Bilder Wörter: Game Description & Official Rulebook

Part I: Game Description

1.1 Overview and Lore

Welcome to Bilder Wörter (Picture Words), a delightfully creative, fast-paced educational tabletop and digital puzzle game that bridges visual art, spatial deduction, vocabulary building, and language synthesis. Set in the bustling studio of the Grand Lexicon Atelier, players take on the roles of Master Illustrators and Word Artisans competing to turn vibrant visual images into clever linguistic constructs.

In Bilder Wörter, players are challenged to interpret multi-layered pictorial clues—ranging from literal photos and symbolic icons to clever visual puns (rebus puzzles)—and combine them with letter tiles, prefix blocks, and sound connectors to form complete target words and phrases. Unlike static flashcard matching games, Bilder Wörter features a dynamic, shifting canvas board where image cards can be connected spatially to modify, expand, or completely alter the linguistic meaning of adjacent tiles.

Designed for 1 to 6 players, Bilder Wörter provides a rich blend of quick visual intuition, linguistic deduction, word building, and tactical player interaction. Whether played as a cooperative language-learning tool, a family board game night favorite, or a high-stakes competitive vocabulary race, Bilder Wörter delivers a deeply satisfying celebration of visual and verbal literacy.

1.2 Component Inventory

Every standard physical publication or digital interactive edition of Bilder Wörter includes high-density, beautifully illustrated components designed for clear visual parsing and long-lasting durability:

  • 1 Central Atelier Canvas Board: A modular grid canvas featuring 36 card-mounting bays, connector tracks, and perimeter scoring paths.
  • 150 Visual Picture Cards (Bilder-Karten): Double-sided cards featuring rich illustrations, icons, and photograph scenes divided into four distinct visual categories:
    • Literal Object Cards (Red Border): Concrete nouns (e.g., House, Sun, Tree, Apple).
    • Action & Verb Cards (Blue Border): Dynamic actions (e.g., Running, Flying, Cooking, Melting).
    • Abstract & Concept Cards (Yellow Border): Feelings, time elements, and states of being (e.g., Hot, Fast, Time, Love).
    • Rebus Sound Cards (Green Border): Visual phonetic puns (e.g., an Eye for "I", a Bee for "Be").
  • 120 Wooden Letter & Syllable Tiles (Wort-Bausteine): High-contrast wooden tiles carrying letters, common prefixes, suffixes, and compound word bridges.
  • 30 Modifier & Operator Tokens: Acrylic tokens depicting plus (+), minus (-), sounds-like ($\approx$), and swap icons used to modify picture meanings mathematically.
  • 1 Master Lexicon Almanac & Clue Index: A comprehensive guide detailing baseline target words, translations (German/English), variable difficulty variants, and hint ladders.
  • 1 Sand Timer (60 Seconds): Used for timed speed-rounds and competitive sprint modes.

1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design

Bilder Wörter embraces a clean, modern European studio design aesthetic. Visual Picture Cards feature crisp, high-contrast artwork rendered in soft watercolor and bold graphic vectors, ensuring every visual detail stands out immediately during rapid play. To guarantee complete accessibility for all players, every Picture Card includes a subtle icon-based category symbol in the top-left corner, and all Letter Tiles utilize a large, highly readable sans-serif typeface with distinct debossed border frames.

1.4 Core Objectives

The primary objective in Bilder Wörter is to achieve the highest total Lexicon Mastery Score by correctly deciphering visual picture combinations, placing corresponding letter tiles to build the target words, and completing multi-card word chains across the Atelier Canvas Board.

Points are awarded through:

  1. Correct Word Solves: Identifying and correctly spelling the target word depicted by a Picture Card sequence.
  2. Compound Creation (Wort-Kombination): Successfully chaining two or more Picture Cards together to form complex compound nouns (e.g., Sonnen [Sun] + Schirm [Umbrella] = Sonnenschirm).
  3. Speed Bonuses: Completing a visual word construction before the 60-second sand timer expires.
  4. Flawless Lexicon Bonus: Solving a complex rebus or abstract picture chain without requesting hints from the Lexicon Almanac.

Part II: Gameplay Instructions

2.1 Core Mechanics & Linguistic Laws

Mastering Bilder Wörter requires understanding how images interact with letter mechanics and spatial modifier tokens.

Law 1: The Image-to-Word Synthesis Rule

  • A picture card represents either its literal name, a core attribute, or its phonetic sound.
  • When multiple Picture Cards are placed in a contiguous horizontal or vertical line on the Canvas Board, players must synthesize their meanings from left to right (or top to bottom) to form a single continuous word or recognized compound phrase.

Law 2: The Modifier Equation Rule

  • Players may apply Modifier Tokens between Picture Cards to subtract or alter letters:
    • Minus Token (-): Removes specific letters from an image word (e.g., Image of "CAT" - "C" = "AT").
    • Plus Token (+): Adds specific Letter Tiles directly to an image word (e.g., Image of "SUN" + "DAY" = "SUNDAY").
    • Sounds-Like Token ($\approx$): Indicates that the connected image should be interpreted phonetically rather than literally (e.g., Image of a "KNIGHT" $\approx$ "NIGHT").

Law 3: The Compound Stack Rule

  • In languages rich with compound words (such as German or English), two literal object cards placed side by side must be joined into a valid compound word using correct spelling and bridge letters (e.g., -s-, -n-) where grammatically required.

Law 4: Letter Inventory Restrictions

  • When spelling out the synthesized target word, players must draw from their active private rack of Letter Tiles. If a player lacks a specific letter tile, they may trade two unused tiles back to the general supply bank to acquire the needed letter.

2.2 Game Setup

  1. Assemble the Atelier Canvas: Place the central Atelier Canvas Board in the middle of the playing table.
  2. Prepare the Card Decks: Separate the Picture Cards by border color (Red, Blue, Yellow, Green), shuffle each deck independently, and place them face-down near the board.
  3. Populate the Display Grid: Draw 3 cards from each of the 4 Picture Card decks (12 cards total) and place them face-up into the central grid bays of the Canvas Board.
  4. Distribute Letter Racks: Give each player a wooden Tile Rack. Each player draws 8 random Letter Tiles from the cloth supply bag.
  5. Set Up Modifier Supply: Place the Modifier Tokens in a accessible central tray beside the Canvas Board.
  6. Determine Starting Illustrator: The player who most recently drew a picture, wrote a story, or looked up a word in a dictionary takes the first turn. Play proceeds clockwise.

2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play

Succeeding in Bilder Wörter requires a balance of keen visual observation, vocabulary depth, and smart tile management. Master players rely on four primary tactical pillars:

Technique 1: Deconstructing Rebus Phonetics

When facing difficult Green (Rebus) or Yellow (Abstract) cards, break the visual image down into its basic phonetic components rather than focusing on its literal description. Look for homophones and hidden root sounds!

Technique 2: Capitalizing on Compound Chains

Look across the grid for adjacent Literal Object Cards (Red) that can be easily merged. Building compound words uses up more letter tiles from your hand and earns higher point multipliers than solving single-card literal words.

Technique 3: Tactical Use of Minus Tokens

If you hold an excess of specific consonants, use a Minus Token (-) on a long picture word to strip away unwanted letters, transforming a complex image into a short, easy-to-spell target word.

Technique 4: Tile Bank Management

Never let your Tile Rack fill up with obscure, hard-to-use letters. Continuously cycle unused letters by forming short 3-letter connector words whenever an opportunity presents itself on the board.

2.4 Structure of a Play Session

A standard turn in Bilder Wörter progresses through four structured, sequential phases:

  1. Phase 1: Inspection & Selection
    • The active player examines the face-up Picture Cards on the Canvas Board.
    • The player selects 1 to 3 adjacent cards (or places 1 new card from their hand onto an open grid space) to establish their target word sequence.
  2. Phase 2: Visual Synthesis & Declaration
    • The player announces their proposed word interpretation to all opponents (e.g., "I am combining the 'Rain' card and the 'Bow' card to form 'Rainbow'").
    • The sand timer is flipped! The player now has 60 seconds to spell out the entire declared word using Letter Tiles from their rack onto the board's tile tracks.
  3. Phase 3: Lexicon Audit & Verification
    • Opponents verify the spelling and visual validity of the solution.
    • If disputed, consult the Master Lexicon Almanac. If the word is valid, the solve is confirmed!
  4. Phase 4: Scoring & Board Replenishment
    • The player collects victory points based on word length and card difficulty.
    • Used Picture Cards are moved to the discard pile and replaced with fresh draws from the deck.
    • The player refills their Tile Rack back up to 8 tiles from the bag, and the turn passes to the next player.

2.5 Picture Card & Scoring Matrix

Card Category Visual Type Base Points (Single Card) Compound / Chain Multiplier
Literal Object (Red) Concrete items (House, Tree) 100 Points $1.5\times$ Base Points
Action & Verb (Blue) Dynamic movements (Run, Fly) 150 Points $2.0\times$ Base Points
Abstract Concept (Yellow) Emotions, states (Time, Hot) 250 Points $2.5\times$ Base Points
Rebus Sound (Green) Phonetic visual puns (Eye, Bee) 300 Points $3.0\times$ Base Points
Modifier Applied (- / +) Altered image sequence $+100$ Bonus Points Applied directly to solve score
Sand Timer Beat Solved in $<30$ seconds $+150$ Speed Bonus Added to turn total

2.6 Game Modes

2.6.1 Master Lexicon Mode (2 to 6 Players - Competitive Strategy)

The primary competitive game mode. Players take turns claiming cards, building complex compound chains, and managing their private tile racks to score the highest points across 10 complete rounds.

2.6.2 Atelier Sprint (1 to 4 Players - Real-Time Cooperative)

  • Setup: A shared canvas is populated with 16 Picture Cards. A 5-minute master timer is started.
  • Gameplay: All players work together simultaneously in real-time, placing letter tiles and modifier tokens to solve and clear as many Picture Cards from the board as possible before time runs out.
  • Victory: The team wins if they clear at least 12 of the 16 cards with 100% spelling accuracy!

2.6.3 Junior Builder (2 to 4 Players - Early Literacy Variant)

A simplified educational mode using only Red (Literal Object) cards and simple 3-to-4 letter words. Perfect for young children learning spelling, visual recognition, and vocabulary fundamentals without time pressure or complex modifier math.

2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix

At the conclusion of the final round or when the Picture Card draw decks are completely exhausted, players calculate their total score on the Master Lexicon Ledger:

  • Total Word Solve Points: Cumulative points accumulated from successfully solved picture sequences during play.
  • Unused Tile Penalty: Subtract 20 Points for every unplayed letter tile remaining on your private Tile Rack at the end of the game.
  • Master Artisan Award: $+500$ Points to the player who constructed the longest single compound word during the match.

2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions

A game of Bilder Wörter officially concludes upon reaching any of the following resolution triggers:

  1. Deck Exhaustion: Two or more Picture Card draw decks are completely empty, and no face-up cards remain on the Canvas Board.
  2. Target Score Reached: A player reaches or exceeds the pre-determined victory threshold (e.g., 2,500 Points in a standard match).
  3. Master Timer Expiration: In Atelier Sprint mode, the master clock hits 0:00.

The player with the highest overall Lexicon Mastery Score on the ledger is crowned the Master Artisan of Bilder Wörter!

2.9 Rule Clarifications & Studio Etiquette

  • Dictionary Standard: Prior to starting the game, players must agree upon an official reference dictionary (physical or digital) to settle all spelling and compound word validity disputes.
  • Proper Nouns & Names: Unless explicitly specified by a special scenario rule card, proper names, brand names, and geographical locations are not valid target words.
  • Tile Trading Penalty: Trading tiles during your turn takes the place of playing a card; a player who trades tiles cannot build a word on that same turn.
