Candy Mahjong
Candy Mahjong: Game Description & Official Rulebook
Part I: Game Description
1.1 Overview and Lore
Welcome to Candy Mahjong, a vibrant, sugar-coated reimagining of the classic ancient tile-matching tradition. Set within the whimsical, pastel-hued kingdom of Sugarlandia, players step into the sweet shoes of Master Confectioners competing to deconstruct intricate multi-layered candy towers, match mouth-watering confectionery suits, and assemble delightful sugar sets.
Candy Mahjong blends the relaxing spatial logic of traditional Mahjong with dynamic confectionery mechanics. Players navigate multi-tiered arrangements of heavy, candy-engraved tiles—from Gummy Bears and Chocolate Bars to Lollipops and Jellybeans. Rather than relying on standard suit numbers alone, Candy Mahjong introduces tactical sugar rushes, wrapper pops, frosting locks, and color-swapping sprinkles. To harvest a tile, it must be Unblocked (free along at least one long edge and completely uncovered from above), forcing players to think several steps ahead to unearth rare Candy Honor tiles and construct high-scoring sugar matches.
Designed for 1 to 4 players, Candy Mahjong delivers a versatile gaming experience: from a tranquil, meditative solo puzzle journey across 60 sweet campaign layouts to high-stakes competitive duels where rival confectioners race to claim limited bonus tiles, trigger explosive chain-reaction cleans, and complete 14-tile winning dessert hands. With its glossy, tactile tile components, vivid candy iconography, and rich balance of spatial strategy and set collection, Candy Mahjong offers a delicious tabletop experience for players of all ages.

1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design
Candy Mahjong features a bright, high-contrast pastel bakery aesthetic. The glossy porcelain-white tile faces contrast beautifully with candy-pink and sky-blue tile backs. To ensure 100% universal accessibility and complete color-blind compatibility, every tile features standard Western numerals and flavor icons alongside traditional Chinese calligraphy, accompanied by distinct geometric border patterns for easy identification.
1.4 Core Objectives
The primary objective in Candy Mahjong is to unblock, match, and claim identical candy tiles to assemble a complete 14-Tile Dessert Hand consisting of four 3-tile sets (Pongs or Chows) and one matching Pair, or to score the highest total points in Sugar Rush Sprint mode.
Points are awarded through:
- Matched Pair Claims: Successfully unblocking and claiming two identical, free candy tiles from the layout.
- Meld Construction: Combining claimed pairs with newly harvested tiles to form 3-tile sets (Pongs: 3 identical tiles; Chows: 3 sequential tiles of the same suit).
- Honor Cupcake Bonuses: Completing sets of rare Royal Cupcake or Flavor Wind tiles.
- Cascading Clears: Claiming multiple matching pairs sequentially without breaking your turn streak.
Part II: Gameplay Instructions
2.1 Core Mechanics & Spatial Laws
Mastering Candy Mahjong requires strict adherence to spatial tile movement, unblocking rules, and hand assembly laws.
Law 1: The Law of Tile Unblocking (Freedom State)
- A tile on the central grid is Blocked and cannot be selected, touched, or claimed if it is covered by any tile from a higher layer, OR if BOTH its left and right long edges are directly pressed against adjacent neighbor tiles.
- A tile is Unblocked (Free) only if its top face is completely uncovered AND at least one of its long side edges (left or right) is entirely clear of neighboring tiles.
- Only Unblocked tiles may be selected to form matches.
Law 2: The Two-Tile Matching Rule
- On their turn, a player selects one Unblocked tile from the grid and places it onto their Confectioner Rack holding zone.
- The player then selects a second Unblocked tile from the grid.
- If the two tiles match identically: The player locks the pair into their active scoring rack and immediately gains an extra action turn.
- If the two tiles do NOT match: The move is invalid. The second tile cannot be claimed, and the first selected tile must be returned to its exact original position on the board. Turn ends and play passes clockwise.
Law 3: Stealing & Melding Mechanics
- Tiles claimed onto your rack can be combined into standard Mahjong combinations:
- Sweet Pair: 2 identical tiles (e.g., two 5-Gummy Bears).
- Sugar Pong: 3 identical tiles (e.g., three Red Velvet Cupcakes).
- Confection Chow: 3 numerically sequential tiles of the same suit (e.g., 4-Chocolate Coins, 5-Chocolate Bonbons, 6-Chocolate Wafers).
- Stealing Exposed Tiles: If an opponent unblocks and claims a tile that completes a 3-tile Sugar Pong set with a pair already sitting exposed on your display rack, you may declare "Sugar Pong!", steal the tile out of turn, add the completed set to your rack, and take the next turn!
Law 4: Sugar Rush Cascades
- Removing matched tiles unblocks lower and interior tiles in the multi-layered layout!
- As upper tiers are cleared, previously trapped tiles become unblocked, opening new visual pathways and unlocking critical scoring opportunities.
2.2 Game Setup
- Select a Layout Blueprint: Choose a grid layout from the Codex (e.g., The Gingerbread Castle, Sugar Pyramid, or Sundae Mountain).
- Shuffle & Construct the Grid: Shuffle all 144 tiles face-down. Assemble the layout face-up according to the blueprint, stacking tiles in precise layered tiers.
- Distribute Racks & Tokens: Give each player a Confectioner Rack and 10,000 points in Sugar Crystal scoring tokens.
- Set the Chef Marker: Place the Candy Cane Chef token beside Player 1 to mark the starting baker.
- Begin the Feast: Player 1 inspects the unblocked perimeter of the layout and makes their opening pair selection.
2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play
Succeeding in Candy Mahjong requires systematic layer management, visual planning, and set preservation. Master bakers rely on four primary tactical principles:
Technique 1: Top-Tier Deconstruction
Always prioritize clearing tiles from the highest layers first! Removing top-layer tiles unblocks multiple lower-tier tiles simultaneously, giving you broader access to hidden suits beneath the structure.
Technique 2: Choke-Point Unblocking
Focus on freeing tiles that lock long horizontal rows. Removing a single tile located at a critical choke point can instantly unblock 3 or 4 adjacent tiles, dramatically expanding your available matching choices.
Technique 3: Honor Tile Hoarding
Keep a close watch on Royal Cupcake and Flavor Wind tiles! Because Honor tiles yield massive bonus points when completed as Pongs, claim them immediately whenever they become unblocked, even if it delays completing a basic suit Chow.
Technique 4: Strategic Holding
If you hold a pair on your rack and see the third matching tile unblocked on the board, wait for an opponent to open up neighboring areas before claiming it, using your extra turn bonus at the most opportune tactical moment!
2.4 Structure of a Play Session
A standard turn in Candy Mahjong progresses through four structured phases:
- Phase 1: Grid Inspection & Freedom Check
- The active player scans the layout to identify all currently Unblocked face-up tiles along the outer edges and upper layers.
- Phase 2: First Tile Selection
- Select 1 unblocked tile from the board and move it to your rack’s staging area.
- Phase 3: Second Tile Selection & Match Validation
- Select a 2nd unblocked tile from the board.
- Match Valid: Place the matched pair into your display rack. Check if the claim completes a 14-tile hand. If so, call "Candy Mahjong!"
- Match Invalid: Return the tiles to their original board positions, ending your turn.
- Phase 4: Turn Continuation or Handover
- If a valid match was made, take an immediate bonus turn!
- If no valid match was made, pass play clockwise to the next baker.

2.6 Game Modes
2.6.1 Master Confectioner Hand Builder (2 to 4 Players - Competitive Strategy)
Players collect pairs to build a complete 14-tile winning hand (4 Melds + 1 Pair). The first player to complete a valid 14-tile hand calls "Candy Mahjong!" and collects Sugar Crystals from all opponents based on hand difficulty.
2.6.2 Sugar Rush Sprint (1 to 4 Players - Fast Arcade)
- Setup: Construct a flat or 2-layer 144-tile layout.
- Gameplay: Players take alternating turns matching pairs as fast as possible. No hand building is required; every claimed pair immediately grants direct points.
- Victory: The player with the highest total points when the entire board is cleared wins the match!
2.6.3 Sugarlandia Solo Quest (1 Player - Meditative Puzzle)
- Gameplay: A single player attempts to clear complex 3D candy layouts within a set turn limit, clearing the board 100% to earn 3-star chef ratings.
2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix
At the end of a match, scores are recorded on the Confectionery Ledger:
- Hand Completion Base: $+5,000$ Points for declaring a valid 14-tile Candy Mahjong hand.
- Honor Set Bonuses: Extra points added for completed Cupcake or Flavor Wind Pongs as detailed in the Scoring Matrix.
- Sugar Rush Streak: $+200$ Bonus Points for every extra turn chained together through back-to-back successful matches.
- Blocked Tile Penalty: Subtract 100 Points if a player attempts to touch or select a tile that is blocked by neighbor rules.
2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions
A game of Candy Mahjong officially concludes upon reaching any of the following resolution triggers:
- Declaration of Candy Mahjong (Victory): A player completes a valid 14-tile hand on their Confectioner Rack and calls "Candy Mahjong!"
- Total Layout Clear: All 144 tiles are successfully matched and cleared from the board matrix.
- No Valid Moves Stalemate: All remaining unblocked tiles have no matching partners available on the board. The player with the highest accumulated Sugar Crystals wins.
The baker who achieves the highest overall score is officially crowned the Grandmaster Confectioner of Sugarlandia!
2.9 Rule Clarifications & Bakery Etiquette
- Touch Is Claimed: Once a player touches an unblocked tile, that tile must be chosen as their first selection for the turn.
- Two-Handed Stack Care: When removing tiles from upper layers, players must use care not to knock over or shift adjacent stacked tiles.
- Clear Display: All tiles claimed onto a player's rack must remain fully visible to all opponents throughout the game.
