Car Match: Game Description & Official Rulebook

Part I: Game Description

1.1 Overview and Lore

Welcome to Car Match, a high-octane, visually vibrant, and deeply strategic mechanics-and-traffic puzzle game. Set in the bustling metropolis of Gearshift City, players take on the role of Master Traffic Dispatchers and Fleet Operators tasked with managing overcrowded parking lots, clearing intricate multi-lane traffic jams, and organizing diverse vehicle fleets into matching transport convoys.

Car Match revitalizes the classic 3D tile-matching and parking-jam puzzle genres by integrating dynamic vehicle physics, spatial parking constraints, color-coded multi-car merging, and special emergency vehicle mechanics. Rather than simply clicking static tiles, players must navigate intricate, multi-layered parking lots filled with sports cars, SUVs, delivery vans, electric hypercars, and emergency vehicles. To clear a vehicle from the grid, players must maneuver it along an unblocked path into a 7-slot holding bay. Loading three vehicles of matching model and color into the holding bay triggers an instant Fleet Dispatch, clearing the cars from the staging area and freeing up critical holding capacity for complex multi-tier parking maneuvers.

Designed for 1 to 4 players, Car Match offers a versatile selection of play modes: from a casual, relaxing solo puzzle campaign with over 100 uniquely designed city intersection layouts, to high-stakes competitive head-to-head duels where quick spatial scanning and strategic slot management determine who can clear their lot first. With its glossy, miniature-style 3D vehicle components, satisfying mechanical audio feedback, and balanced mix of spatial navigation and set collection, Car Match delivers an endlessly engaging tabletop and digital puzzle experience.

Mahjong Match features a crisp, high-contrast toy-box automotive visual aesthetic. Smooth, metallic-painted vehicle bodies contrast sharply with dark asphalt grid tiles and bright white lane markings. To guarantee 100% universal accessibility and color-blind compatibility, every vehicle miniature features distinct roof symbols and bold chassis decals alongside its color finish, allowing players to instantly identify matches by model silhouette, roof icon, or color tone.

1.4 Core Objectives

The primary objective in Car Match is to maneuver unblocked vehicles out of overcrowded parking lots and driver lanes into the 7-slot Fleet Holding Bay, matching three identical vehicles (same color and class) to dispatch them, clear the lot, and accumulate the highest score before the holding bay becomes completely blocked.

Points and performance are evaluated through:

  1. Successful Fleet Dispatches: Matching three identical vehicles in the holding bay to trigger an immediate convoy departure.
  2. Multi-Dispatch Combo Chains: Triggering back-to-back matches within a single turn sequence.
  3. Emergency Tow Clears: Utilizing utility vehicles to eliminate severe traffic bottlenecks.
  4. Grid Clearance Efficiency: Clearing all vehicles from the main grid using the fewest total moves possible.

Part II: Gameplay Instructions

2.1 Core Mechanics & Spatial Laws

Mastering Car Match requires a firm understanding of driving path vectoring, vehicle size dimensions, holding bay slot management, and collision logic.

Law 1: The Law of the Clear Driving Path

  • A vehicle on the parking grid is Blocked and cannot be moved if another vehicle directly obstructs its bumper in its forward or backward driving direction.
  • A vehicle is Unblocked (Free to Drive) only if a continuous, clear path of empty grid tiles leads from its current position directly to one of the perimeter road exits connected to the Fleet Holding Bay.
  • Vehicles can only drive in straight lines along grid rows and columns; they cannot drive diagonally or clip through adjacent parked vehicles.

Law 2: The 7-Slot Holding Bay Limit

  • Selecting an unblocked vehicle causes it to drive off the lot and park in the first available open slot in your 7-Slot Fleet Holding Bay.
  • The holding bay holds a maximum of 7 vehicles at any given time.
  • Gridlock Game-Over: If all 7 slots in your holding bay become filled with non-matching vehicles, no further moves can be made. You suffer an immediate Gridlock Penalty, and your turn or round ends.

Law 3: The Three-of-a-Kind Dispatch Rule

  • Whenever three identical vehicles (matching in both class silhouette and color) occupy slots within the holding bay, they instantly merge into a convoy and drive off the board!
  • The three matching vehicles are removed from the holding bay, immediately freeing up three open slots for subsequent parking maneuvers.
  • Matching vehicles do not need to enter the holding bay in consecutive order; the bay automatically sorts incoming vehicles by color and class.

Law 4: Heavy Vehicle Dimensions & Turning Radiuses

  • SUVs & Delivery Vans: These large vehicles occupy two adjacent linear grid spaces. To move a heavy vehicle, both grid spaces along its driving vector must be completely clear of obstacles.
  • Exotic Hypercars: Hypercars function as universal wildcards. Placing an Exotic Hypercar into a holding bay alongside two identical matching cars completes the set and triggers an instant dispatch.

2.2 Game Setup

  1. Set Up the Central City Mat: Lay the neoprene grid mat flat in the middle of the play area.
  2. Select a Parking Blueprint: Choose a setup diagram from the Codex (e.g., Downtown Bottleneck, Multi-Level Deck, or Rush Hour Crossroad).
  3. Populate the Parking Lot: Place vehicle miniatures face-up onto the designated grid spaces, stacking multi-level deck tiles where indicated by the blueprint.
  4. Distribute Dashboards & Tokens: Hand each player a Dispatcher Dashboard Rack and 10,000 points in Fleet Credit Tokens.
  5. Set Up Reserve Tow Trucks: Place the Emergency Tow Truck miniatures in the designated service station zone adjacent to the grid.
  6. Determine Lead Dispatcher: The player who most recently drove a car or possesses the sharpest spatial vision takes the Master Traffic Signal Token and goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.

2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play

Succeeding in Car Match requires rigorous holding bay management, layer planning, and bottleneck priority control. Master dispatchers rely on four core tactical principles:

Technique 1: Holding Bay Capacity Cushioning

Never fill your holding bay beyond 4 or 5 slots unless you are guaranteed to complete a 3-car match on your next move! Always keep 2 to 3 slots open as a safety buffer for clearing temporary roadblock vehicles.

Technique 2: Bottleneck Key Car Identification

Analyze the parking lot layout to locate "Key Vehicles"—single cars that block long lines or multi-car stacks behind them. Prioritize freeing Key Vehicles early, even if it requires temporarily storing an unmatched car in your holding bay.

Technique 3: Layered Stack Extraction

On multi-level parking deck layouts, vehicles on lower tiers remain locked until the top-tier vehicles directly above them are driven away. Clear top-layer vehicles as early as possible to reveal hidden car models underneath.

Technique 4: Wildcard Hypercar Preservation

Save Exotic Hypercars in your holding bay or on the grid for situations where two matching high-tier vehicles are trapped behind difficult bottlenecks. Using a wildcard to clear a pair instantly reopens your holding bay capacity.

2.4 Structure of a Play Session

A standard turn in Car Match progresses through four structured phases:

  1. Phase 1: Grid Inspection & Path Analysis
    • Scan the parking lot matrix to identify all unblocked vehicles that have a clear driving path to a perimeter road exit.
  2. Phase 2: Vehicle Selection & Extraction
    • Select 1 unblocked vehicle from the grid. Move it along its exit path and place it into an open slot in your Fleet Holding Bay.
  3. Phase 3: Automatic Match Check & Dispatch
    • Check the holding bay. If three identical vehicles are present, execute an immediate Fleet Dispatch!
    • Remove the three matching vehicles, return them to the fleet box, and claim your dispatch points.
  4. Phase 4: Combo Evaluation & Turn Handover
    • If a dispatch creates space that allows an immediate follow-up match, resolve the bonus chain.
    • If your holding bay still has available slots, you may elect to take an additional move or end your turn and pass play clockwise.

2.5 Vehicle Classification & Point Scoring Matrix

Vehicle Class & Silhouette Grid Size Matching Requirement Base Dispatch Value Special Class Feature
Compact City Car 1 Grid Space 3 Identical Colors 100 Points Quick extraction; easy turning
Electric Sedan 1 Grid Space 3 Identical Colors 200 Points Yields $+100$ Bonus on combo matches
Heavy SUV 2 Grid Spaces 3 Identical Colors 400 Points Clears 2 grid spaces upon exit
Delivery Van 2 Grid Spaces 3 Identical Colors 600 Points Unlocks underlying cargo tokens
Exotic Hypercar 1 Grid Space Wildcard (Matches Any 2) 1,000 Points Functions as universal set match
Emergency Tow Truck 1 Grid Space Utility (No Match Needed) 300 Points Instantly removes any 1 blocked car

2.6 Game Modes

2.6.1 Master Dispatcher Sprint (1 to 4 Players - Competitive Strategy)

Players compete on a shared parking lot grid. Each player takes turns extracting vehicles into their personal holding bay. The player who dispatches the highest total point value of vehicle fleets before the entire lot is cleared wins the match.

2.6.2 Traffic Jam Battle (2 Players - Real-Time Head-to-Head)

  • Setup: Played with two identical side-by-side parking lot grids!
  • Gameplay: Players race simultaneously in real time to clear their lots. Completing a 3-car match on your grid allows you to send a "Traffic Block" obstacle token onto your opponent's board, temporary locking one of their driving lanes.
  • Victory: The first player to completely clear their parking grid wins!

2.6.3 Rush Hour Challenge (1 Player - Solo Puzzle Campaign)

  • Gameplay: A single player attempts to clear increasingly complex parking lot puzzles within strict move limits, striving to achieve 3-star gold ratings across 100 campaign levels.

2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix

At the conclusion of a game, scores are calculated on the Dispatcher Ledger:

  • Dispatch Base Score: Sum of all point values earned from dispatched vehicle sets as detailed in the Scoring Matrix.
  • Multi-Dispatch Combo Bonus: $+300$ Bonus Points for triggering two dispatches within a single turn sequence; $+800$ Points for three consecutive dispatches.
  • Perfect Lot Clear Bonus: $+5,000$ Points for removing every single vehicle from the grid without filling all 7 holding bay slots.
  • Remaining Utility Bonus: $+500$ Points for each unused Emergency Tow Truck token remaining at game end.
  • Gridlock Penalty: Subtract 1,000 Points if your holding bay becomes completely full with no valid matches available.

2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions

A game of Car Match officially ends upon reaching any of the following resolution triggers:

  1. Total Grid Clearance: Every vehicle on the central grid mat has been successfully matched and dispatched.
  2. Universal Gridlock: All participating players have filled their 7-slot Fleet Holding Bays with no valid 3-car matches available, causing a complete traffic stand-still.
  3. Campaign Target Reached: A player achieves the required point threshold in single-player or scenario mode.

The traffic dispatcher who accumulates the highest total score is officially crowned the Grand Marshal of Gearshift City!

2.9 Rule Clarifications & City Etiquette

  • Touch and Drive Rule: Once a player touches an unblocked vehicle on the grid, that vehicle must be selected and driven to the holding bay during that turn.
  • No Diagonal Nudging: Vehicles must strictly follow grid lines; diagonal cuts through parking stall corners are illegal maneuvers.
  • Visible Holding Bays: Players must keep all vehicles in their 7-slot holding bays fully visible to all opponents at all times during play.
