4 Winds
4 Winds: Game Description & Official Rulebook
Part I: Game Description
1.1 Overview and Lore
Welcome to 4 Winds, a strategic, highly tactical tile-placement and hand-management game inspired by ancient maritime navigation, seasonal shifts, and elemental manipulation. Set on the uncharted expanse of the Aetherial Archipelago, players assume the roles of Legendary Navigators and Elemental Archons vying for control over sacred trading routes, floating temple ruins, and storm-swept coastal territories.
In 4 Winds, 1 to 4 players interact with a dynamic, expanding grid canvas that represents the high seas. Guided by the four elemental cardinal directions—Boreas (North / Frost), Zephyrus (West / Gales), Eurus (East / Tempests), and Notus (South / Solar Currents)—players place directional wind tiles, maneuver fleets, and construct coastal outposts. The core mechanic relies on vector control and spatial manipulation: whenever a Wind Tile is played onto the ocean grid, its directional air currents push adjacent ships, sea markers, and floating wreckage along specific vector pathways. Matching the current active wind alignment with your fleet’s orientation allows you to claim lucrative sea lanes, trigger devastating naval chain movements, and capture contested harbor shrines.
Combining spatial foresight, tactical positioning, dynamic variable board states, and press-your-luck nautical navigation, 4 Winds delivers an engaging, deeply strategic experience for both casual board gamers and master tacticians. Will you master the shifting currents to lead your fleet to legendary fortune, or will an unforeseen gale blow your ships off course and capsize your empire?
1.2 Component Inventory
Every standard physical or digital interactive edition of 4 Winds includes high-density, beautifully crafted components designed for smooth tactical play and maximum replayability:
- 1 Central Ocean Grid Board: A heavy-duty, dual-layer $6 \times 6$ modular tile grid board featuring recessed cell slots, compass borders, and wind rose alignment tracks.
- 100 Acrylic Wind Tiles: Weighted, double-sided tiles featuring directional vectors and color-coded elemental currents across four cardinal directions:
- 25 Boreas Tiles (North Wind / Ice Blue)
- 25 Notus Tiles (South Wind / Solar Gold)
- 25 Eurus Tiles (East Wind / Emerald Green)
- 25 Zephyrus Tiles (West Wind / Crimson Violet)
- 32 Sculpted Fleet Wooden Tokens: High-detail wooden ship miniatures divided into four player colors (Navy Blue, Seafoam Green, Coral Red, Obsidian Black).
- 16 Coastal Outpost Miniatures: Miniaturized wooden harbor forts used to claim grid edges and control trade zones.
- 1 Celestial Compass Dial: A rotating center-board track used to track seasonal shifts and the master wind orientation.
- 20 Storm & Kraken Tokens: Special obstacle markers used to block sea lanes or sink unprotected vessels.
- 4 Navigator Reference Slates: Personal player boards detailing vector interactions, scoring values, and special maneuver actions.
1.3 Visual Aesthetics and Design
4 Winds features a classic nautical, cartographic visual design inspired by 16th-century sea charts, illuminated compass roses, and mythical ocean maps. The central board is styled in deep sea-foam blues and parchment-gold borders, with intricate woodcut-style artwork representing sea monsters and celestial constellations. To ensure complete accessibility for color-blind and visually impaired players, every directional Wind Tile pairs distinct color gradients with bold vector arrow icons and edge notches indicating directional flow (e.g., North = Single Notch Up, South = Double Notch Down, East = Right Arrow, West = Left Arrow).
1.4 Core Objectives
The primary objective in 4 Winds is to accumulate the highest total Navigational Mastery Score (NMS) over a series of rounds by strategically placing Wind Tiles, navigating fleets into high-value trade sectors, controlling coastal outposts, and trapping rival vessels in hostile storms. Points are earned through:
- Fleet Navigation: Guiding your ships into trade harbors and floating relic zones.
- Trade Route Dominance: Aligning continuous wind vector pathways between opposite ends of the board.
- Outpost Control: Placing harbor forts along grid edges where matching wind currents terminate.
- Naval Superiority: Pushing opponent ships out of favorable waters or onto reef obstacles.
Part II: Gameplay Instructions
2.1 Core Mechanics & Vector Rules
Mastering 4 Winds requires a thorough understanding of cardinal directions, tile placement, and displacement physics.
Rule 1: The Cardinal Direction Rule
- Every Wind Tile depicts a primary directional arrow (North, South, East, or West).
- When a Wind Tile is placed on an open grid cell, it creates an active wind current pointing strictly in that cardinal direction.
- The Master Celestial Compass rotates once per round, modifying the base point value of specific wind directions (e.g., in Winter, North Wind tiles grant double points).
Rule 2: The Displacement (Push) Principle
- Placing a Wind Tile onto a cell adjacent to a ship token causes that ship to immediately slide 1 cell in the direction of the tile's arrow.
- If a ship is pushed into another ship, both ships slide together in a chain push line, provided the destination cell is open.
- Reef Collision: Pushing a ship into a Reef or Kraken obstacle causes that ship to become damaged, forcing it back to its starting harbor slate.
Rule 3: Vector Alignment & Current Chains
- When two or more Wind Tiles with identical arrows are placed in an unbroken straight line (e.g., three North Wind tiles in a column), they form a Current Chain.
- Any ship entering a Current Chain instantly slides across all connected tiles in a single turn without expending extra move actions!
2.2 Game Setup
- Set Up the Ocean Grid Board: Place the $6 \times 6$ central board in the middle of the play area. Place 4 neutral Reef Tokens onto the 4 designated center grid intersections.
- Initialize the Master Compass: Place the Celestial Compass Dial beside the board and set the starting seasonal indicator to Spring (Boreas/North active).
- Distribute Player Components:
- Provide each player with a Navigator Reference Slate, 8 Fleet Tokens, and 4 Coastal Outpost Miniatures of their chosen color.
- Each player places 2 starting ships at their designated home corner harbors (Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, or Southeast).
- Draft Starting Tile Hands:
- Shuffle all 100 Wind Tiles face-down into a draw bag.
- Each player draws an initial hand of 4 Wind Tiles. Keep your tiles secret from opponents.
- Determine the First Navigator: The player who most recently sailed on a boat, visited an ocean beach, or checked a weather forecast goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.
2.3 Fundamental Tactics & Step-by-Step Play
Succeeding in 4 Winds requires balancing offensive expansion with defensive positioning. Master players employ four primary strategic techniques:
Technique 1: Current Chain Engineering
Do not just move your ships one space at a time. Spend early turns laying down matching directional Wind Tiles to build long, unbroken Current Chains across the board. Once built, you can launch a ship from your home corner straight into an opponent's harbor in a single turn!
Technique 2: Defensive Gusting
Keep a defensive Wind Tile in your hand that points away from your home harbor. If an opponent attempts to push their fleet toward your high-value outposts, use your turn to place a counter-directional wind tile to push them off course!
Technique 3: Outpost Anchor Lock
Place your Coastal Outpost Miniatures on grid border spaces where you have constructed strong incoming wind currents. Outposts anchored by matching wind currents cannot be captured by rivals, securing stable victory points for the end game.
Technique 4: Seasonal Compass Timing
Track the Celestial Compass closely. If you know the season is about to shift to Autumn (Eurus/East active), accumulate East Wind tiles in your hand so you can flood the board with high-scoring plays as soon as the seasonal bonus activates.
2.4 Structure of a Play Session
A full game of 4 Winds consists of 4 Seasons (Rounds), with each season featuring structured operational phases during a player’s turn:
- Phase 1: Wind Analysis & Weather Inspection
- Inspect the board and your hand of Wind Tiles. Check the active season on the Celestial Compass to identify high-scoring vector directions.
- Phase 2: Action Phase (Perform 2 Actions)
- On your turn, you must select two of the following actions (you may repeat an action):
- Action A: Lay Wind Tile: Place 1 Wind Tile from your hand onto an empty grid cell, resolving all immediate push effects on adjacent ships.
- Action B: Sail Fleet: Move 1 of your ships 1 cell along an existing matching wind arrow direction on the board.
- Action C: Build Outpost: Spend 1 Outpost Miniature to claim an open edge cell connected to a ship you control.
- Action D: Rotate Compass: Spend a turn action to rotate the Celestial Compass 90 degrees clockwise (Limit once per season).
- On your turn, you must select two of the following actions (you may repeat an action):
- Phase 3: Resolution & Current Chain Check
- Resolve all multi-ship displacement pushes, current chain slides, and obstacle collisions.
- Log any immediate trade point bonuses earned by landing ships in neutral trade ports.
- Phase 4: Replenish & Turn Hand-Off
- Draw back up to 4 Wind Tiles from the supply bag.
- Pass the turn clockwise to the next player.

2.6 Game Modes
2.6.1 Archipelago Campaign (2 to 4 Players - Standard Competitive)
The primary tabletop experience. Players compete over 4 full seasons to secure harbors, build trade lanes, and outmaneuver rival fleets. The navigator with the highest cumulative point score at the end of Season 4 wins!
2.6.2 Tempest Survival (1 Player - Solo Challenge)
- Setup: The player controls 4 ships starting in the center of the board surrounded by hostile automated storm tiles.
- Gameplay: Draw and place random Wind Tiles to navigate all 4 ships to safety harbors along the outer board edges before the 20-tile storm deck runs out.
- Goal: Successfully evacuate all ships while achieving a minimum score of 1,200 points.
2.6.3 Fleet Armada Duel (2 Players - Head-to-Head)
- Setup: Each player controls a massive fleet of 6 ships starting on opposite board edges.
- Gameplay: Tactical, fast-paced battle focusing on capturing opponent outposts and trapping enemy flagships.
- Victory: The first player to eliminate 3 enemy ships or occupy the opponent's main home harbor wins instantly.
2.7 Completion & Final Scoring Matrix
At the end of the 4th Season (when the Celestial Compass completes a full 360-degree rotation), final scores are tallied on the Navigator Slates using the following formula:
- Trade Port & Route Points: Sum of all points scored from active trade ports and trade routes.
- Outpost Valuation: +200 Points for every controlled Coastal Outpost on the board perimeter.
- Fleet Survival Bonus: +100 Points for every undamaged ship remaining on the open sea.
- Seasonal Tile Bonus: Points for all remaining hand tiles that match the final active season.
2.8 Game End & Victory Conditions
A game of 4 Winds concludes under any of the following conditions:
- Season Completion: The Celestial Compass completes its 4th rotation (end of Season 4).
- Tile Exhaustion: The Wind Tile draw bag becomes completely empty and no player can draw tiles.
- Harbor Conquest: A player successfully places Coastal Outposts in all 4 home corner harbors.
The player with the highest total Navigational Mastery Score (NMS) is crowned the Master Archon of the 4 Winds!
Tie-Breakers
If two or more players tie for total points at the end of the game, resolve the tie using the following priority rules:
- The player who controls the most Coastal Outposts on the outer board perimeter.
- The player who engineered the longest unbroken Current Chain during the match.
- The player with the most undamaged Fleet Tokens remaining on the grid.
2.9 Rule Clarifications & Tactical Etiquette
- Fixed Wind Arrows: Once a Wind Tile is placed on the board grid, its directional orientation is permanently locked for the rest of the game unless affected by a special card ability.
- Board Edge Bounds: Ships cannot be pushed off the outer edge of the board grid. If a push force would drive a ship off the board, the ship remains in place on the perimeter space and absorbs the shock (no displacement occurs).
- Open Hand Transparency: Players must always keep their remaining count of Wind Tiles visible to all opponents, though tile faces remain secret until played.
