Free Aliens: Game Description & Official Rulebook

Part I: Game Description

1.1 Overview and Lore

Welcome to Free Aliens, a thrilling, high-stakes science fiction tabletop and digital tactical strategy game that combines spatial pathfinding, grid manipulation, hidden movement, and cooperative stealth dynamics. Set in the distant orbital penal station known as Sector-9 Containment Matrix, players act as intergalactic Freedom Fighters who have infiltrated a high-security extraterrestrial detention facility. Your mission: navigate heavily guarded corridors, disable laser grid barriers, outsmart cybernetic security drones, and free captive alien species before orbital lockdown initiates.

In Free Aliens, players interact with a dynamic, modular grid board representing containment cells, power conduits, vent shafts, and extraction bays. Rather than relying purely on luck or dice rolls, the game emphasizes tactical planning, resource allocation, simultaneous movement prediction, and synergistic team abilities. Each rescued alien species—ranging from telepathic Psylorians to gelatinous Plasma-Forms—joins your team, granting unique abilities that help bypass security systems, breach blast doors, and neutralize warden sentries.

Designed for 1 to 5 players, Free Aliens delivers an exhilarating blend of stealth strategy, risk management, and sci-fi puzzle-solving. Whether played as a solo stealth campaign, a cooperative rescue operation, or an asymmetric competitive duel where one player commands the facility security wardens, Free Aliens provides a deeply immersive, highly replayable tactical adventure.

1.2 Component Inventory

Every standard physical publication or digital interactive edition of Free Aliens includes high-density, beautifully crafted components designed for tactile precision and futuristic visual flair:

  • 1 Modular Sector-9 Grid Board: 16 double-sided tile blocks that can be configured into hundreds of unique facility maps, featuring laser barriers, vent shafts, security hubs, and containment cells.
  • 30 Extraterrestrial Miniatures/Tokens: Highly detailed figures representing 6 unique rescued alien species (Psylorians, Plasma-Forms, Chrono-Mites, Titan-Brutes, Void-Walkers, and Cygnian Engineers).
  • 12 Security Drone & Warden Figures: Cybernetic patrol units, heavy automated sentries, and the facility Chief Warden.
  • 60 Tactical Action Cards: Decks containing movement boosts, hacking codes, cloaking fields, distraction flares, and telepathic surges.
  • 20 Containment Cell Keycards: Acrylic keycard tokens used to unlock multi-tiered alien containment units.
  • 1 Orbital Alarm & Lockdown Tracker: A central tracking module monitoring active alarm levels, patrol alert states, and time remaining until full facility lockdown.
  • 4 Infiltrator Console Dashboards: Personal player consoles tracking health, battery power, rescued alien roster, and inventory slots.

1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design

Free Aliens embraces a dark, futuristic cyber-gothic sci-fi visual style. Modular map tiles feature metallic grating, glowing blue energy conduits, neon warning indicators, and atmospheric shadow gradients. To guarantee complete accessibility for all players, every alien species, keycard tier, and security zone utilizes distinct color palettes paired with bold, debossed geometric icons (e.g., Security Level 1 = Amber Triangle; Security Level 2 = Crimson Diamond; Security Level 3 = Violet Hexagon).

1.4 Core Objectives

The primary objective in Free Aliens is to maneuver your Infiltrators through the Sector-9 facility, breach security containment cells to liberate captive alien species, and guide them safely to the Orbital Extraction Bay before the Orbital Alarm Tracker reaches Maximum Lockdown level.

Points and victory achievements are awarded through:

  1. Rescued Alien Yield: Escorting diverse alien species safely to the extraction point.
  2. Stealth Precision: Completing cell breaches without triggering high-level security alarms.
  3. Warden Neutralization: Safely disabling or distracting security sentries without taking casualties.
  4. Flawless Facility Extraction: Evacuating all Infiltrators and rescued aliens before orbital lockdown initiates.

Part II: Gameplay Instructions

2.1 Core Mechanics & Facility Rules

Mastering Free Aliens requires an understanding of line-of-sight mechanics, alarm management, and species-specific abilities.

Law 1: Line-of-Sight and Stealth Movement

  • Security Drones and Sentries project a forward-facing Conical Vision Line across the grid canvas indicated by glowing vision cones or directional markers.
  • If an Infiltrator or rescued alien enters a cell within a Drone's vision cone without active cloaking, the facility Alarm Level immediately increases by 1 step!
  • Infiltrators can crouch behind cover blocks or move through air vents to bypass sentry vision cones undetected.

Law 2: Alien Rescuing Mechanics

  • To free a captive alien, an Infiltrator must occupy a space adjacent to a Containment Cell, possess a matching Security Keycard, and spend 1 Action Point to hack the cell lock.
  • Once freed, the Alien miniature is placed on the board adjacent to the Infiltrator and added to that player's active roster.

Law 3: Species Synergy Abilities

  • Every freed alien grants the controlling player a unique passive or active ability:
    • Psylorians: Allow telepathic line-of-sight mapping through solid walls.
    • Plasma-Forms: Can squeeze through locked laser doors without taking damage.
    • Titan-Brutes: Can carry injured allies or smash structural cover blocks.
    • Cygnian Engineers: Grant instant keycard hacking speed bonuses.

Law 4: Alarm Progression and Lockdown

  • Every time security is alerted, an alarm token is added to the Orbital Alarm Tracker.
  • Higher alarm levels increase sentry movement speeds, spawn reinforcement drones, and close secondary escape routes!

2.2 Game Setup

  1. Construct the Facility: Assemble the 16 Modular Sector-9 Grid Board tiles into your chosen mission blueprint (e.g., Mission 1: "The Deep Cell Block").
  2. Place Security Assets: Position Security Drones, Sentries, and Laser Barriers onto indicated grid coordinates as depicted in the mission blueprint.
  3. Distribute Containment Cells: Place face-down Alien Containment Tokens into designated cell bays across the board.
  4. Set the Alarm Tracker: Set the Orbital Alarm Tracker marker to Level 0 (Green/Normal State).
  5. Initialize Player Consoles: Each player selects an Infiltrator character dashboard, receives 3 Action Tokens, and draws a starting hand of 4 Tactical Action Cards.
  6. Determine Lead Infiltrator: The player who most recently watched a sci-fi movie, read a space novel, or looked through a telescope takes the first turn. Play proceeds clockwise.

2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play

Succeeding in Free Aliens demands stealth coordination, pathfinding efficiency, and tactical flexibility. Master players rely on four primary tactical principles:

Technique 1: Vent Shaft Flanking

Do not advance down primary security corridors unless absolutely necessary! Use ventilation shafts to bypass heavily guarded choke points and drop directly into security control rooms behind drone sentries.

Technique 2: Early Keycard Hoarding

Focus early turns on hacking terminals and collecting high-tier keycards before raising the facility alarm level. Trying to hack high-security doors during an active Lockdown alarm is significantly more difficult!

Technique 3: Alien Ability Chaining

Synergize alien abilities! For example, use a Psylorian's telepathy to scout behind a locked door, send a Plasma-Form through the keyhole to disable the door's internal power switch, and let a Titan-Brute carry low-speed aliens through the open doorway.

Technique 4: Controlled Distractions

Use noise-maker tokens or hacking lures to intentionally draw security sentries away from containment bays, opening clear extraction routes for your rescue team.

2.4 Structure of a Play Session

A standard round of Free Aliens proceeds through three distinct, sequential phases:

  1. Phase 1: Infiltrator Phase (Player Turns)
    • Each player spends their 3 Action Points to perform available actions:
      • Move: Shift 1 grid space (Orthogonal).
      • Hack/Unlock: Spend a Keycard to open a cell or blast door.
      • Rescue: Liberate an alien from an unlocked containment cell.
      • Use Ability: Activate a character card or freed alien ability.
      • Play Tactical Card: Deploy stealth gear or hacking boosts.
  2. Phase 2: Security & Drone Phase (Automated AI Phase)
    • Security Drones shift along designated patrol routes by a number of grid spaces determined by the current Alarm Level.
    • Sentries scan for line-of-sight targets. Any detected player increases the Alarm Tracker!
    • If Alarm Level is at Crimson or higher, spawn reinforcement units at active elevator hubs.
  3. Phase 3: Facility Maintenance & Alarm Audit
    • Check for lockdown expiration clocks, refresh player action tokens, and draw 1 Tactical Action Card from the deck.

2.5 Alien Species & Ability Matrix

Alien Species Base Movement Unique Species Power Extraction Value
Psylorian 3 Spaces Telepathic Wall Scan (Reveals adjacent hidden cells) 250 Points
Plasma-Form 4 Spaces Phase Shift (Passes through locked doors) 300 Points
Titan-Brute 2 Spaces Heavy Carrier (Carries slow allies; destroys barriers) 350 Points
Cygnian Engineer 3 Spaces Master Hacking (Unlocks security doors without keycards) 400 Points
Chrono-Mite 5 Spaces Time Shift (Grants 1 extra action point to nearby allies) 450 Points
Void-Walker 4 Spaces Shadow Cloak (Immune to Drone vision cones while stationary) 500 Points

2.6 Game Modes

2.6.1 Cooperative Liberation (1 to 4 Players - Co-Op Campaign)

The primary game mode. Players work together as a team of Infiltrators to liberate a target number of alien species and reach the extraction bay before the facility goes into complete lockdown.

2.6.2 Warden Infiltration (2 to 5 Players - Asymmetric Competitive)

  • Setup: One player assumes the role of the Facility Chief Warden, controlling all security drones, sentries, hazards, and lockdown doors.
  • Gameplay: The remaining players act as Infiltrators trying to rescue aliens, while the Warden player plays tactical trap cards to catch the Infiltrators.
  • Victory: Infiltrators win if they extract 4 aliens; the Warden wins if all Infiltrators are captured or lockdown expires.

2.6.3 Solo Infiltrator (1 Player - Stealth Challenge)

A tense solo puzzle mode where a single player commands two Infiltrators attempting to clear complex, pre-set security layouts with strict move limits and zero alarm tolerance.

2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix

At the conclusion of a rescue operation, final team scores are calculated on the Extraction Ledger:

  • Total Alien Rescue Points: Cumulative score earned from all species successfully escorted to the Extraction Bay.
  • Stealth Bonus: $+500$ Points if the entire mission was completed without raising the Alarm Level to Crimson.
  • Undetected Escape Bonus: $+300$ Points for every Infiltrator who extracted with full health.
  • Lockdown Penalty: Subtract 200 Points for every turn elapsed after the Orbital Alarm Tracker reaches Warning status.

2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions

A game of Free Aliens officially concludes upon reaching any of the following resolution triggers:

  1. Successful Extraction (Victory): All Infiltrators and their rescued alien allies reach the Orbital Extraction Bay and activate the escape pod.
  2. Facility Lockdown (Defeat): The Orbital Alarm Tracker reaches Maximum Level 10, sealing all blast doors and capturing all remaining units on the board.
  3. Infiltrator Elimination (Defeat): All player Infiltrators lose their health points due to sentry fire or security hazards.

The team with the highest overall score at extraction earns the title of Grand Liberators of Sector-9!

2.9 Rule Clarifications & Tactical Etiquette

  • Shared Keycard Pool: Players in cooperative mode may freely trade Keycards and Tactical Action Cards if their Infiltrator miniatures occupy adjacent grid spaces.
  • Carrying Slow Aliens: Rescued aliens with low base movement speeds (such as Titan-Brutes) can be escorted by faster Infiltrators, adopting the Infiltrator's movement rate if moving together.
  • Door State Memory: Once a blast door or containment cell is hacked open, it remains open for the rest of the game unless a security drone explicitly spends an action to re-lock it.
