Downhill

Part I: Game Description

1.1 Overview and Lore

Welcome to Downhill, a high-octane, adrenaline-fueled extreme sports board game that captures the sheer velocity, danger, and tactical maneuvering of downhill mountain bike racing and winter alpine freeriding. Set across towering, treacherous mountain peaks—from the razor-sharp granite cliffs of the Alpine Scree to the dense, muddy pine lines of the Pacific Northwest—players step into the worn leather boots of elite extreme sports athletes competing in the world’s most dangerous downhill descent championship.

In Downhill, players race against time, terrain, and each other to descend a dynamically constructed, multi-tiered mountain track. Unlike traditional racing board games that rely solely on simple die rolls, Downhill introduces an innovative Momentum & Kinetic Friction System. Every choice on the mountain comes down to gravity, risk management, and momentum conservation. Descending steep drops accelerates your rider to terrifying speeds, granting incredible movement distance but drastically reducing steering control and making tight hairpin turns near fatal. Conversely, scrubbing speed through heavy braking or tactical sliding allows for precise navigation around rockfalls, tree roots, and sudden cliff drop-offs, but costs precious seconds against the clock.

Designed for 1 to 5 players, Downhill delivers an intense tactical race experience featuring dynamic weather shifts, sudden gear failures, custom athlete builds, and breathtaking aerial tricks over massive canyon gaps. Whether carving smooth lines down powdery slopes or throwing caution to the wind to pull off a 360-flip over a chasm for bonus speed boosts, Downhill offers an unforgettable tabletop rush where glory and catastrophic wipeouts sit just millimeters apart.

1.2 Component Inventory

Every standard edition of Downhill comes fully equipped with a suite of durable, high-contrast components built to withstand high-speed tabletop action:

  • 1 Modular Mountain Board System: 6 double-sided, heavy-cardstock mountain slope sectors (Alpine Peak, Pine Forest, Rock Scree, Glacier Chasm, Muddy Ridge, Finish Line Basin) that clip together to form thousands of unique downhill track variations.
  • 5 Custom Painted Miniature Riders: Highly detailed plastic miniatures representing unique athlete archetypes (The Speed Demon, The Technical Specialist, The Trickster, The Endurance Line-Finder, The Reckless Charger).
  • 5 Athlete Control Dashboards: Dual-layer player boards equipped with recessed tracks for tracking Velocity (Speed Units), Stamina, Bike/Board Integrity, and Adrenaline Charges.
  • 100 Kinetic Trajectory Cards: A central deck used for line navigation, emergency maneuvers, speed modification, and trick execution.
  • 30 Terrain Hazard Tokens: Physical markers representing mud patches, loose gravel, exposed roots, icy patches, and fallen logs.
  • 5 Precision Gear & Brake Dial Assemblies: Adjustable mechanical dials attached to player dashboards for secretly locking in gear ratios and braking strength during movement phases.
  • 1 Weather & Surface Conditions Gauge: A tracking dial adjusting environmental variables such as heavy snow, pouring rain, loose scree, or high winds across sectors.
  • 12 Custom Velocity Dice: Color-coded dice (3 Blue Control Dice, 3 Yellow Speed Dice, 3 Red Hazard Dice, 3 Purple Trick Dice) rolled during risk checks and extreme maneuvers.

1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design

Downhill features a bold, high-contrast aesthetic inspired by modern outdoor extreme sports photography and architectural topographic maps. Terrain sectors are overlaid with faint, clean topographic contour lines that visually dictate slope steepness ($0^\circ$ flat flats, $15^\circ$ moderate drops, $30^\circ$ steep descents, and $45^\circ+$ vertical drops).

To ensure high-speed clarity during tense racing turns:

  • Color-Coded Racing Lines: Every track lane features distinct color-coded vector borders (Green = Safe/Technical Line, Yellow = High-Speed/Medium-Risk Line, Red = Pro/Extreme-Risk Line).
  • Universal Iconography: Terrain hazards and jump ramps feature universally accessible graphic emblems alongside raised surface textures.

1.4 Core Objectives

The primary objective in Downhill is to navigate your rider from the summit starting gate down to the valley finish line in the lowest total Time Equivalent (TE) while avoiding fatal wipeouts and mechanical destruction.

Race standings and performance are evaluated through:

  1. Crossing Order & Recorded Time: Finishing first or achieving the lowest time score across timed solo or multi-heat runs.
  2. Adrenaline & Style Bonuses: Deducting seconds from your final time by successfully executing dangerous aerial stunts off cliff jumps and ramps.
  3. Rider Integrity: Finishing the race with your bike/board intact and your rider’s stamina above total exhaustion.

Part II: Gameplay Instructions

2.1 Core Mechanics & Kinetic Laws

Mastering Downhill requires a thorough understanding of momentum accumulation, braking dynamics, line choice, and risk checks.

Law 1: Gravity & Velocity Accumulation

  • A rider’s movement distance per turn is governed primarily by their current Velocity (Speed Units), tracked on their Athlete Dashboard.
  • Gravitational Acceleration: Entering a tile with a downward topographic slope automatically increases your Velocity without consuming Stamina or cards:
    • Moderate Slope ($15^\circ$): $+1$ Velocity Unit.
    • Steep Slope ($30^\circ$): $+2$ Velocity Units.
    • Vertical Drop ($45^\circ+$): $+3$ Velocity Units.
  • Velocity Persistence: Unlike flat racing games where speed resets each turn, Velocity in Downhill carries over completely into the next turn unless reduced by braking, terrain friction, or turns.

Law 2: The Inertia & Steering Strain Rule

  • Higher speeds make changing lanes and making sharp turns significantly harder.
  • To change lanes or execute a turn on the track, a rider must pay Steering Strain equal to their current Velocity category:
    • Low Speed (1–3 Units): 0 Strain required; free movement across adjacent lanes.
    • Medium Speed (4–6 Units): Requires spending 1 Stamina point or playing 1 Line Card per lane shift.
    • High Speed (7–9 Units): Requires passing a Control Risk Check (rolling Blue Control Dice) to shift lanes or make hairpin turns. Failure results in a drift into the outer track wall or hazard!
    • Terminal Velocity (10+ Units): The rider must move in a straight line along their current momentum vector unless emergency scrub braking is applied.

Law 3: Scrub Braking & Heat Accumulation

  • A player can reduce their Velocity during the Adjust Phase by dialing in Scrub Braking on their Gear Assembly.
  • Every unit of Velocity reduced through heavy braking generates Brake Heat/Wear on their dashboard. Exceeding your bike/board's maximum brake tolerance triggers mechanical failure or tire blowouts!

Law 4: Hazards, Wipeouts, and Recovery

  • Entering a hazard space (e.g., loose rocks, mud, wet roots) forces an immediate Hazard Risk Check using Red Hazard Dice.
  • Wipeouts: Failing a Risk Check causes a Wipeout. The rider miniature tumbles, Velocity instantly drops to 0, Stamina/Integrity points are lost based on speed at impact, and the rider loses 1 full turn recovering and standing up.

2.2 Game Setup

  1. Assemble the Mountain Track: Clip together 4 to 6 Mountain Sector boards in your desired sequence (or follow a blueprint from the Track Codex, such as The Devil’s Ridge or Glacier Pass).
  2. Set Up Hazards & Ramps: Place hazard tokens and jump ramp tiles face-down onto the designated track hexes as indicated by the track layout blueprint.
  3. Choose Athletes & Dashboards: Each player selects an Athlete Mini and matching Control Dashboard. Set starting indicators:
    • Velocity: Set to $0$.
    • Stamina: Set to Maximum ($10$).
    • Equipment Integrity: Set to Maximum ($10$).
    • Adrenaline: Set to $0$.
  4. Draw Starting Trajectory Cards: Shuffle the Kinetic Trajectory Deck and deal 4 cards to each player's secret hand.
  5. Initialize Weather: Roll the Weather Gauge to set global surface conditions (e.g., Dry Hardpack, Loose Mud, or Ice Patch).
  6. Position at the Start Gate: Place all rider miniatures in the summit starting stalls. Determine starting order via a high-roll setup on a Blue Control Die.

2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Logic

Succeeding in Downhill requires balancing raw speed with survival management. Master riders rely on four core tactical strategies:

Technique 1: Apex Line Cutting

Do not simply take the shortest physical path down the mountain! Align your rider toward the "Apex Line" (Green vector path). Entering a sharp corner along the proper apex line reduces steering strain penalties by $50\%$, allowing you to maintain high speed through hairpins without rolling hazard dice.

Technique 2: Tactical Speed Scrubbing

Never enter a sector containing dense hazards or tight turns at Terminal Velocity ($10+$ units) unless you hold emergency Trajectory Cards in hand. Scrub 2 to 3 units of speed on the approach tile so you can maneuver precisely around tree roots and boulders.

Technique 3: Airtime Acceleration & Style Time Deduction

Hitting jump ramps at high speed launches your rider into the air, completely bypassing all ground-based hazard tiles beneath your flight path! Successfully pulling off tricks using Purple Trick Dice while airborne deducts raw seconds from your final finish time.

Technique 4: Slipstreaming & Draft Passing

Positioning your rider directly behind a competitor in a high-speed straightaway allows you to Draft. Drafted riders consume zero Stamina while matching the lead rider's Velocity, allowing you to slingshot past them into the next corner!

2.4 Structure of an Active Play Turn

A standard round in Downhill progresses through four continuous operational phases:

  1. Phase 1: Acceleration & Braking Planning (Secret Dialing)
    • All players simultaneously lock in their gear ratios and brake settings on their hidden dashboard dials.
    • Players declare whether they are pushing Stamina for extra acceleration or scrubbing speed.
  2. Phase 2: Trajectory & Card Declaration
    • In turn order (determined by current speed, fastest rider going first), players play Trajectory Cards from their hand to modify movement vectors, execute leans, or prep aerial stunts.
  3. Phase 3: High-Speed Movement & Hazard Resolution
    • Move rider miniatures forward hex-by-hex equal to final calculated Velocity.
    • Apply slope gravity bonuses as downward elevation changes occur.
    • Roll required Control or Hazard Dice when crossing rough terrain, sharp turns, or jump ramps.
  4. Phase 4: Turn End & Hand Maintenance
    • Update dashboard stats (Brake Wear, Stamina, Adrenaline).
    • Discard used cards and draw back up to hand limit (4 cards).

2.5 Hazard & Surface Condition Matrix

Hazard / Surface Impact on Velocity Risk Check Type Effect of Failed Check
Loose Scree / Gravel $-1$ Velocity per tile Red Hazard Die (1-2 Fail) Loss of steering control; drift 1 tile outward
Exposed Pine Roots No velocity change Red Hazard Die (1-3 Fail) Instant Wipeout; $-2$ Bike Integrity
Deep Mud Patch $-3$ Velocity instantly Blue Control Die (1 Fail) Stalls momentum; Velocity drops to 1
Glacier Ice Sheet Velocity locked (cannot brake) Red Hazard Die (1-4 Fail) Uncontrollable skid; slide straight into wall
Cliff Jump Ramp $+2$ Velocity on launch Purple Trick Die (Optional) Successful trick = $-5$ Seconds Time Bonus; Fail = Catastrophic Crash

2.6 Game Modes

2.6.1 Downhill World Cup (Multi-Stage Championship Campaign)

Players race across a series of 4 distinct mountain tracks (e.g., Alpine Sprint, Forest Slalom, Rock Face Drop, Valley Final). Scores, bike upgrades, and rider injuries carry over between stages.

2.6.2 Time Attack Sprint (1 Player - Solo Mode)

  • Gameplay: A single player races against a ghost clock on a pre-set track layout.
  • Goal: Achieve a sub-2-minute finish time while maximizing trick style points and avoiding wipeouts.

2.6.3 Elimination Downhill (3 to 5 Players - Survival Knockout)

  • At the end of every mountain sector board, the rider in last place is eliminated from the race until only the supreme mountain champion remains!

2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Metrics

In competitive championship and timed modes, final placements are determined using the Downhill Official Time Ledger:

$$\text{Final Race Time} = \text{Base Track Time} + \text{Wipeout Penalties} - \text{Trick & Style Bonuses}$$

  • Base Track Time: Turn count multiplied by 10 seconds.
  • Wipeout Penalty: $+15$ Seconds added to your total time per crash.
  • Extreme Trick Bonus: $-5$ to $-10$ Seconds deducted per successful cliff-jump stunt.
  • Clean Line Bonus: $-10$ Seconds awarded for completing the mountain without taking any damage or wiping out.

2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions

A race of Downhill officially terminates upon reaching one of the following resolution triggers:

  1. Finish Line Crossing (Standard Victory): The first player to cross the finish line in the basin triggers the final round. Remaining players complete their turn to calculate their final adjusted race times.
  2. Total Equipment / Athlete Attrition (Defeat): If a rider’s Stamina or Bike Integrity drops to 0 due to repeated heavy crashes, they are forced to DNF (Did Not Finish) the race.

The athlete with the lowest final calculated race time claims the Gold Medal and earns the title of Downhill Mountain King!

2.9 Field Rules & Racing Etiquette

  • Contact & Elbows Rule: When two riders enter the same hex at speeds of 6+ Velocity, a Mid-Air Collision Check triggers! Both riders must spend 1 Stamina or roll Blue Control Dice to avoid knocking each other down.
  • Irreversible Line Selection: Once a miniature has been moved forward onto a vector tile line, the path cannot be retraced or adjusted.
  • Visible Velocity: All player dashboard stats, gear dials, and Velocity tracks must remain fully visible to all competitors at all times.
