to pick up the abandoned ore and score an effortless profit.

2.4 Structure of a Play Session

A full game of Gold Mine takes place over a series of rounds until the subterranean tile deck is fully exhausted. Each player's turn consists of four structured operational phases:

  1. Phase 1: Underground Exploration (Tile Placement)
    • Draw the top Tunnel Tile from the active stack.
    • Place the tile onto the board following the Law of Open Tunnels.
    • If the placed tile displays a Gold Vein or Silver Deposit icon, populate that tile with the corresponding resource tokens from the bank supply.
  2. Phase 2: Crew Actions (3 Action Points)
    • Spend 3 Action Points across your active Prospector Miniatures to perform any combination of the following choices:
      • Move Miner: Advance a prospector through connected tunnel tiles.
      • Mine Ore: Extract 1 Gold Nugget or Silver Cube from the current tile onto your miner's dashboard.
      • Lay Rail Track: Spend 1 Silver Cube to add a permanent rail overlay onto a tunnel tile.
      • Detonate Dynamite: Spend 1 Dynamite Token to clear a cave-in or open a shortcut wall.
      • Deposit Ore: Unload carried gold at the Surface Mine Hub into your Bank Vault.
  3. Phase 3: Hazard Resolution & Cave Stability Check
    • If a Hazard Tile (Dynamite or Fault Line) was placed during Phase 1, roll the structural Cave Stability Die.
    • If a seismic symbol is rolled, trigger a local cave-in on matching color tiles, placing a Cave-In Marker that blocks movement until cleared.
  4. Phase 4: Turn Hand-Off & Supply Refill
    • Check for score milestones, clean up temporary markers, and pass the turn clockwise to the next player.

2.5 Action Costs & Resource Value Matrix

Action / Resource Action Cost / Requirement Base Value / Effect
Move Prospector 1 Action Point per 3 Tiles (Foot) Traverses tunnel network
Move Mine Cart 1 Action Point per 2 Tiles (Cart) Transports up to 5 Gold Nuggets
Mine Gold Ore 1 Action Point per Nugget Collects 1 Gold Nugget from vein
Secured Gold Nugget Deposited at Surface Hub 100 Net Worth Points
Secured Silver Cube Deposited at Surface Hub 40 Net Worth Points (or 1 Rail Track)
Dynamite Blast 1 Action Point + 1 Dynamite Token Blasts open wall / Clears Cave-In
Recruit New Miner Costs 200 Points at Surface Hub Unlocks 1 extra Prospector from reserve

2.6 Game Modes

2.6.1 Prospectors' Rush (2 to 4 Players - Standard Competitive)

The classic competitive tabletop experience. Players explore the mountain, mine gold veins, sabotage rival routes, and secure wealth in their bank vaults across a full 72-tile campaign session.

2.6.2 Deep Abyss Blitz (2 to 4 Players - High-Speed Race)

  • Setup: Use a trimmed 36-tile deck featuring maximum Gold Vein and Hazard density.
  • Gameplay: A fast, high-stakes sprint where players start with infinite dynamite and race to secure 1,500 Net Worth Points.
  • Victory: The first player to deposit 1,500 points in their bank vault wins instantly!

2.6.3 Lone Miner Survival (1 Player - Co-Op / Solo Challenge)

  • Setup: A single player operates against an automated Rising Flood Clock.
  • Gameplay: Explore the mine and extract at least 15 Gold Nuggets before water completely floods the vertical elevator shaft!

2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix

When the final tile in the Underground Tile Deck is placed and all players take one final turn, the game enters the Final Gold Audit:

  • Secured Vault Gold: Total points accumulated from all gold nuggets safely stored in your Surface Bank Vault.
  • Secured Vault Silver: Total points accumulated from remaining silver cubes stored in your vault.
  • Claim Ownership Bonus: +200 Points to the player controlling the single deepest mine tile on the grid.
  • Longest Rail Line Bonus: +300 Points to the player who constructed the longest unbroken rail line back to the hub.
  • Unsecured Gold Penalty: Any gold nugget left inside the mine (not brought to the surface) worth 0 Points!

2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions

A game of Gold Mine concludes under any of the following conditions:

  1. Tile Exhaustion: The subterranean tile deck is completely empty and all players have completed their final turn cycle.
  2. Target Wealth Reached: A player hits or exceeds the target point milestone in sprint mode.
  3. Total Evacuation: All miners have successfully exited the mine following a structural collapse warning.

The player with the highest overall Prospecting Net Worth (PNW) is officially declared the Gold King of Sutter Ridge!

Tie-Breakers

If two or more players tie for total points at the end of the game, resolve the tie using the following priority rules:

  1. The player who secured the highest total number of physical Gold Nuggets.
  2. The player with the most remaining Dynamite Tokens.
  3. The player with the fewest active Prospector Miniatures left trapped inside the mountain.

2.9 Rule Clarifications & Prospector Etiquette

  • No Blocking Entrances: Players cannot completely seal off all routes to the Surface Mine Hub. At least one open path to the surface must always remain available or fixable via dynamite.
  • Sharing Tiles: Multiple prospector figures (including rival players) may occupy the same tunnel tile simultaneously. However, mining an ore vein is strictly first-come, first-served!
  • Cart Unloading: Mine Carts cannot be carried onto surface terrain—they must be unloaded at the Surface Hub elevator.
